Consisting of the free-form introduction and passacaglia, the piece is based on Martin Luther's hymn tune, and is written in a modern musical idiom that somewhat resembles the style of Max Reger's and Louis Vierne's works for organ, take for example Reger's Fantasia On A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and Vierne's Sixth Organ Symphony. The Fantasia is suitable for recital use, and employs a wide range of organ registrations that displays various tonal colors and sound intensities. The introduction starts with full of energy and concludes with softer registrations. The passacaglia starts off quietly and builds up sound intensity toward its conclusion, symbolizing victory of good over evil. The metronome marks and organ registrations on some pages are suggestions only, because each organ has different tonal qualities and the acoustics in buildings and halls may influence how organist perform the piece. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755118). Fantasia On Moravian Hymns was composed during 1998 as a result of a commission by the 20th Moravian Music festival. The work is in three sections; fast, slow, fast. The first section uses phrases from the hymns Sing Hallelujah, Praise the Lord and Jesus Makes My Heart Rejoice in a festive duple meter with a continuous triplet accompaniment. The phrases are used separately, in canon, and in counterpoint against each other. The second section uses the hymn When My Love To Christ Grows Weak which is turned into a passacaglia bass line. Eight variations over this bass line follow the initial statement. The last section uses the hymns All the World Give Praises Due and To Avert from Men God’s Wrath. All the World Give Praises Due is divided into phrases separated by a fanfare-like descant. The descant then becomes the basis of a short fugal section that leads directly into the hymn, To Avert from Men God’s Wrath. The harmony becomes more chromatic and is accompanied by a descant that grows out of the previous fugue. All the World Give Praises Due returns but is expanded as it leads to the climactic end. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844381). For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment. Â The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies. Â

After its initial presentation in the manuals, a fragment of accompanying counterpoint is turned into the subject for a lengthy fugue, while the motifs of the melody are continually hinted at. Eventually, the melody returns triumphantly and the ring bells ring refrain is heard for the first time, after which a fanfare leads to an opportunity for an improvised cadenza. The recording was made by Mark Swinton, organist of St Mary's, Warwick, who also gave the première performance on Advent Sunday, 2022.

Here, it has been arranged for double reed choir (2 oboes, English horn, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon). The arrangement contains minimal edits to the original score allowing for the performers to interpret the work as they choose.The opening solo is performed is the rich low register of the English horn followed by solo bassoon. Just as in the original work, the main theme is continuous, and the theme is passed around the ensemble to every part. The work concludes with a short and sweet duet between the contrabassoon and 1st oboe.This arrangement is an excellent way to close out a university double reed studio recital or Double Reed Day.
