Bells set the tone with a simple three-note melody as twilight falls and the first stars appear. Percussion effects represent crickets and cicadas chirping in the background. The texture becomes more chorale-like as related but distinct themes reveal themselves, representing rising constellations. As the star themes gently roll by, the harmony grows warmer and the melody becomes more grandiose in preparation for the final star-rise: the arrival of the morning sun. The work is a great exercise in part layering. -The Instrumentalist.

Published by Travis Hayman (A0.951690). Victory March is the fight song for the University of Notre Dame. The Rev. Michael J. Shea, a 1905 Notre Dame graduate and organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, wrote the music, and his brother, John F. Shea, who earned degrees from Notre Dame in 1906 and 1908, wrote the original lyrics. At the behest of his former music teacher, Professor William C. Hammond of Mount Holyoke College, Rev. Shea would first perform the song publicly on the organ of the Second Congregational Church of Holyoke, Massachusetts, where Hammond was music director, soon after completing the composition with his brother in the winter of 1908. The song would first be performed on Notre Dame's campus on Easter Sunday, 1909, in the rotunda of the Golden Dome.

I have lived near mountains, near oceans, and visited some of the most beautiful places in the world, but none of those places have ever felt as much like home as Nebraska. Nebraska, My Heartland incorporates the poetry of both Willa Cather, the famous Nebraskan poet and writer who helped the rest of America gain an appreciation for the pioneer life, and Veronica Torraca-Bragdon, a contemporary poet and friend whose heart will always belong to Nebraska. Cather’s poem, Prairie Spring was chosen because it vividly portrays the struggles of the pioneers who originally settled here, yet juxtaposes this struggle with youthful determination, and the optimism and enthusiasm brought about by hope. Veronica’s poem, titled Nebraska, is the centerpiece for the fanfare and celebration of a state that abounds with success in all of the ways that make Nebraska a great place to live. The music begins as the sun is about to rise and burst forth with the promise of a new day. It speaks of Nebraska’s natural beauty and landscapes while the sweet song of the Western Meadowlark, our state bird, drifts on the wind. Next, the changing seasons and thriving spirit of Nebraska’s people are portrayed with an energetic, youthful melody leading into a celebratory sesquicentennial fanfare. But as the seasons change, the listener is reminded that to thrive is also to persevere, and soon a storm begins to loom. First the rolling thunder, then the rain, and finally the full devastation of nature’s fury are realized by the combined forces of both ensembles. Yet, as hope springs eternal, we are reminded again of the strength of the pioneer and the roots that keep us anchored against the storm. Lent/Easter Musical This 30-minute musical reflects on Jesus's ministry and life on earth, and looks at the monumental effect his name has had on history. Told through six choral anthems with narration this work traces Jesus' life from his first preaching to the final momentous events of his passion. The music is mostly original and covers a range of styles. Accompaniment can be provided by just piano, CD or ED Hogan's orchestration. The half-hour length makes it ideal for including in a worship service anytime during Lent, or Holy Week, and it would be particularly poignant on Palm Sunday. It was written in 1850 by James Lord Pierpont at Simpson Tavern in Medford, Massachusetts. It was published under the title The One Horse Open Sleigh in September 1857. It has been claimed that it was originally written to be sung by a Sunday school choir for Thanksgiving, or as a drinking song. Although it has no original connection to Christmas, it became associated with winter and Christmas music in the 1860s and 1870s, and it was featured in a variety of parlor song and college anthologies in the 1880s. This arrangement for trombone quintet, with optional rhythm section, has an up-tempo beat. A solo section with chords and notated solos are included in each of the trombone parts to encourage solos. The first part requires a player with a confident c2, but all the other parts are accessible to good high school players. For variety, an optional rubato intro is suggested, which can be used in place of the up-tempo start. Originally published in 1935, this song was sung in the movie I by Frances Langford. She used this song to great affect while on tour with Bob Hope to entertain the troops in WW II. Many artists have had hits with this song, among them Louis Armstrong, Barbara Streisand, and Rod Stewart. Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields collaborated on over 30 songs, including On The Sunny Side Of The Street and I Can't Give You Anything But Love. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. Dr. Coil is the leader of the Bones of Cincinnatus trombone ensemble in Cincinnati, OH.
