Faithful Sunset's main theme is written in the key of A Major in slow, waltz style; the main theme is nicely contrasted by sections in the relative minor of F#. This piece is perfect for recital performances, and is a great addition to your piano trio repertoire. Approximately 2:50 minutes into the performance, the violin leads the way as the piece builds in intensity and then transitions into B Major. The complete score is 11 pages in length (approx. 5:30 duration); separate violin and cello scores are included. The difficulty level between the parts varies as the piece was written for a late intermediate pianist, level 3 violinist, and early intermediate cellist. Abigail Johnson is a piano teacher in Pennsylvania, and she enjoys creating piano ensembles for her piano students. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonÃn Dvořák and Josef Suk. The second movement is a gracious waltz that updates the requisite dance movement (which in Mozart's time would have been a stately minuet) to a more contemporary dance form. In any case, the waltz is almost deceptively complex. The harmonic shifts are numerous and often sudden and always deftly crafted. The texture is somewhat of a departure from the previous movement in that there is a discernible lightness of touch in the waltz. This arrangement for string quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

The younger brother of the Waltz King, Josef Strauss gave up an engineering job to join his brother in a composing and performing career. In a short time, he created a large body of high quality work, of which this waltz set is a prime example. His brother Johann believed him to be the best musician in the family. This arrangement is based on the authentic orchestral score published by Strauss Edition Wien. CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest.
