Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889880). Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra The first and third movements are lively, the second is reflective. There are several solo passages for other players. This was first performed by professional musicians including John Thomas, trumpet soloist, at a composers' workshop at Bard College on August 1, 2003. The orchestra was tiny, with only one player per string part, one each of flute, oboe/English horn, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trombone, and two percussionists and very little rehearsing was possible. The audio clip is of that performance, 3rd movement. Please listen to the other movements at my website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. Provided here are the complete orchestra score, a piano reduction of the orchestra, and the solo trumpet parts for both B flat and E flat trumpet. Each has been preferred by some soloists. A complete set of parts is available separately for $20. Also available separately for $20 is an arrangement for brass septet with the 2 trumpet players sharing the solo part. Included with the septet is an arrangement of the 3rd movement for brass dectet. Duration: about 15 minutes Year: 2003.

There are three musical settings, each about 4 to 5 minutes long. The first version is spare, with only flute accompaniment. The second is in baroque style with flute and cello accompaniment. The third is a blues-style version with piano added. Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889873). There are 3 movements. Sarabande, March, and Fugue, ranging from 3 to 5 minutes in duration. The Sarabande is serious and melodic, the March is cute, and the Fugue is an orchestrated version of my Fugue for Four Winds. You can get some idea of the sound of Sarabande and March by listening to the sound clips of the versions of them in my Seven Easy Melodies for Oboe with Piano Accompaniment, either in SheetMusicPlus or on my website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. The original Fugue for Four Winds may also be heard in these two places. Suitable for chamber orchestra. The Sarabande instruments are 2 each of flute, oboe, clarinet in A, bassoon, and horn, plus strings. In the March a trumpet (which has a nice short solo) and snare drum and triangle are added. In the Fugue, oboe 2 becomes English horn and a second trumpet is added. There are also optional parts in the Fugue for trombone, tuba, which can be covered by the bassoons, and for bells. Year: 2000.

The septet is for 2 trumpets sharing the solo, 2 horns, 2 trombones, and 1 tuba. The dectet is an arrangement of only the 3rd movement. It has 4 trumpets, 3 trombones including one bass, 1 horn, 1 euphonium and 1 tuba plus a marimba and snare drum thrown in for good measure. The septet was uploaded as 3 separate movements. Parts not labeled as to instrument in movements 2 and 3 can be identified easily from the score of that movement.

The second movement is slow and romantic and, I think, one of the best pieces I have composed. The third movement is light-hearted and contains a contrapuntal section with substantial dissonance. At the request of members of the San Francisco Civic Symphony I orchestrated two of my wind octets to be played by the orchestra in honor of the tenth anniversary of excellent and collegial conducting by Garret Gerritsen. This is the second piece that we played and is suitable for chamber orchestra, with added brass and percussion, including two horns, two trumpets, trombone, tuba, timpani and snare drum. The sound clip is of computer playback and of poor quality with disproportionately loud percussion. I suggest listening to a nice performance of the Octomarch wind octet, sound clip either here or at my music website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. I like to think of this piece as humorous so I've checked comedy below. Year 2009. Duration 3 minutes.

With frequent changes between major and minor, the stirring march themes reappear as romantic melodies. Of special interest are the trumpet and piano solos, and a section for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano, in homage to Mozart and Beethoven, who wrote beautiful quintets for this combination of instruments. Not all parts are necessary. They were included so as not to leave out members of a band I was playing in. For example, the alto clarinet part duplicates the third B flat clarinet part. There are tenor sax cues in the alto sax part for the solo in measures 46 and 47 in case a tenor sax is not available. A PIANO IS REQUIRED. I don't have a good band sound clip but you can listen to the piece arranged for wind quintet and piano. It is the 1st movement of my Sextet for Winds and Piano. This audio is attached to that piece here or on my music website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. Duration 5 minutes. Year 2000.

The music attempts to depict a not-very-nice barber, who not only spent years shaving the necks of cafeteria managers but found every excuse he could to justify cutting down trees. The mezzo-soprano is accompanied by English horn or clarinet in A, horn, bassoon, and percussion (wood files rubbed together to simulate neck shaving and tree sawing.) To aid in coordinating with the vocalist and each other, abundant cues are provided in staves parallel to the staves being played in the instrumental parts. The vocalist sings from the score. Sophie Friedman, my granddaughter, wrote 4 short poems for school when she was 8 years old. I set these to music in the form of little children's songs. The 4 short (about 2 minutes each) are Halloween, Hanukkah (the only Jewish song), Cricket, and Winter-Summer Diamante. A diamante is a diamond-shaped poem starting with one word in the first line and ending with one word in the last line. The sound clip is of Halloween.sung by Paula Arciniega, mezzo-soprano, with John McCarthy at the piano. If you listen to Hanukkah, I think you will laugh. (Any proceeds that I get from selling these songs go to Sophie.).

This contains music in several styles, both slow and lively, for solo alpenhorn and orchestra. A piano is included in the orchestra, but if not available, other instruments are provided with cues for the piano passages. It was written to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Civic Symphony, the oldest community orchestra on the West Coast. There were three performances in 2006, the anniversary year - two indoor and one outdoor. A piano reduction of the orchestra accompaniment is provided here and is also sold separately with the solo part for $5.00. Duration: 6 or 8 minutes, depending on whether an optional repeat is taken. This was written by invitation to be played by the San Francisco Civic Symphony at a ground-breaking ceremony for restoration of a windmill in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The original poem, set to music here was written by Lisa Yanover. It has been sung three times by John Kendall Bailey, once with orchestra, once with wind ensemble, and once with piano. To my knowledge the ceremony has yet to be held (as of January 2015). There are 3 offerings here at SheetMusicPlus. This one is for the orchestra score and parts, piano reduction, and baritone solo. Another, at $30 is for a wind ensemble substituting for the orchestra: score, parts, and baritone solo. The third is for piano reduction of the orchestra plus baritone solo at $5.00 Duration: 7 minutes Year: 2004.

Theme and Variations for Er Hu and Orchestra The er hu is a two-string Chinese violin, which I heard during a visit to China in August 2006. I liked the bold tone very much and decided to compose a piece for it. The theme and ending are written in Chinese style using the pentatonic or five-tone scale. The six variations move into Western harmonies and a variety of rhythms. The world premier was held on February 10, 2008. Matt Springer was soloist with the San Francisco Civic Symphony. The second performance by Matt was with the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra on June 7, 2008, John Kendall Bailey, conductor.. The audio clip is a recording of that performance. Duration: About 11 minutes Year: 2007.

A musical setting of the poem by Linda Pastan, this choral work is about winter and the feelings evoked by falling snow. Since 1966 I have lived in a part of California, where snow falls very rarely. However, I have fond memories of watching snow fall in the Cleveland, Chicago and Boston areas where I lived for many years. Playing in the snow was one of my favorite childhood activities and I still enjoy skiing in the mountains of California. Linda Pastan's poem, At My Window, evokes memories of my feelings while watching snow fall, both at my own window and outside. I am especially moved by the experience of watching snow falling in silence toward silence. In the music I have given verses of the poem to different voices to sing against a quiet background of falling snow. The piece ends with an expression of the silence, which accompanies and is embodied by the snow.
