Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child is traced back to the era of slavery. It's an expression of pain and despair as the lyrics describe the hopelessness of a child torn from its parents. Steal Away is a song with a coded message, not only about having faith in God, but messages about slaves running away to seek their freedom. Sung softly in the dark of night, it was a signal that the coast was clear and now was the time to escape their bondage. They sang hopefully: Steal away, steal away, Steal away to Jesus! Steal away, steal away home, I ain't got long to stay here. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. Recognized as one of Oscar Peterson’s most significant compositions, Hymn to Freedom was written in 1962 and was swiftly embraced by people over the world as the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The piece was Peterson’s first major work and was written with encouragement from his producer and dear friend Norman Granz. During those initial recording sessions, Granz urged Peterson to create a tune with a “definitive early-blues feelâ€. For inspiration, Peterson drew upon various church renderings of Negro spirituals recalled from his childhood in Montreal. He aimed to maintain the unadorned, yet poignant quality of these early Baptist hymns while composing the beginning chorus of Hymn to Freedom. Upon its completion, Peterson and Granz decided that lyrics would complement the music and contacted Malcolm Dodds, composer, arranger and choir director of The Malcolm Dodds Singers, a backup group for many popular artists of the day. Dodds turned to his collaborator Harriette Hamilton, who had been writing lyrics for the choir group’s original compositions for several years. According to Hamilton, “all the lyrics had to do was express in very simple language the hope for unity, peace, and dignity for mankind. It was easy to write.†With Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, the trio recorded the piece on Night Train (Verve 1962), which became one of their most commercially successful albums. Critical acclaim moved Peterson to record Hymn to Freedom on several albums that followed. This arrangement is playable by SATB Saxophone Quartet with optional Bass Saxophone, String Bass and Drums. For performances by SATB Saxophone Quartet without rhythm, the part marked Baritone Saxophone 2 (substitute Bass Saxophone) should be used. Some improvising is allowed for in the soprano, alto and tenor parts. Optional written solos are provided. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. Alan Bullard's Canticle of Freedom (A Song for Peace), written in 1999 and first performed in 2000, is a prayer for a new millennium of freedom and peace, and each of the four movements takes as its starting point one of the verses from the nineteenth-century Christmas hymn 'It came upon the midnight clear'. It is scored for mixed choir, children's or youth choir, soprano and baritone soloists and a moderate size orchestra. The first movement tells of a solemn, still, and peaceful earth, and the second of a jubilant heaven. The third movement speaks of 'two thousand years of wrong' - the wars and persecution that have disfigured the last two millennia - and the last movement leads us from death to life, with a positive and joyful hope for the future: in the words of the hymn: 'When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling'. The text has been selected from a variety of poets and sources, ranging from mediaeval times to the present day.
