Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.WES151-S). 9 x 12 in inches.In accepting this commission, my thoughts were to create a work that incorporated the rich history of Chautauqua and its pure, innocent, ruralAmericana experience. Seeing its heritage was grounded in a nondenominational understanding of God, which incorporated both secular andspiritual experience, it seemed fitting to arrange a work that bound these two ideals into one work. The arrangement opens with a stately expressionof valor, dignity, and innocence lost - developing gently through a series of tonal and textural adaptations of the hymn tune until it finds a stately tuttiexpression for the ensemble. But the end is delayed by the arrival of a false cadence at rehearsal D, which embraces a 'river dance' with a variety ofpercussive features. The idea here is one of 'beauty from ashes' and 'joy coming in the new mornings dew.' The reeds are now used to express thebagpipe above the thrusts of the percussion. Soon, the hymn tune is heard again, supported by the rhythmic dance in reeds, brass, and percussion -now filled with the joy of community participation. Each counter-melodic line is somewhat of a statement now - and, must be heard in itsuniqueness. It is as if the birds have begun to sing again, each in their own language, of the wonderment surrounding the new day. Hope has onceagain sprung upon the community through music.Take your time through the reminiscent, Americana moments, and enjoy the dance thoroughly!

J'attends le vainqueur [What are you doing there, little girl, With those freshly cut flowers ? What are you doing there, young girl, With those dried flowers ? What are you doing there, pretty woman, With those faded flowers ? What are you doing there, old woman, With those dying flowers ? I'm waiting for the victorious one] In my mind there were initially several possible interpretations of the poem My original thoughts were that le vainqueur means the conquering Christ and that the woman is waiting all her life with flowers before a church - waiting in vain for her saviour another possibility is that the woman is waiting for the winner of her affections it could even be that le vainqueur refers to the invading German army but this would not explain the fact that she waits all her life but, finally, as Raphaèle Larazoni suggests, (and more plausibly in view of other poems by Prévert) the vainqueur is simply the winner in a war - there is never really a winner in a war, so the woman waits all her life in vain.

I was tasked to think about what songs my grandparents sang to me. Que Sera, Sera, although not a folksong, was the first that came to mind. My maternal grandmother had sung this to me in my younger days. Not long after, my grandmother announced that she intended to sell her house - the very house that I spent most of my growing-up years in. This was followed by many weeks of packing her belongings, uncovering forgotten treasures, and recalling the days of my childhood. Quite aptly, arranging this piece gave me an avenue to express my sentimental thoughts, and say goodbye to an old house filled with so many memories. I hope that both the performer and the listener can be transported back in time, even if just for a few minutes, to reminisce the happier and more carefree days of our lives. Furthermore, let us count our blessings in the present, as the future’s not ours to see. Que Sera, Sera. An original setting, for SSABar choir and piano by Philip Le Bas, of Quiet Peace by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), who worked as a Christian missionary among the poorest of the poor in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The poem is in the form of a prayer, and the music here has been been kept deliberately simple to perform, so that it canbe sung by a typical church choir. The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection. The poet feels an interior quiet peace while all around her there are storms and disquiet, because she knows that her Lord hears her voice. The setting is deliberately simple and undemanding, and it should be sung quietly, meditatively and without rushing. O Lord my heart is all a prayer, But it is silent unto thee; I am too tired to look for words, I rest upon thy sympathy To understand when I am dumb; And well I know thou hearest me. I know thou hearest me because A quiet peace comes down to me, And fills the places where before Weak thoughts were wandering wearily; And deep within me it is calm, Though waves are tossing outwardly. It was completed during the Christmas break of 2010, during the last year of my undergraduate composition studies at Georgia State University. It is a single movement piece, and the reason for this was that I needed, and I finally did, completed three small scale compositions in order to complete and secure my undergraduate composition recital. Moreover, Pathos belongs to a group of dark pieces in character; filled with melancholy and negative thoughts. It’s energetic sections express the persistency I have as a person to manage to overcome difficulties, however, on the other hand, it contains sections of collapsing sorrow and deep pain. A Walk in Nature is my first composition and follows the story of someone journeying through the woods. As the piece begins, the sun has just risen and awoken the life inside and surrounding the home. Each entrance represents the different lifeforms waking up on the beautiful day. Finally, the birds are chirping, the sky is filled with light, a breeze makes the woods feel alive, and the journey begins. As the “B†section begins the wanderer begins to look inward and think about themselves, life, and begins to feel nostalgic. This continues until suddenly, it begins to rain; and thus begins the C theme. This minor section represents the darkness the wanderer is feeling from their thoughts as well as the rain that has begun to soak their clothes. Finally, the clouds slowly begin to part and, just as the day started, the sun begins to bring light and warmth through the clouds. The journey is almost over, but not before the beauty of nature reveals itself one last time.
