The First Christmas is an 84 measure, 4-5 octave, handbell choir medley of the Christmas carols: The First Nowell, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, and Angels from the Realms of Glory Parts of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming are scored for OPTIONAL 3 octaves of handchimes, but handbells can be substituted, if desired. Those two carol selections are reserved, reverent, soft and slow, in contrast to the first and last selections, which are much more exuberant in nature. This medley varies in tempo, volume levels, and style, throughout. Towards the end, there are tolls (swings) and a shake. It includes a brief introduction and an extended half-timed ending. Occasionally, there are descant lines and bass runs. I believe that this would be a level 2+ (2 plus) arrangement. The MP3 audio file provided is in a piano voice (patch) but suffices to demonstrate how this arrangement is generally meant to sound.

How a Rose E'er Blooming, which would fit well into either a contemplative moment of worship or an intimate moment of a concert. The gentle treatment lends itself to both the Advent and Christmas seasons.Beginning with an ebb and flow of both dynamics and tempo, this arrangement comes back to a flowing eighth note motif between verses and at its conclusion. The first verse features a baroque-style treatment as it plays with the third line of the melody before returning to the first style in its conclusion. The second verse is carried by a staccato accompaniment as the melody moves ahead in 3/4.The PDF file is formatted to be printed double-sided. Once printed and bound, odd numbered pages (including the cover page) should be on the right (where the primo player sits), and even numbered pages should be on the left (where the secondo player sits). Alternatively, if two pianos are being used, the file can be printed single-sided and the parts separated out; the primo player will have the odd numbered pages, and the secondo player will have the even numbered pages.

In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish.
