One Second to the Future (Guitar Orchestra) Composer: Brent Robitaille  • “One Second to the Future†is a two-movement piece for either a single or optional double guitar orchestra with four separate parts for electric guitar and classical guitar. Two optional steel string guitar and electric bass parts are available but may be substituted if these instruments are unavailable. The total score will be around 500 measures with a running time of approximately 12-15 minutes. The piece is quite approachable for intermediate-level guitarists, with the more challenging sections arranged for the 1st and 2nd parts of the electric and classical guitar. Three overhead mics from the stage will be used to spatialize the sound into a stereo or surround sound system.  • The first movement starts with a fixed audio shortwave recording from the Canadian time signal shortwave station CHU, gently fading in for approximately 20 seconds before the guitar orchestra begins with natural and artificial harmonics.  • The second fixed audio track gently enters around the 1:00-minute mark. This track was recorded using eight amplified and non-amplified guitars in altered tunings with eight separate microphones to integrate into stereo or surround sound. The guitar's open strings were left to vibrate sympathetically as the volume increased and struck on the headstock with various rubber and metal sticks, violin bows or paint brushes to get the strings vibrating. The resulting wave files were then imported into a sampling program and filtered into the overtone series with “C†as the fundamental, emphasising the first 14 partials. This recording will be used intermittently throughout the first movement, acting primarily as a background pad.   • At approximately 3:00 minutes into the first movement, the players are asked to use a glass or metal slide to tap out rhythms based on the international Morse code. Several other standard slide guitar techniques are also integrated into this section. See instructions in the score. The first movement ends with both fixed audio tracks fading away.  • The second movement integrates a more traditional guitar playing and composition approach. Its bulk is at a robust tempo of 160 bpm and uses several rhythmic and timbral techniques, including sul tasto, sul ponticello, harmonics, golpe, string snaps, and the further use of guitar slides.  • Midway through the second movement, a rallentando proceeds to a section indicated by the tempo mark “slow motion.†At this point, a third fixed audio recording of a single vibrating guitar string slowed down by 3000% will fade in. The orchestra is instructed to play with this recording in slow motion or approximately 30 bpm. See score for details. UPC: 600313134685.Love, thricewise was the winner of the 2009 Pacific Chorale Young Composers Competition. It was premiered in February 2010 under the baton of Robert Istad by the John Alexander Singers. The first movement, Liquor and lacquer, sets Witter Bynner's Opus 6 and depicts infatuation through flighty changes of meter and sudden shifts of mode. The second, entitled An amethyst remembrance and based on a poem by Emily Dickinson, is built around a false cadence on the words 'T will keep. It is regretful, slowly building to an anguished climax and wistfully fading away. Finally, Kinsfolk takes Sidney Lanier's A Song of Love as its text. It is both a lighthearted reflection on the paradoxical and complementary relationship between love and pain, and a pining for love. The first two stanzas of Kinsfolk pit the tenors and basses, who deliver the first stanza’s melody, against the sopranos and altos, who answer in the second stanza with the same melody in a key a tritone away from that of the first. The third stanza is a fugato on the same melody, culminating in a fervid fortissimo. Duration approx. 6:30.

This song is a song of hope and peace that effectively uses a very simple but beautiful melody. At the very end of this arrangement, the melodic motif repeats itself 3 times like an echo - while decrescendo-ing and fading away to a whisper. This is to remind us that sometimes, for a better perspective, we all need to step back and look at things from a distance.

Serenity is as the title suggests, is a peaceful and relaxing composition with a sense of openness and space.It is a fusion of two styles-namely the late romantic period and film music. It is based on a single idea heard in the first two bars (a bar or so of quaver movement). This gets developed throughout the piece even changing key for a few bars at one point for a twist of harmonic interest before reaching a climax in the middle. This piece is based on text that I wrote several years ago. As a lover of the horror genre I have always had a fascination with the romantic creature known in modern culture as the vampire. I imagined in my mind the interaction between a mortal and an immortal creature. How would the mortal describe a romantic encounter with this creature that exists in the shadows, untouched by time? I used descriptive text to communicate the visceral details of this experience and make the listener create in their mind how the experience would have felt if they had experienced it. The encounter is intense, and painful but once it ends the narrator feels empty and only has a mysterious melody to keep as a memory. I set the text for treble voices because I felt that the close harmonies I could accomplish with voices in the same register would lend itself well to the imagery. The piece is lush and smooth when the text demands it and sharp and angular when the text calls for that sound. Once the interaction is over, the voices break off into an aleatoric section in which each voice sings the phrase Songs only bones can hear fading away into nothingness just as the text suggests the vampire moves into the velvet void.

This is a fun piece that I think young musicians will enjoy. The percussion parts provide the train sounds. I envisioned this piece as sort of a story in which the train arrives at the station to pick up passengers and then makes stops along the way to pick up additional passengers, represented by the different sections of the orchestra. How is it like to be an only child in a small family? What if Mummy cooks amazing food, but dad is never present and granny memory is fading away?... Music has the ability to unleash new empathic experiences in any of us. My goal with this small suite was to recreate some classics through metaphors, analogy and a grain of parody. This programmatic suite has a pedagogical role since it allows the player to practice and develop technical skills required to play the canonical repertoire. Furthermore, it also invites players to be immersed into these family characters and to try to absorb and embody some of their emotional experiences which are required to best convey the meaning of the situations. As such, I expect these pieces to be suitable for the classroom, recitals or just for fun.
