This is the third of the set and has been arranged for flute, oboe and basoon or cello. The three movements, Andante moderato, Poco Adagio and Presto are well contrasted and will provide enjoyment for three equal players and their audiences. In arranging the Divertimento necessary changes of octave have been made in the upper parts. Some alterations to dynamics, articulations and accompanying figures have been made which reflect and accommodate the sonorities and techniques of the change from string to wind ensemble.

The famous theme and one of the variations explore the subtle contrast between bassoon and English horn. The original repeats are opened up and scored differently, using contrasting colors and combinations of solo clarinet, solo flute, piccolo, and soprano saxophone. A repeated section first has a flute and oboe accompanied with clarinets, then a saxophone quartet on the repeat. One variation features a solo piccolo and bells. And a prominent pair of horns recalls the sound of Haydn's divertimenti for wind ensemble. Duration: approx. 6:00. Written for an adult community band, this challenging arrangement is appropriate for a university, college, or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. The bassoon, English horn, and soprano saxophone parts are all fully cued to allow rehearsal or performance in the absence of any or all of them. Two strong horn players are essential; but the third and fourth horn parts are easier, and cued in trombones and euphonium. The bassoon parts use the tenor clef and ascend to a high B-flat; the second bassoon has only one 8-measure high passage that doubles the horns and can be omitted if necessary. The alternate versions of both bassoon parts use only bass clef but are otherwise identical. This beautiful, melodious and fun piece, which plays for 12 minutes and 17 seconds on the CD, is scored in a bright F major key, has two sections in C major, and employs 43 orchestral instruments, played by 40 musicians. Two percussionists play five instruments. The pianist directs and conducts the work from the piano, or a conductor may be employed instead. I chose a concert grand piano, or a baby grand piano, and a concert harp as the two leading, but not solo, orchestral instruments which are used to showcase the piece. I have included a .mp3 audio clip of this piece to illustrate the neo-classical melodies in it. Divertimenti, were first written by Franz Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during the Classical period, between 1750 and 1809. A divertimento is a short, entertaining, chamber ensemble or orchestral work, usually in the form of an orchestral suite, written in several sections and/or movements. It can have as few as three, or many more instruments! A divertimento does not have a strict format, but a liberal one, within acceptable limits or conventions, and only small chamber ensembles were employed to perform divertimenti in Haydn's and Mozart's day in the eighteenth century. Both a divertimento and a cassation may contain a leading or obbligato instrument(s), or can even be integrated with vocal or choral music. However, divertimenti and cassations never have solo instruments, as in a concerto. An Opus number 1, means that this is the first written work of a composer; opus 2 means the second work, and so forth. 'Opus' means a work, or composition. I sub-titled the piece: Luna Park rides, Milson's Point, N.S.W., 2061, Australia, and circus sideshows. I chose this sub-title because the work reminds me of my childhood days, of the rides at Luna Park, Sydney, such as the Merry-go-Round, the Ferris Wheel, the Cha-Cha, the Dodgem cars, the Rotor, the Mirror Maze, the slippery dips in Coney Island, the River Caves, the Ghost Train - burnt down presumably due to an electrical fault, in December, 1974, killing 7 people, the Giant Pendulum ride, the Giant Spider ride, the Big Dipper, later renamed the Wild Cat and later the Wild Mouse, which is actually a Roller-coaster ride. Some of the Harp part sounds like the movement of the Roller-coaster! Also, the work reminisces on my experience of the Sole Brothers' Circus sideshows, in 1977, such as the targeting games and prizes, and clowns sideshows, which my dad took me to see when I was about 12 years old.

The present work was advertised by Breitkopf in 1767 (Supplement II) but it was certainly composed in the previous year at the latest as the copy upon which this edition is based carries the performance date '15 Dezemb. 766' on the wrapper. A copy attributed to Joseph Haydn (and catalogued by Hoboken as II D6) is now preserved in the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien: 'Divertimento in D / Flauto Traverso unison / Violino Concertato / Viola di Alto Oblig. / con / Basso / Del Sigre Giuseppe Haydn M. Doc LXVS / a / uso di Antonio Schaarschmidt 1767'. This edition is based on a set of MS parts now held in the Austrian National Library under the shelfmark S.m.11946. The wrapper reads: 'No.5 [No.1] / Divertimento / a / Flauto Traverso / Violino / Viola / e / Basso / Del / Sige: Leopoldo Hoffmann'. In the absence of both the autograph score and an authentic set of parts, this edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of the composer as transmitted in the source. As is often the case in Hofmann's chamber music there are very few dynamic markings; these are left to the discretion and good taste of the performer. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the source, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the present manuscript is inconsistent at times in its notation of appoggiature ; these too have been standardised to minimise confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Allan Badley.

While trying to search for appropriate titular words which would somehow describe the content of the piece, I kept thinking how light-hearted the musical flow of the whole composition really is. Searching through similar light minded musical content, I did not have to search for long, before I came across the divertimenti of the late 18th century (works by both Wolfgang A. & Leopold Mozart, Haydn, Stamitz, etc.). The informality and casual manner of my piece, as well as the fact that it draws its thematic material from the concept of “absolute†music - without any presupposed program - reminds me of those times, style and the presented musical form established then. It was a very curious commission; for these concertos were to be written for a pair of strange instruments, the so-called Lira organizzata. In a letter from the King of Neaples there are two points which explain much of the peculiar character of Haydn’s concertos for the King: the first is the restricted tonal range of all the works, C, F and G major are the only principal keys allowed. The second is the range of the lira itself which is about that of an oboe. Bearing these limitations in mind, Haydn did not attempt to write complicated double concertos, but rather ensemble music for two lire, two violins, two violas, cello and two horns, in other words, 9 solo instruments. (This edition: Flute, oboe, two clarinets, two basset horns, bassoon, contrabass and two horns). Moreover, he neatly combined the concerto form with that of the divertimento: there is often no strict division into solo and tutti, but constant intermingling of both. Wonderful music by Haydn, originally written for a mixed ensemble of 2 liras, 2 Horns and strings, but this is a transcription for a classical wind ensemble, a great companion for a concert together with i.e. Mozart’s Gran Partita, since it has almost the same instrumentation.

This theme is originally attributed to Franz Joseph Haydn, who included it as the slow movement of his Divertimento for Winds in Bb, Hob.II:46. However, it's uncertain whether he actually wrote the theme or took it from another source (like a hymn tune, which the St. Anthony name would suggest, or a folksong). Several decades later, Johannes Brahms ran across Haydn's Divertimento, liked the theme, and used it in his Variations on a Theme by Haydn, now the most famous setting of this theme. Carl Czerny also used it for a variation set. Specifically arranged for the early-stage piano student who is just beginning to play hands together, and for teachers who don't wish to prolong the hands alone stage, this unique adaptation keeps the hands in rhythmic unison and symmetrical contrary motion, optimizing ease of playing when first beginning to engage the both hands motor area of the brain. Throughout the piece, the student uses the same finger at the same time in both hands, and the fingers are matched to both-white or both-black keys, respectively. Strongly auditory and kinesthetic learners who don't require visual feedback may successfully learn this piece via rote instruction, too. This arrangement has also been designed so that it can work in both 2-piano 4-hands and 1-piano 4-hands settings.Additionally, the transposition to G-flat major (from B-flat) allows the student to take advantage of the black keys' inherent posture- and accuracy-enhancing qualities, which are vital in those early lessons when correct technique habits need to be installed. Finally, particularly for the adult student who's keen to dive into the classical repertoire: this is a genuine, well-known piece of music treated by multiple famous composers from the common practice era. Even finicky audience members will enjoy this piece, which will not sound like something a first-year piano student might play: some of the world's most elite orchestras have also recorded this work in Brahms's arrangement. Given that the tune is potentially a bit long for a beginner student, I've placed a double bar after m. 10, noting that if necessary, a student could excerpt mm. 1-10 and perform these without the middle section and return of A. I have not reproduced Haydn's original(?) repeats, but the student and teacher could add them if desired. The PDF, when purchased, will include both the student part (half of which is pictured) and a full score in standard notation for the teacher.
