The trumpet parts may be played on Flugelhorns if the players wish. It is important for players to listen to some Bill Withers and note his singing style and how he leans on certain notes. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Ballet The Nutcracker debuted in 1892. One of the best-knownscenes from the work is The Dance of Sugar Plum Fairy for its celeste solo. This version forbrass quintet respects the source material but also adds a little extra whimsicalness to thefinal iteration of the tune; at bar 37 the melody is frequently passed from instrument toinstrument and the parts marked with "play out" are bits of the tune. -full duration 2:00

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote Capriccio Espagnol in 1887 as a showpiece for orchestra that featured several Spanish folk melodies. Its second movement, Variazioni, is a set of variations. What is so fascinating about this theme and variations is that neither the melody nor harmony drastically change; it is the orchestration that carries this movement. Honoring that, this arrangement for brass quintet gives each player a chance to play the theme. First, trumpet one, then trombone, then tuba, then 2nd trumpet, and finally trumpet one again. As always, players should research the orchestral version in order to grasp the tempo changes and style. - Duration 4:30

This work holds the distinction of being the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer. The first movement of five, Kyrie, is based on the plainchant Vatican Kyrie IV. In this arrangement for horn choir, I have taken liberties with several details not included in the original sheet music like dynamics, slurs, fermatas, written out repeats, and some varying use of timbre. All of these are included to create a more stylistically accurate performance, but it should be kept in mind that studying recordings is (as always) crucial. The version by Ensemble Organum (can be found on Youtube.com) would be an excellent place to start. This arrangement for 7 horns and tuba (or 8 horns) uses straight mutes, stop mutes, and a harmon mutes to create colorful textures. It is important that hornists play out when using mutes to balance with unmuted horns. Some other notes about this arrangement:-Horn 1 calls for a harmon mute. A bass trombone harmon mute is reccomended but a stop mute can be used in its place.-An optional 8th horn part is provided. It should be played if no tuba is present.-Duration 9:00

One of the best-known scenes from the work is Pas de Deux which comes near the end of the ballet. This version for brass quintet places muted trumpets, horn, and trombone in the role of the plucked strings and harps, while the tuba plays the melody followed by an unmuted trombone. Players should experiment with both straight mutes and cup mutes.
