Quartet for Piano and Strings (A Sea Liturgy) (2009) was jointly commissioned for the Moscow Studio for New Music and the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble (Sarah Darling, artistic director). It is dedicated to the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble on its 10th anniversary. The work is cast in a single movement and is conceived as a sea liturgy. It attempts to conjure up an imagined set of spiritual rituals (not connected to any specific religion)-a ceremony of transformation and renewal performed in the context of a sea landscape. Though not broken into movements, the formal design of the work could be seen as follows: Processional - (Ritornello) - Invocation - Offering - (Ritornello) - Baptism - Rebirth - Recessional As with so many of my works, much of the initial musical planning took place in the context of the oceanscapes of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Those particular sea landscape were foremost in my mind while writing. The listener may also discard the imagined liturgical apparatus and simply listen to the work as a series of seascapes. (For the purposes of narrative clarity, the above section descriptors will be used in the below narrative.) The opening Processional begins with focused, austere intensity: the instruments unfold from a single pitch (E) into a more rich harmonic landscape. A Ritornello of pulsating string harmonics leads into Invocation, a warmly lyrical discourse. The Offering is a faster, jubilant development of the Invocation, where the prayerful melodies of the Invocation are transformed into a gift for the sea. A return of the Ritornello leads to the Baptism. In this section, heterophonic melodies unfold out of the new substrate pitch (D). In the transforming crucible of the water, these lines becomes more and more extended harmonically. The Rebirth is a dancing development of the Baptism; the harmonic extensions are pushed from dissonance into chords of pure joy. Emerging out of the afterglow of the Rebirth is the Recessional, in which the music of the Processional is revisited, now transformed by the ritual to center on the pitch D. The Recessional fades away peacefully, yet fervently.

Shining Space: Quintet for Horn and Strings (2006) was commissioned by and is dedicatedto Hazel Dean Davis and Stephen Hackbarth on the occasion of their marriage, June 24, 2006.The work was premiered by James Sommerville, horn with Sarah Kapustin and FrancescaAnderegg, violins, Nathan Burke, viola, and Peter Lorenzo Anderegg, cello.The basic musical material for the work is a set of intervals which is gradually “expandedoutward†– moving from close dissonance to luminous consonance. This could be seen torepresent a sense of freedom, growth, and a bright future.The first movement, Bright Morning Sky, begins vibrantly with ecstatic ringing in the higherstrings. The cello presents the work’s basic pitch material in dramatic gestures. The hornthen enters: first abortively and then affirmatively – changing the texture to focus on itself.The horn continues lyrical melodic development while the strings react, dissipating theirinitial energy. Nervous tremolos in the strings start to build back energy again, leading to awild climax. The music then relaxes into the next section marked “Slow, suspended.†Thehorn and strings interact melodically, supported by luminous harmonies. The nervoustremolos return, regaining energy towards the coda. The work ends with the ecstatic ringingof the opening – but,this time, the harmonic material is open and bright.The second movement, I Am the Vine, is serene and expressive – consisting of a series ofcanons which develop, break-off, and start again. The canons are almost always in twovoices – representing two lives intertwining.The third movement, Chasing Windflower, returns to the energy of the opening movement.However, the harmonic language begins this time with the open sonorities. Darker colors(from the first movement) continue to interject, but are always overwhelmed by a sense offree-wheeling excitement. The work presses on to an ecstatic coda – with a sense ofunfettered joy.

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977034). Each of these four short pieces has its own character, color and rhythmic flow. Because the interplay between parts is sometimes complex and challenging, they can provide wonderful ensemble workouts for performers as well as fun and exciting musical experiences for audiences. The title Harmonic Spaces refers to both the idea that they are musical spaces filled with colors and characters as well as to the widely-spaced harmonic intervals upon which those aspects are built. Each movement is based on one or two wide intervals that mimic the spacing of overtones (or partials) in the harmonic series. This approach allowed the composer to produce unique harmonies, colors and atmospheres. For listeners, of course, knowledge of these intervals isn't important, even though the colors, characters and atmospheres they produce is. Each movement is described briefly below: I - Simply and gracefully moving forward. (9th and 3rd partials)This gently flowing movement is a slow progression of widely-spaced chords with gracefully rising and falling strings of notes woven in and around them. The chords often appear in groups of two, with the second being quieter, like an echo of the first. That creates a sense of harmonic space within which the delicate lines move in and out of agreement with the chords.II - With a steady, even flow (or groove). (7th and 5th partials)The harmonic partials of this movement are what give dominant 7th chords their characteristic sound and function. Furthermore, because 7th chords are an important part of jazz harmony, jazz influences enter into this piece. Listeners may notice the outlines of gliding 7th chords, swinging meters and syncopated rhtyhms reminiscent of jazz.III - Gentle, flexible, but rhythmically accurate. (11th Partial)This movement unfolds slowly like a quiet summer afternoon under a shade tree watching lazy clouds. Because the 11th partial is a note that falls between the cracks of the piano keyboard, both the perfect 4th and augmented 4th (in very wide spacing) are used to approximate it. Although this creates some non-traditional harmonies and non-chord tone effects, the piece is tranquil, peaceful and beautiful. IV - With precision, energy and excitement. (13th Partial)This energetic finale uses much syncopation and rhythmic interplay as well as wide-ranging arpeggios that get shared between the two players. The primary interval often appears as widely spaced parallel motion, which adds a special color or flavor to the rhythms. The result is a joyful romp in a playground of rhythm, color, motion and contrast. The 35th etude is just that. Here is an arrangement for intermediate string orchestra. The first violin part goes as high as 4th finger in 4th position on the E string (also a harmonic), and has a lot of passages in 3rd position. There are some strange chords with accidentals as well, but this is relatively easy for an intermediate string ensemble.With the optional repeat, the March runs between 4 1/2 and 5 minutes.

Quintet for Bassoon and Strings (2005–08) was commissioned by The Commission Projectand is dedicated to Klaus Heymann, in tribute for his invigoration of the classical recordingindustry and his enthusiastic support for the composers of our time.The original conception for the work was devised during an extremely foggy week onNantucket Island, Massachusetts in the summer of 2005. It is music deeply connected to theocean landscape. Throughout the work, the strings often present a fog-like backdrop,through which the bassoon’s color emerges like a lighthouse beacon—lyrical and flexible.The work opens with a series of interlocking, nebulous figurations in the strings thatgradually build in intensity. The bassoon unfolds the work’s basic melodic material in a freesolo that also increases in intensity. At the point of climax, the tempo suddenly slowsdramatically, and a tender, lyrical cantilena emerges. As this music dissolves, a bouncy andenergetic music takes the foreground. It climaxes in a bassoon cadenza. Though the bassoonhas played the leader throughout, this is the first time it is heard unaccompanied. A brief,but vigorous afterglow recalls the opening of the work. The final section emerges out of it: aseries of high, distant harmonics (perhaps harbor buoys) in the strings through which thebassoon sings a final song.

Along with Korea’s representative folk song “Arirang,†“Bird, Bird, Bluebird†is also music that contains the life and soul of ancestors, and is a valuable cultural heritage of Korea. A quiet and lyrical theme gradually escalates and repeats itself. Subsequently, the theme is played alternately for each part with the tonal change of the circle of perfect fifths descending for each part. At the end of the cadenza, the theme is played with harmonics that give an oriental feel. The bass and treble parts alternately play the main theme, and in the finale, the majestic chords and tense notes create a sense of musical height and end in a passionate atmosphere.
