Playable using either B-flat or C trumpets, these two brilliant, short fanfares for two trumpets from 1921 by Manuel de Falla and Erik Satie exhibit two contrasting compositional approaches. The Falla Fanfare for a Festival is reminiscent of his dramatic opening trumpet and timpani fanfare to his Three-Cornered Hat and can be an exciting concert prelude featuring band or orchestra trumpeters and percussionists. Timpani parts are included for use with either C or B-flat trumpets. The subtly humorous Sonnerie by the eccentric, but influential French iconoclast, includes translation of Satie’s witty written commentary for the duet. Careful execution of the highly edited music will enliven the musical humor and performers will be amused with his score comments. Both fanfares have individual parts and a duo score. Each fanfare is in a different style, and the set was conceived to accompany a ceremonial occasion. Fanfare #1 heralds the Arrival of the monarch. The antiphonal Fanfare #2 precedes the performance of the main business of the day. Finally, Fanfare #3 signals the conclusion of the day's business and the monarch's Departure. Of course, if you don't happen to have a reigning monarch on hand, the fanfares will work just as well for any VIP or dignitary :) The fanfares are written for a team of 8 fanfare trumpets (Eb + 4 Bb + 2 Tenors + Bass), plus optional timpani and cymbals. Then the music becomes more distant, fanfares of the past played by woodwinds and muted brass. The transition brings us back to the present with the return to the full band’s salute to Saskatchewan’s Centennial.

These five short, elegant fanfares by former students of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov were composed for the 1890 concert celebrating his 20 years as professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. Originally scored for an orchestral brass section, the fanfares retain their brilliance as a brass quintet and parts can be doubled to intensify the musical impact. Arranged for a brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with alternate substitute parts for horn (B-flat trumpet, treble and bass clef baritone), trombone with a substitute treble clef baritone for trombone part and tuba. This is a very accessible work for student ensembles and less experienced players that will impress audiences and add festive excitement to concerts or ceremonies. Two fanfares are too short for a concert feature but work extremely well in a ceremony or celebratory setting. The last two short pieces aptly serve contrasting special purposes, as explained below.“Fort Pierre Fanfare” is about 40 seconds in duration, and was composed to open the feature concert at the South Dakota Bandmasters Association convention in 2022. Offutt Brass, from the US Air Force Heartland of America Band, was invited to perform that concert. Before the final piece of the concert, when gifts were exchanged between the sponsor and performers, beautiful presentation copies of the sheet music were presented to the sponsor. In performance, staging directions on the music can be extremely effective or cringy, depending on how they are conveyed. If there is any inkling that there may be a cringe factor, ignore them, and play the fanfare already on stage.“Enduring Freedom Fanfare” is nearly a minute of music. It was composed as a gift for the outgoing Commander of the US Air Force Heritage of America Band, Major Rafael Toro-Quiñones. His leadership was strong and inspiring, and he held a place of high esteem among many of the fine military musicians that he led. The Change of Command ceremony was toward the end of the Covid-19 shut-downs, so the work was not performed at the ceremony. Chief Remley, from the command’s satellite location in Nebraska, hand-delivered some finely printed presentation copies to Major Toro-Quiñones.“Noble Eagle Fanfare” is slightly over a minute in length, and, like “Enduring Freedom Fanfare,” was composed as a gift for another outgoing Commander of the US Air Force Heritage of America Band, Captain David Neil Regner.“Pilgrims’ Fanfare” was composed on what many Americans acknowledge as “Pioneer Day,” 24 July 2023. Not only honoring the thousands of pioneers that settled the western United States, but also the pilgrims that voyaged across the ocean to settle in the new continent. It is about 15 seconds in duration and is effective for any occasion in need of a magnificent fanfare.“Flightline Fanfare,” as its title implies, was composed for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the dedication of the newly renovated flightline at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Unfortunately, the ceremony itself was altered last-minute, and the 15-second fanfare was not used. However, like “Pilgrims’ Fanfare,” it is very handy for any event demanding a splash of pomp.“American Interlude” is a soft 75-second underscore for an MC’s moving speech or dedication. It was originally composed as a smooth segue between two moving patriotic pieces of different keys in a concert setting, but can be used in any similar appropriate situation.“Troop 184” is dedicated to my childhood BSA Scoutmaster, Gerry Nielson, who molded me in significant ways into the man I am decades later. It is functional music, akin to a fight song, and can be easily marched to. Words may be crafted as a customized hiking ditty, or it can be featured before or after ceremonies as prelude or processional music. The duration can also be customized, as there is a written optional repeat, lengthening the tune from 45 seconds to a minute and a half.

From the Swiss Guards in 18th-Century Paris) Der Arabi Nr. 1 (Trad) Arranged by Des McNutty The Basler Fasnacht, known locally in Basel Stadt (CH) as Die drey scheenschte Dääg (the three loveliest days), is a world-famous carnival where the Zeitgeist animates centuries of tradition. Local folks celebrate with a good-humoured satire of current events through costumes, masks, poetry and visual art on carnival floats and lanterns. Amongst many other activities, participants decorate the city and open ad-hoc bars to sustain everyone with drinks and characteristic foods, all of which led to the Basler Fasnacht being included on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Central to the whole experience is the music played on the streets, without electronic amplification, by two types of group: Gugge, with brass and percussion and Clique, with piccolos and side-drums made and played according to local custom. Some Fastnacht Fanfares contains historical melodies from the Cliques' repertoire arranged for Natural Trumpet Ensemble. The Signalkorps can have many players. The parts are in the low, principale register; ideal for newcomers and dilettantes. The ensemble parts require more skill and need only one player on each. s'Läggerli is used with kind permission from the Märtplatz-Clique Basel 1923. The similarity of the other melodies to trumpet calls may not be a total coincidence. Cavalry regiments, with their roots in armoured, mounted knights of even earlier times, were considered nobler; therefore they used royal trumpets and timpani for signalling and entertainment duties. So playing trumpet-style tunes on flutes adds a bit of class. Der Arabi Nr. 1 is now better known as The British Grenadiers from the early 1700s but can be traced as far back as the 1560s, when the Basler Fasncacht was already centuries old and the Schweizerpfeife (Swiss Flute), with drums, supplied the de rigueur regimental music for foot-soldiers all over Europe. Fasnacht is a glorious celebration laced with a melancholy reflected by the marching tempi of the Cliques: often slower than 90 BPM. A “standard†march is around 120 BPM. Vyyl Vergniege! (Enjoy!).
