Published by Jailton de Oliveira (A0.1456025). FLOATING LANDSCAPES, for Solo FlutePremiere: 13 July 2020 at Kraków Manggha Japanese Museum, Kraków, Poland. Natalia Jarząbek, Flute. The piece was composed as an étude to practice the technique of circular breathing. It has a single movement divided into five long phrases. The title is a metaphor for the form of the piece and also for the way the sounds are normally produced on the flute, where landscapes are represented by the musical phrases that contain sounds that “float” in the air in a flow that is produced and controlled by the performer. However “floating” also has connotations with something that circulates, e.g. an idea, providing an analogy to circular breathing. There are no bar lines in the piece. The rhythmic combinations have a freer, asymmetrical flow as they follow the internal structure of each phrase. The piece explores various nuances of dynamics (from ppp to f) in a slow rubato tempo, with a predominance of softer sounds. The piece aims at increasing the performer’s awareness of applying circular breathing over large intervals, and at developing the phrase building logic and its application.

Has good left-hand crossover and is a wonderful song for learning damper pedaling because it doesn’t change/pick-up often. No dynamics are given because each student has their own sense and style to express and I always encourage that. It’s learning to be creative on your own.

This composition will work very well for meditative music during liturgy and/or concert setting. I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years. ON THE LAKE There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. You may sing of your silvery seas by night When the moon looks down with a dreamy light; And the stars shine out in the skies above Like the warm sweet gaze of the eyes of love; But the glow on the lake to-day Is a glory that never will fade away. The beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The trees bend down in the sun's warm glow Till their branches meet in the waves below, And the clouds in the far-off skies Are mirrored anew where the sunlight lies. I love to float where the shadows lie 'Neath the matchless glow of the summer sky; And I love to dream that these waves of light Will never fade in the gloomy night: But I know that the things I love Are as far from my reach as the clouds above. We hear the serenity of sure comfort at the beginning, and then a melody appears--it emanates peacefulness, but also challenge. Major seventh and minor seventh chords are used back-to-back to portray the juxtaposition of light and darkness. When the minor chords take over and the melody begins to fall, a contemplative, tearful section begins, only to be interrupted by a confident rhythm. The 11/8 time signature conveys unsteadiness, but as it continues and grows, it becomes steady and powerful. Finally, the main theme returns in exuberance--the true form of a resilient spirit. As the music comes to a close, the final chord is a major seventh, not minor--good has triumphed over evil--and the notes float up heavenward to the final resting place--it is finished; having persevered, the soul has earned its peaceful rest.

Ukiyo-e (literally pictures of the floating world) is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries, featuring motifs of landscapes, tales from history, the theatre, and pleasure quarters. It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan. Usually the word ukiyo is literally translated as floating world, referring to a conception of an evanescent world, impermanent, fleeting beauty and a realm of entertainments (kabuki, courtesans, geisha) divorced from the responsibilities of the mundane, everyday world; pictures of the floating world, i.e. ukiyo-e, are considered a genre unto themselves. The novelist Asai Ryoi, in his Ukiyo monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, c. 1661), provides some insight into the concept of the floating world: ... Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating; ... refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we call the floating world... The degree of virtuosity is relatively low, but nevertheless not suitable for absolute beginners. Technically, the main characteristic of this piece is the polyrhythm 2 against 3: the melody subdivides the quarter in 2, and the accompaniment plays triplets. In this sense, an answer to Carl Czerny's polyrhythmic studie in E major. Please use abundant pedal when playing this piece. The idea is to generate a cloud of sound, not a machinal pattern. The sound character of this piece should be closer to Debussy than to Scarlatti. The initial indication scorrevole (fleeting) should orientate the character and the sound quality, the touch. Fermatas and caesuras should add time to the bar, like breathing in. In bar 8 (end) the silence is only in he left hand: the note of the right hand shouldn't be interrupted. This is actually clear if one read the rhythms carefully, but my experience tells me that it is prudent to underline this particular point. In bar 16 (and similar places), left hand: it is the central melody what should be in foreground, not the bass. Imagine that the melody is played by a cello or viola, and the bass by a double bass (or better: a bassoon). Try to achieve a different timbre and to separate therefore both layers. The title refers to this poem: Sum venti ingenium breve Flos sum, scilicet, aeris …… Sum blandum, petulans, vagum, Pulchrum, purpureum, et decens, Comptum, floridulum, et recens.
