Watercolors of Earth and Sky is a work that celebrates the beauty and opportunity of nature through four musical movements. This work is for violin and harp (or piano). The violin part incorporates special techniques that help shape the sound and overall texture of the work. Each of the four movements presents an aspect of the composer’s experience in parks, plains, and woodlands. The music is also colored by the composer’s work as a performer of both classical and jazz music. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is a series of four paintings by Hoover with the same titles that are visual interpretations of the music. Images of these paintings that can be projected in performance are available directly from Hoover. This work is appropriate for performance for a broad audience.Jeffrey Hoover's works - ranging from music for soloist to symphony orchestra - have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the Russolo Competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications, fellowships, and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement in composition. Winner of the 2019 SMP Press Contemporary Composition award, Wu Xing - Sonata for Five Elements (5 movements, 15 min. 30 sec) was composed by Jeffrey Hoover for Yusheng Li, who initiated the first professional university saxophone degree in China. A work for alto saxophone and piano, Wu Xing reflects a fusion of American and Chinese musical aesthetics and compositional techniques. Each movement represents an element in the traditional Wu Xing generative cycle. Musical elements of one movement carry into the next, in the same way these traditional Chinese elements evolve into the next: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The fourth movement, Metal, is for unaccompanied saxophone, and includes extended techniques including microtones, multiphonics, and altered tone colors. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, Hoover has also created a series of paintings that visually interpret the music: Dancing in the Trees, The Ancient Lance, The Dragon's Creation, Temple Bells and Swords, and Life of the Earth. In the way the music is a fusion of American and Chines techniques, the paintings incorporate the Wu Xing philosophy approach. It is in many respects a symphonic work for flute trio, with the characteristics and order of the four movements resembling the structure of a classical symphony. As a child during the Space Race, I was immensely interested in both terrestrial- and extraterrestrial-exploration, and as I composed this music a half-century later it made the most sense to set the musical ideas in this manner. In the first movement, Black Hole, two contrasting themes are presented and immediately developed: a theme of polyphonic gestures, with a contrasting second theme of chordal-textured music. The characteristic and somewhat liquid sound of the flute trio in the second theme is especially evident. The static and evolving blocks of music represent the gravitational collection of matter by a black hole. The second movement, A Crescent Moon, 1969, celebrates astronaut Neil Armstrong's moonwalk in July 1969. This slow, lyrical movement possesses a nocturnal quality while features the alto flute as a solo instrument. The third movement, SETI Radio (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), is a slow through-composed scherzo. With piccolo, a high tessitura of the flute trio range is heard. The fourth movement is a dynamic Rondo Variations form.
