The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible. The final song from book 5 shows quite an advance on the previously (relatively) simple writing. Here we have a full SATB ensemble plus a quite detailed continuo. Questi vaghi (These wandering little birds) also has a more complex structure, being, by itself a scena, split into sections by ritornelli which he calls Sinfonias. At this stage, they are by no means substantial enough to be considered preludes or interludes, but merely dances between the sections of the song. Because of this added complexity, I have had to arrange the piece for a 9-part brass choir. There is some overlap and crossover between the continuo and choral parts to accommodate the different groupings needed for each section. The ritornello sections need to be played more lightly and in a skipping style to add contrast between the 'vocal sections'.

Cruel Amarillis is the translation of the first line and the fp in each part's entry emphasises that cruelty, along with the increased use of dissonance.

Madrigal 15, Troppo ben puo, describes love as a tyrant whose cruelty cannot be escaped. This madrigal included a chordal continuo part, which has been incorporated into the resting parts for the bass/tenor line.

Italian.The choice of 16th century texts, by Bronzino and Battiferri, reflects the interests of the dedicatee of these sonnets - Craig Hugh Smyth, a fine art historian and former director of the Villa I Tatti, who was a specialist in Bronzino and Pontormo. Bronzino's sonnet is a lament on the death of Pontormo, his teacher; Laura Battiferri's poem is a direct response to that of Bronzino. As I was also asked to set sonnets by Petrarca, I chose two of his closely linked sonnets, numbers 229 and 230 in the Rime Sparse. I had written a work for I Tatti some five years earlier setting Petrarca (A qualunque animale, the first in my Fourth Book of Madrigals) and was familiar with the context. However, through correspondence with Kathryn Bosi, Music Librarian at I Tatti and, through her, Craig Smyth's family, I became increasingly aware of his unusual and quite special character. From his undergraduate days at Princeton and indeed throughout his life, although a great scholar and writer, he was at the same time an aficionado of jazz, loving above all Louis Armstrong, being photographed with Duke Ellington, taking his children to see Thelonious Monk, listening to Ben Webster and playing the tenor saxophone himself. Indeed, he had told Kathryn Bosi that he had been proud to walk in procession at the funerals of black musicians in New Orleans. In some ways his life was almost an obverse mirror image of parts of my own - I was a professional jazz musician but found myself teaching art history for a time. As Fiorella Superbi of I Tatti has said: Craig was a maestro di vita. I raise a glass in his memory and dedicate these sonnets to him. Gavin Bryars.

In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The fifth song, Stracciami Pur Il Core is a song about carnal love.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments.
