This arrangement for brass quintet uses Renaissance techniques to provide a vibrant and festive setting. The Horn, Trombone and Tuba carry the chorale while the two trumpets accompany with florid imitative eighth-note motifs. The musical effect is bold and striking. This arrangement is suitable in a service of worship during the Easter season, it is also ideal repertoire for High School and College Brass Quintet ensembles. These five short, elegant fanfares by former students of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov were composed for the 1890 concert celebrating his 20 years as professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia. Originally scored for an orchestral brass section, the fanfares retain their brilliance as a brass quintet and parts can be doubled to intensify the musical impact. Arranged for a brass quintet of two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn in F with alternate substitute parts for horn (B-flat trumpet, treble and bass clef baritone), trombone with a substitute treble clef baritone for trombone part and tuba. This is a very accessible work for student ensembles and less experienced players that will impress audiences and add festive excitement to concerts or ceremonies. Published by William Ortiz (A0.1008980). Quinteto para Metales is a three-movement brass quintet. The first movement, Moderato fantasioso, is episodic and phantasmagoric in nature. Commences with a flamenco fanfare like motif in the first trumpet. Incisive rhythmic patterns, repetitive and fluctuating motives emerge and collide in paired and contrapuntal fashion. The second movement, Sandungeo, is in complete contrast to the first. This modal movement utilizes Caribbean and Hip-Hop dance motifs to discern a livier, sunny and festive milieu. Just like in a Jazz ensemble, there are sections in which each instrument is called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo. Rhythmic and melodic motifs from the first two movements are used to construct the final movement: Coral gótico. The recurring coral theme and the transformed motivic material recalls and conjures cyclic unity and closure for the whole work.

British composer Alexander Robert Reinagle wrote this melody about 1836 and named it after the church where he was organist, Oxford's St. Peter-in-the-East. First published as a musical setting for Psalm 118, it was adapted to John Newton’s How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds in 1861 and then to the hymn by John Oxenham (William A. Dunkerley), In Christ There Is No East or West, in the early 20th Century. While some sources specify that the St. Peter melody should be played without any festive fanfares, this brass quintet version does contain a few ceremonial flourishes. Most players will have little or no difficulty with this piece. The andante moderato tempo should be interpreted as somewhere in the vicinity of quarter note = 92. Most of the rhythm patterns involve quarter and eighth notes, with a few 16th-note passages scattered throughout. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its high A; tuba’s lowest is G below the staff. Otherwise, the music remains well within the normal playing range of all instruments. This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 13 seconds.
