Key Signature: G majorTime Signature: 3/4Tempo: Vivace, ma ritmico (vivace, considerably, 148bpm)Difficulty: IntermediateWilliam Alwyn (1905-1985) Fantasy Waltzes: No. 8 in G Major The Fantasy Waltzes is a suite of eleven piano pieces composed in London between June 1954 and April 1955 and is arguably one of Alwyn’s finest works for piano solo. Alwyn uses the basic three-four waltz rhythm with a great variety of style, and much of the music has that of a romantic approach, although here and there are nods to the composer’s earlier neo-classical style. The idea for the Fantasy Waltzes originated while Alwyn was on holiday in Norway after a visit to Grieg’s lakeside home. Although conceived as a continuous cycle, the suite does divide into two parts, Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 7-11, which encompass many moods from happy to sad, to mysterious and solemn, with the eighth waltz being one of the most attractive of the set. The Fantasy Waltzes are dedicated to the New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell, who gave the first performance of the work in a BBC broadcast on 2nd June 1957. Less than a year later, Farrell’s promising career as a concert pianist was cut tragically short after being killed in a car accident. Alwyn admired Farrell’s playing greatly and dedicated the fifth of his Twelve Preludes for piano to Farrell’s memory.

It was originally written for solo trombone and orchestra (unpublished) by Chinese composer You Dao Ma (1915-2010). The composer adapted the Inner Mongolian folk song Gada Meiren, also the name of the Inner Mongolian hero. The trombone and piano version of this piece was first published in China in 1959. Gada Meiren Theme and Variation Fantasy is a single movement work that depicts a story with four distinct parts. Part one: The repressed emotions of the Inner Mongolian people under the ruler. Gada Meiren led his people to fight against the ruler to protect their home and land. Part two: Gada Meiren's nostalgia for his homeland and people when fighting away from home. Part three: Gada Meiren's death in the battle. People mourned their hero with great sadness. Epilogue: People's remembrance and praise for their hero Gada Meiren, carrying his spirit moving forward. Taken from the 1959 version, this new edition of Gada Meiren Theme and Variation Fantasy for solo Trombone and Piano has fixed notation errors, added dynamics, articulations, tempo (bpm) markings, rearranged the piano score and solo part. All original Chinese terms in scores are translated into western standard musical terms. The solo is about 9.5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889441). Celtiberian Fantasy For Violin And Cello Celtiberian Fantasy was composed while righting a finale for the Princess of Sintra, both pieces are „sisters. To the last note of „The Princess Of Sintra follows the first of the „Celtiberian Fantasy. Together with the „Celtiberian Dance as an Intro all this 3 pieces can be performed one after the other without interruption. Some interpretation symbols where used in the score, they are mere personal suggestions for a performance. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. The bowing is very often simply used as a reference to musical legato. The staccato is meant to shorten the length of the notes to half of its duration and is often used to simplify the righting and the reading of the score. The piece is not difficult but it requires focused endurance and some practice on certain passages. Once learned you will never forget it. When performed Live It will give you back a great feedback from the public, you will always want to have it in your repertoire. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! It is a very flexible piece that can be used in all kinds of events. Tha most significant thing for me is that they show two very important and contrasting moments in Violeta's life: wnen she falls in love and is happy, and when she senses the near approach of death. I recorded a CD with different opera fantasies, and this inspired me to compose my fantasy on La Traviata. Enjoy!
