The piece is in concert F major establishing the bright swingy rhythm, this then flows into the second section which is more lyrical and legato and is in E flat major. A short bridge section follows keeping the motif's heard in the first section but exploring the lower registers and remains largely legato. The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind. Full score 16 pages-parts 4 pages. 4 mins 30 in length. The New York Times said: It's finally the first musical that speaks to today. A product of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, some of his songs, inspired by New Age theory, became anthems of the peace movements against the Vietnam War. After a first export to London, the French version was created in Paris at the Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin on May 30, 1969, its naked scenes causing a real scandal. This sonata ‘Pour deux Flutes transversieres sans Basse’ is the first of a set of six published by Boivin in Paris in 1728 as Blavet’s ‘Premier Oeuvre’. They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page.The sonata is written for two equal players and has 4 movements, Adagio, Allegro, Affetuoso & Allegro assai. Players of Intermediate ability and above will enjoy the interplay between the parts. The sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. This edition has been transcribed to the now established treble clef with G on the second line. Trills shown in the original as + are shown in this edition as tr. The breath marks in bar/measures 36, 39 & 41 in the final movement are Blavet’s. This is the first instance of his practice of marking the breaths which he developed in his opus 2 set of sonatas for flute and which has proved so useful to today’s performers of music of this period. Curiously Blavet used a flat (b) to cancel a sharp instead of a natural.

All edits have been indicated using dashed lines or parentheses ( ). No dynamics are marked in the original edition since bagpipes do not usually have means of volume control. The dynamics I have added (in parentheses) are suggestions only.The Suite would have been bought and played by flute, oboe and violin players as well as bagpipers. Boismortier wrote and published a substantial number of chamber works aimed at amateur players which were very popular and made him a very wealthy man.

This Trio Sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1712 for pairs of ‘flûtes traversieres, flûtes a bec, violons, hautbois, &c.’ with continuo by Mr. Hotteterre, Flûte de la Chambre du Roy. They were dedicated to the Duke of Orleans and published ‘avec privilege du Roy.’ The first Sonata has been edited and arranged for flute, oboe & clarinet in Bb. The four movements, Prelude, Fugue, Grave and Gigue, are in the Baroque style with the interest equally shared between the three parts. Dynamics in the 1712 edition are French - doux and fort. These have been standardised as p & f. The top parts were printed in the soprano clef - with g on the bottom line as was common in France at the time. Amusingly this led to some modern ill informed speculation about flutes of the period being expected to play low bs! In this edition all edits are shown using parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The Trio is suitable for players of intermediate standard and above and provides repertoire in the French Baroque style for an ensemble of players just a few years beyond the reach of Hotteterre.

Karol Kurpiński (1785-1857) was a romanticist and one of the most revered composers before Frédéric Chopin, and helped to lay the foundations of a national style and prepared the ground for Polish music of the Romantic period. He’s a largely forgotten figure, but in his day he was Warsaw’s leading opera composer. A single-movement concerto by Weber’s Polish contemporary Karol Kurpiński is skilfully written, with a melancholy slow section whose melody is attractive. Elsewhere, the piece isn’t without its moments of note-spinning and overlong harmonic sequences, but it’s a welcome discovery nevertheless. The premiere of the work took place on the eve of Kurpiński's departure from Paris in 1823. Up to date only the first movement of the Clarinet Concerto, in the sonata allegro form with three themes, has survived. Concerto will be a fine way to demonstrate the clarinetist's potential for brilliant display and heartfelt lyricism.

This charming piano solo was first performed by its dedicatee, Jacques Leguerney’s good friend and muse Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944), in the Salle Debussy-Pleyel. They met around 1925. Cahen was the first person outside of his family to encourage his musical aspirations. For years, they met every Saturday to read through and discuss his music. She not only helped him with piano and harmony, but also performed his early chamber works, recruiting from her entourage to help him find high level interpreters for his music. Other early Leguerney works that she premiered included the Trio pour violon, violoncello et piano; the Sonatine pour flûte et piano; and two vocal chamber works presented by the Société Musicale Indépendente (S. M. I.), Epitaphe guerrière and Clair de lune for voice, flute and piano. Their friendship lasted until Cahen was deported from Paris on July 31, 1944, only a few weeks prior to the Liberation of Paris. Working with the Center of the Union Générale des Israélites de France in Saint-Mandé (a Parisian suburb), Thérèse Cahen had dedicated herself to the care of children of deported French parents. She left Paris with these children in the Convoy 77, and was taken to the gas chamber of Auschwitz. The top four voices take turns with the melody while the tuba sets a foundation with chromatic passing tones that should be given a little emphasis as they occur. Away in a Manger The first two verses are sometimes attributed to Martin Luther as “Cradle Hymnâ€, but definitive proof of Luther's authorship is missing. The most common version is based on words found in a Philadelphia Sunday School book by James Murray in 1885 titled “Luther's Cradle Songâ€. Silent Night Franz Gruber was an Austrian church organist at St Nicholas parish in Obernhof, a small town north of Salzburg. The priest at the church, Joseph Mohr wrote the poem Stille Nacht in 1816 and Gruber composed the music for guitar accompaniment for a Christmas eve service in 1818 because something, possibly a flood, had damaged the organ. So, rather than a keyboard composition, this was originally composed for guitar and voice. The composition was preserved by the man who fixed the organ and shared it with other churches as he traveled. Luckily a copy survived so that Mohr and Gruber could both be acknowledged for their creation.
