Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

It will suit intermediate pianists at about the Grade 3 (ABRSM) standard.The time signature is 'cut common time', denoted by the symbol , which is often used instead of the time signature . This means that the crotchet (quarter note) pulse is fairly fast as the tempo of the piece is about 78 minims (half notes) per minute. However, try not to rush - if anything, it can be played slower than this.Try to keep the left hand quite light as it accompanies the right hand melody. You'll find many suggested dynamics throughout the piece, but you are welcome to try experimenting with your own!A Penny For Your Thoughts should be played in a rubato style with plenty of feeling. She reminiscences about her past memories with him and in the climax, she proclaims her love for him as she is soon to leave his side. This combination, an SSA choir with violin and piano, is chosen for it captures the character of a female speaker, and the piano adds depth to the piece but still keeps the gentleness of the message. The bright timbre of the violin as well as the use of D major is to convey positivity: this is not a sad piece. This speaker looks forward to the future and treasures their past moments together. This piece is in verse-chorus form. The chorus, starting from ‘Je t’aimerai’, and followed by ‘Jusqu’a...’ repeats three times before arriving at the final climax in A major. In between the second chorus and the third chorus, a transitional section, in F# minor, is added. This section, as it is about her difficult decision to leave, is stronger and faster than other sections. The original lyrics are inspired by a famous TV show, Game of Thrones , in which a character says the lyrics in the chorus. Different techniques are used to bring out the message in the lyrics, such as word-painting, use of harmony and instruments, and key changes. Parting is inevitable in any relationship. I hope this piece can describe some emotions and thoughts in the face of parting and can echo among not only lovers but families and friends as well.

'I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In)' arrangement for solo guitar by Antony Cull.IntroductionThis arrangement is aimed at intermediate level guitarists with a good control of natural harmonics and basic fingerstyle. The whole piece has the harmonic structure written in the chords above, which can be strummed by another player to turn the piece into a duet. Alternatively you can use these chords to accompany a singer and add the solo guitar arrangement as a introduction.Performance NotesThe first section outlines the basic harmony, often omitting notes from the chords above, to outline the melody. To keep each section distinct, keep the pace of this section slow and expressive.The next section has a celtic inspired feel, with the constant quavers throughout to drive the piece forward. Note the increase in tempo, but adjust to a comfortable speed for your ability as you are mostly aiming to play faster then the introduction. Practice this section slowly at first, taking time to choose the most comfortable finger position. Once you have the fingering locked in, work on making the melody pop out from the over all picking pattern, relax the attack on the thumb to help this.The third section uses natural harmonics to play the melody. To play a natural harmonic place you fretting finger lightly on the string above the stated fret. As you pick the string, remove your you finger and you should get a bell like tome that sounds a different pitch to the open string. Let each string ring out after each harmonic is played over the subsequent notes until another note is played on that string. In bar 19 and 23 there is a single fretted note so be prepared to switch technique on a dime. This will create a rich harp like feel to the piece that will give a really christmassy feel.The only big change in the coda is a gentle ritardando and an arppegiated harmonic across three strings. Gently place a finger across the three strings and role them off the as they are picked. Final ThoughtsI am a really big fan of tight arrangements and love constructing arrangements for my students. One of my greatest challenges is creating performance pieces for guitarists that don't sing. This is especially ponient during the holidays when everyone wants to hear all the classics. This piece is extremely musical and the harmonics are a real crowd pleaser. When Cuarteto Casals approached me with the idea of illuminating Beethoven´s quartets anew, you can imagine the many thoughts and feelings that where going through my mind: what a joy, what a great honor… What an intriguing head-scratcher! How can you possibly shine a new light on something that is already perfect? Weeks, months went by in search of a common ground between the Master and myself until I finally found it in the realization that a word lays “hidden†in the St. John’s hymn that gave musical notes their original name: ‘Re, Sol, Ut, Io’ (D, G, C, B in English music notation) Perfect! “Resolutio†in Latin means both the resolution of a problem and the re-solution: a re-blend of many elements that will eventually coagulate to make something new. There was finally the melodic and a rhythmical canvas for my piece. On this canvas I wrote the story of a funny little contest, played on a sunny Mediterranean square, between street musicians and Cuarteto Casals just minutes before they are about to go on stage to perform Beethoven´s “Harp Quartetâ€. After all the characters, each in his own way, had the chance to tell their story, a gentle rain starts to fall, dissolving (Re-solving) again the music sheet to eventually leave us with just a white piece of paper for somebody else to continue the Work.
