This is My Father’s World♫ piano solo arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple♫ lyrics by Malthie Babcock with a traditional English melody adapted by Franklin Sheppard♫ Malthie Davenport Babcock, a pastor in upstate New York, was an athletic man who loved to walk near Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. He often told his wife that he was “going out to see the Father’s world.†This phrase prompted the title for one of his original poems. His wife published his poems after his death in 1901 (age 42.) ♫ In 1915 Franklin Shepherd, his friend, adapted Babcock’s poem and an English folk tune to create the hymn. Shepherd named the melody TERRA BEATA (Blessed Earth). ♫ The original folk tune appears in the opening notes of the Shire Theme by Howard Shore in the Lord of the Rings Film Series.♫ The last stanza used in this video is seldom found in hymnbooks. This is the nineteenth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view. (2003) 2) Pluto … The Lord of the Underworld (2005) This year, 2009, he asked me if I would be interested in writing a work for narrator and chamber orchestra like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great! The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design. I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable. In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores. In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog. In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.

Each song in this collection is notated for Handbells on one part and Boomwhackers® on a second part. For each song, there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note and chord reference chart is also provided for each song.This set of scores uses colored noteheads corresponding to the Boomwhackers® color scheme. If you have a set of bells or tubes with a different color scheme, Chroma-Notes Stick Ons can be purchased and applied so the instruments match the Boomwhackers® color scheme. This set of scores is also available (separate purchase) in black and white which will print clearer if you do not have access to a color printer.Several of these arrangements include two verses with a first easy verse followed by an intermediate second verse. For the songs with two verses, an optional ending is provided for the first verse or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. Lyrics and chord names are provided as well to aid in the learning and teaching of these songs. The number of ringers and whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes. For beginners, it is best to assign one note to each person.
