The musical imagery expressed in this tone poem is largely inspired by the Acadian forest, Fundy National Park and other geographical features of Atlantic Canada. This tone poem is split into two movements: Sunrise and Sunset. “Horizons aims to reveal what a sunrise and a sunset on the horizon would sound like in Atlantic Canada. In essence “Horizons†aims to create that picture in the listener mind through music. Horizons is a tone poem that seeks to encapsulate the breathtaking nature found in Atlantic Canada. Drawing its inspiration from the lush Acadian forest,  majestic Fundy National Park, and the diverse geographical landscapes that define Atlantic Canada, this piece vividly translates the essence of these natural wonders into sound. The composition is divided into two movements, Sunrise and Sunset, each crafted to convey the unique ambiance and colors of the Atlantic horizon at these times of the day.In Horizons, orchestral textures are pivotal in painting the auditory landscape. The intricate layering of instrumental timbres and dynamics is akin to the interplay of light and shadow across the landscape. The delicate whispers of the woodwinds evoke the gentle rustle of leaves in the Acadian forest at dawn, while the bold, resonant brass mirrors the dramatic hues that streak the sky at dusk. Strings weave throughout, like the constant ebb and flow of the tides at Fundy Bay. Through Horizons, listeners are invited to embark on an auditory journey that mirrors the experience of witnessing a sunrise and sunset on the Atlantic horizon. This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for SATB a cappella and ideal for community or professional choirs. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981). He was an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. The Forest became his great passion and inspiration; much of his poetry reflects that upbringing and often relates to nature. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘The Birth’ is one. What I like about this poem is its simplicity and clarity – and its narrative development through the verses. It starts with the poet waking in the pre-dawn. He then realizes that it is Christmas Day and in the stillness of that time his mind turns to the birth of Jesus, as traditionally told; tenors and basses start this verse. Then he steps out of time and space and looks through his bedroom window to contemplate the mystery of incarnation; sopranos and altos begin this third verse. And he finishes at the stable, offering devotion to the newborn Lord. This song is also available in a version for voice and piano. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called Singing in the Streets; that one is set for baritone and piano. Ian Calvert.

Daniel Carr #30875. Published by Daniel Carr (A0.918711). The Three Nocturnes are highly impressionistic in nature, they depict three progressing times of night: dusk, midnight and dawn. The first movement contains a harp-like piano accompaniment over which the flute sings – generally light and free. Near the end, as midnight approaches, the music grows darker in character. The second movement has a concentrated, quiet intensity -- more whisper than scream. It is primitive and trance-like. The flute plays without vibrato – sounding almost like an ancient wooden flute. The third and final movement depicts dawn as the sun bursts upon the horizon, shining on the flowers and trees that had been hidden by darkness of night. It is a joyful and dancing movement, with a capricious middle section suggesting children chasing fireflies through a dense forest which the sun has not yet penetrated. Both the first and third Nocturnes make extensive use of the highest register of the flute.

Liz is the name of a lonely girl who sells bread at a bakery and socializes with the forest animals. After a big thunderstorm, she finds an unnamed blue-haired girl lying outside. She quickly takes her into her home and, the two become close friends. After a while, Liz started noticing the girl sneaking out at night and coming back before dawn. Liz noticed how the girl would look at the birds freely flying in the sky when they fed the animals. Liz becomes conflicted with her emotions but eventually decides to release her from the cage that is her home. Liz confronts the girl and tells her that she needs to be free and spread her wings. Although distraught by Liz's decision, the girl comes to respect it. Published by Ian Calvert (A0.1298966). This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for voice and piano. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981). He was an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘The Birth’ is one. What I like about this poem is its simplicity and clarity – and its narrative development through the verses. It starts with the poet waking in the pre-dawn. He then realizes that it is Christmas Day and in the stillness of that time his mind turns to the birth of Jesus, as traditionally told. Then he steps out of time and space and looks through his bedroom window to contemplate the mystery of incarnation. And he finishes at the stable, offering devotion to the newborn Lord. This song is also available in a version for SATB a cappella. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called Singing in the Streets; that one is set for baritone and piano. Ian Calvert.
