Published by Daniel Cueto (A0.876582). To write Tiento para un pensador, I found inspiration in an experience that I had many years ago, when I was a student in Dusseldorf, Germany. I was spending time one night with my friend Rafael Aguirre, a virtuoso classical guitarist, as he was casually playing through some of his repertoire. He asked me if I thought that it was possible to play a Baroque fugue - one of the most complex of musical genres - on the guitar. Before I had time to think about the question, he started playing his own arrangement of a fugue by J.S. Bach, talking me through it as the fugue theme appeared in different registers and the counterpoint got more and more intricate.The effectiveness and beauty of the contrapuntal sounds I experienced that night stayed with me. So in 2020, when I was invited to attend the Twisted Spruce Symposium and had a chance to compose my first piece for the guitar, I quickly decided that I would take up the challenge of writing my own fugue for the instrument. Looking to find a more specific context for the new work, I discovered the early Spanish genre of the tiento, essentially an early Hispanic form of the fugue. I came up with a melody which, I sensed, featured elements of that early style combined with a touch of Andean melancholy. As I composed, I strived to follow this basic affect throughout, letting the lines evolve organically as the piece seemed to engage in a long, continued search for its cultural and temporal identity.Para un pensador means for a thinker in Spanish. It is my homage to the intellectual guitarist, to the reflective and discerning performer of intricate contrapuntal music.I would like to extend special thanks to Nathan Fischer for producing this valuable edition of Tiento para un pensador.

Described as a « tour de force« during the operaâ??s initial run of performances â??Henry Faustâ? by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs is a three-act, one character opera based on Goëtheâ??s play as translated by Anna Swanwich (1859) with a libretto by the composer. It was premièred at the Circle Theatre in Chicago on April 11, 1993 with the Composer as Faust and Kevin Hinton, pianistâ??Henry Faustâ? started out as a thought about the â??essenceâ? of opera. Isaacs thought that one singer, one piano, and a black box theater were all that was really needed to achieve â??opera-nessâ?. Goetheâ??s play, â??Faust,â? immediately came to mind. The tale of the professor who makes a deal with the devil for infinite knowledge and the restoration of youth, only to betray himself by lust, seemed perfect. The three-act opera is for tenor and piano and in a Goethe-era English translation by Anna Swanwick. She was the leading translator of Goethe of her day and one of the first advocates for womenâ??s rights. Every word Faust sings is a line from the play.The opera is set in a miserable single-occupancy hotel room furnished with an iron cot, a beat-up dresser and a tattered arm chair. Faust, disheveled and in his pajamas, lives out the drama. The ensuing events, the feverish creations of an addled brain, are all real to Faust. He sees and interacts with the other two characters â?? the devil and Gretchen â?? and flies to hell to dance at the Witches Sabbath. Both the tenor and piano parts are equally demanding and require artists of the first order. The tenor part covers a great range â?? both vocally and dramatically. The transcriptions of the 70 Fugues began way back in 1974 in Rome by Santino Cara, and only in 2020 in agreement with the Baroque Academy of Musical Scores of Rome, we thought of bringing together all these works in a book to print and in 2023 it was published for the first time in Rome and online on music industry websites.

The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. Allegro moderato (E minor)Forlane. Allegretto (E minor)Rigaudon. Assez vif (C major)Menuet. Allegro moderato (G major)Toccata. Vif (E minor) Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.The movements used were Nos.1, 3, 5 and 4 in that order.The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was written as early as 1704 while the composer was in his teens, which could explain some of its unusual features. It first appeared in publication in 1833 by way of Felix Mendelssohn. The first appearance of this work as a transcription and recording for brass came in 1979 by Frederick Mills and the Canadian Brass, becoming an iconic work in the ensemble's repertoire. Ralph Sauer has had a great deal of success with his transcriptions of Bach's works. This work of about 9 minutes in length for 8-part Trombone Ensemble of advanced performers is brilliantly thought out and can be the cornerstone of a concert program.

In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's ....... The 24 pieces contained in my Short Stories for piano were composed between 2013-2018. I had originally grouped the pieces into a collection titled The Well-Blended Primer (subsequently withdrawn). I substantially revised, in some cases reconceived, the entire collection in 2017-18. Because my original intention was to include pieces that exhibited pitch centricity around each of the 24 possible major and minor keys, the earlier title, refering to J. S. Bach's 2-volume Das wohltemperierte Klavier, seemed to fit. As in Bach's work, some of the pieces in my collection exhibited a pronounced contrapuntal attitude. During the development of the work I had planned to alternate prelude and fugue-like pieces, but the end result was more of a hybrid collection that could be thought of as being influenced by Bach, but even more so by Chopin's group of 24 one-of-each-key Preludes, and systematically key-centered contrapuntal collections by Hindemith and Shostakovich. I was also influenced by shorter character pieces by composers such as Schumann, Debussy and Prokofiev that exhibit a more lyrical, narrative nature, to name only a few composers. In Short Stories, my plan to alternate preludes and fugues, or at least to systematically vary the degree of contrapuntal density, isn't readily perceived. There is certainly enforced variety in pitch centricity, but this feature isn't arranged symmetrically, and there is a range of tonal, modal, chromatic and atonal languages explored in the collection. Stylistically, there are many influences to be heard here. In fact, some of the titles of the individual pieces refer to other piano composers (for example Tea with Claude and Maurice, Czerny's Id, George Sand's Dream and Joplin's Tick). The name of the present work, Short Stories, describes these modest narratives better than the original title and the revised collection is less abstract than the 2013 version. From a pianist's standpoint, I would venture to say, these reconceived pieces are more concerned with color, register and voicings particular to the instrument. Some of the more extensive revisions I made to the original pieces were stylistic ones involving changes in the harmonic language and articulation. This is the only known six-voice fugue in music literature; and despite the title, Bach himself thought of it as such, often referring to it as his Prussian Fugue. By the time of Bach, distinctions had nearly disappeared between ricercari and fugues. Most organists, however, stick to the painfully slow tempi of ricercari in performance, and speeding it up a bit in this arrangement makes it much more accessible to players and listeners alike. The FINALE audio extract is a bit misleading, as there is no sound bank for flugelhorns; but you certainly get the drift. It's a bit of a haul; a C trumpet part has been included as a substitute for the Eb trumpet called for in the score. This piece would work well as a brass ensemble chart.
