Pierre Phalèse (1510-1575) was a Flemish publisher and his First Book of Dances, an extensive collection of dances in four parts, was published in Leuven in 1571. They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the gaillarde (or galliard) was a popular dance and a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I of England. This is the 11th dance in a set of 20 gaillardes in the original publication. The title might be a reference to a French surname (Larocque) or it might refer to the small town on the island of Jersey (La Rocque) in the Channel Islands. From the Middle Ages, the its harbour was a refuge for fishing boats. This arrangement is scored for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments with optional percussion and keyboard parts. The flexible arrangement makes them playable by non-standard ensembles. The optional keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments.This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and two or three players are usually required. Other percussion instruments may be added as desired. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

La Fee Verte (2013, 12 minutes) for chamber orchestra and Galician gaitasI first became obsessed with bagpipes when my grandfather, Boston Police Lieutenant David Moran, passed away. I was 14 years old, and at his funeral police pipers played, just before the rifles were fired. I was overwhelmed by the power of the instrument, of course compounded by my own sadness and emotion. Years later, a good friend died and another friend wrote him a requiem performed by 12 bagpipes, and after being in denial about his death the power of the sound again made be burst in to tears. Then I was out a Tanglewood at a Silk Road retreat and Osvaldo Golijov had brought a friend, Cristina Pato, to demonstrate her instrument, the Galician Gaita. I was blown away, for the first time the power of the instrument hit me with pure joy, I had never heard bagpipe played like this and by a woman, it was just spectacular! I immediately found a bagpipe teacher in Boston, and started learning Highland pipes, and a few years later, in 2010, went to Galicia and began studying the Gaita. This piece is dedicated to two great gaita players, Cristina Pato and my teacher Anton DaVila. La Fée Verte was commissioned by The Silk Road Project.About the ComposerChristine Southworth (b. 1978) is a composer and video artist based in Lexington, Massachusetts, dedicated to creating music born from a cross-pollination of sonic ideas. Inspired by intersections of technology and art, nature and machines, and musics from cultures around the world, her music employs sounds from man and nature, from Van de Graaff Generators to honeybees, Balinese gamelan to seismic data from volcanoes. Sanctus5. Agnus dei6. Ite missa estGuillaume de Machaut composed the Messe de Nostre Dame, also known as the Mass of Our Lady, in the early 1360s. He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric found at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass. Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons:1. It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived.2. It is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor.3. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time.4. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are quite lengthy, and therefore Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, both ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen.Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for the sake of uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. The mass is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. This is from a collection of pieces I originally arranged for my Middle School Mariachi Band at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: “La Cucarachaâ€, “Cielito Lindoâ€, De Coloresâ€, and “Mexican Hat Danceâ€, all available here (soon).
