Tribute to the Trail of Tears is an original SATB choir song commemorating my Choctaw heritage. When I wrote this song, I wanted to look at the Trail of Tears from the Choctaws' eyes. I did this by emphasizing the contrast between their anger with the shouting taken from a Choctaw war chant and hope with a Choctaw Sun Prayer (the sun is an important figure of hope in Choctaw spirituality), their English traditions forced upon them and their true Choctaw nature, and the betrayal of a government that was supposed to protect them. This song is designed to be slow and relaxed (~70bpm for the first part and ~85bpm for the piu mosso), with the bends representing relaxed glissandos in the voice. The last three chords are meant to be sensitive and should be taken very slowly. Keep in mind that this piece should not only be meaningful but convey the emotions to spread the Native awareness that is so direly needed in America.

Published by Nathan Grocholski (A0.1123447). The basis of this piece was centered around the complex emotions of cats in which we observe in our every day lives. With regards to this piece especially, there were three cats that I based this composition on, and their names are Storm, Zany and Tremor. Each miniature is a representation of a certain type of emotion that each of these cats is known for expressing. The first movement is for my favorite cat, Storm, and is titled, “Precious Storm.†Going back to my earliest memories of writing songs, I re-translated an old tune that I used to sing into a brass quintet miniature and dedicated to him, for he is the best cat. The second miniature is titled, “Mouse on a String,†and is supposed to portray the same energy that one would see from a cat in chase of a toy mouse being constantly propelled around the air from one end of a string, which is one of Storm’s favorite things to do. The third movement is called “Zany the Scaredy-Cat,†which is exactly the type of cat that Zany is. Always fearful and skittish, Zany sneaks around the house to avoid human contact at all costs. The fourth movement is titled “You Stuck, Zany?†This is named after a short video clip in which Zany finds herself stuck in the fireplace and struggling to get out. Once she frees herself, she runs away as fast as she can. The fifth movement is called “Passive-Aggressive Tremor†for the final cat, Tremor. Tremor likes to instigate conflicts with the other cats, but once the tension arises, he backs away, which can also be heard within the intense build ups and anti-climatic drops within the music as well. Finally, the sixth movement is called, “King Tremor,†in which is the boldest sounding of all the pieces, for when it does come to conflict, it is usually Tremor who comes out on top, outsmarting the other two cats.

Published by David Jex (A0.925770). 2016 Choral Contest EntryArt is a fire! is a bold statement on the importance of Art in our lives and society.Composed for SATB Chorus and Piano it is of moderate difficulty, with a length of 3 1/2 minutes.. The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.

Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1427). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.In the symphony popularly known as the Pastoral, Beethoven delineates his deep love for nature, for the peace of the countryside along with the drama of a thunderstorm. Little could he know how industrialism, urbanisation, exploitation and a general lack of respect would come to be a threat to Mother Earth. When we hear the nightingale, the cuckoo, and the rumbling of thunder in Beethoven's sixth symphony, the aim of the composer is to express his emotions with regard to these sounds of nature rather than imitate them (Mehr Empfindung als Malerei!). Yet the Pastoral Symphony became a model for 19th century programme music composers who wished to renew the symphonic format with storytelling and a freer artistic idiom. The vocal work Det forlorade paradiset (The lost paradise) makes reference to Beethoven's ontologically anchored love for Creation, but also to the fundamental tension between the idyllic and encroaching threats, the very factors that give the Pastoral Symphony its richness and inevitability. The lyrics have nothing to do with John Milton's famous epos Paradise Lost, they foretell an approaching apocalypse created by mankind in this age of pollution and climate change. The choral text consists of fragments of Schiller's Ode an die Freude (used by LvB in his 9th Symphony). A few quotes by Beethoven will be recited as well.The basic principal of this composition is to present soothing parallel - tonally based - streams of nature sounds and idyllic surroundings with the gathering of ominous clouds of approaching disaster: ferocious fires, torrents of rain and stormy winds (where the singers make use of clusters, chanting, growl, stamping their feet, etc). Doch mehr Empfindung als Malerei! (emotion rather than mere imitation). A nod or two to Mr. Beethoven by way of droning and using chromatic runs. Published by Jeremy Graham Hart (A0.1102258). 18/04/’21: A Reflection is written as a tentative expression of the tumultuous emotions experienced by the composer, upon watching so many landmarks of their home be threatened or destroyed by the fire which ravaged Table Mountain on the 18th and 19th of April 2021. The most impactful symbol of this tragedy is, for the composer, the heart-rending body of images showing the Jagger Reading Room ablaze. The score expresses the composer’s experiences in a collage, drawing from C. Debussy’s La Cathedral Engloutie and W. A. Mozart’s Requiem in evocation of the emotions surrounding the burning library, and enacts them in a three-part narrative. The opening is articulated as a collection of sporadic outbursts heard against a slower melody and a rising bell motif. This is an evocation of the shifting uncertainty of the early hours of the fire shortly after it had consumed the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant. This slowly becomes the evocation of horror and dismay that characterises the second section, as the fire takes hold of Mostert’s Mill, various parts of the University of Cape Town forcing students into a full evacuation of their residences, and eventually the Jagger Reading Room. The finality of the second section’s ending is followed by the muted resignation and mourning of the third and final section. The slowed melody from the first section returns, without the frenetic outbursts. All the listener is left with is the certainty of what has happened. The melody tries to rise to triumph, as the fire is held back from any further destruction, but ultimately falls back down and limps its way to an unsatisfactory and inconclusive closing statement.

Each of the six elementary solos in this series explores the different emotions various colors evoke and/or represent. This is an elementary piano solo/lyrics. Red is one of the 3 primary colors and is strong, energetic, and powerful. It is attention-getting and this is why sometimes it represents danger-as in fire trucks, stop signs, and train crossings, all mentioned in the lyrics. In some cultures, red is a lucky color. Form is intro A B A coda. Is in the key of C and 4/4 time signature. To be performed BOLDLY! Intro demands attention beginning with fortissimo clusters deep in the bass hands alternating, repeating up an octave, and then one more. A sections employ solid triads in root position beginning in LH with RH answering an octave higher. B sections arpeggiate these same chords with hands crossing over. Coda is exactly the mirror image of the intro, going down the piano with the clusters instead of up. This is a good dynamic contrast with 'Blue' and 'Green' in this series. Families of chords: utilizes 3 different families: 1. White/black/white; 2. White/white/white 3. Black/white/white. Twenty years ago, an evil terrorist act was committed. The twin Towers in New York were destroyed by planes. The Pentagon was attacked. A fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Feelings of shock, grief, horror, confusion, and anger followed in the wake of this senseless destruction. Fire fighters, police, and members of our Armed Services stepped up with great resolve to act as heroes in response to the attacks. Section A begins with the hum of airplanes followed by the for attacks. Section B expresses the various emotions people felt that day. After this section vents a feeling of national rage, it changes to a feeling of militaristic resolve as our troops go off to fight those responsible for the attacks. Section C borrows an American tune from the Civil War and WW1. Every heart is in the fight for the cause of truth and right, And the freedom of our own beloved land. Many people may know it as Jesus loves the little children. The parts not marked in red are meant to be sung in unison. In measure 45, the flutes and oboes play a decant over the melody. Three measures from the end, the band lands on a deceptive cadence followed by the rest of the measures going to the tonic.
