Chiquinha Gonzaga's first composition, in 1877, born out of improvisation in a choro circle at the home of composer Henrique Alves de Mesquita, the polka received the name Atraente (attractive) for dragging the instruments present. It was a resounding success (15 editions in 1877) and projected the name of Chiquinha Gonzaga to fame - at first uncomfortable - in the patriarchal society of the Second Reign. The sudden popularity of the author was seen as a provocation by her family, who began to destroy the sheet music sold on the streets by slave boys. It became a classic of Brazilian instrumental music and became part of the great choro repertoire. It was published in 1932 as No. 11 of the 2nd series of Alma Brasileira, choros for flute. Atraente was recorded by musicians such as Antonio Adolfo, Altamiro Carrilho, Benedito Lacerda, Clara Sverner, Eudóxia de Barros, Henrique Cazes, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Muraro, Paulo Moura, Pixinguinha, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, in addition to orchestras and bands. At the end of the 1970s, HermÃnio Bello de Carvalho wrote the lyrics, in records made by Leci Brandão, OlÃvia Hime and Edison Cordeiro.

In the Hall of the Mountain King was originally written by Edvard Grieg as incidental music (basically background music) for a scene in Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. The truly distinctive sound has ensured that the piece has continued to be played and arranged for all sorts of groups in the almost century-and-a-half since the play was first performed. This particular arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for a Mixed Clarinet Quartet: 2 Bb clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, and 1 bass clarinet. The melody stays primarily in Clarinet 1 but does jump between the top three parts and players will need to be able to play most of the range of the instrument regardless of which part they are playing. That said, most intermediate players should be able to play this piece given they have the range and it will be a challenge for less experienced players. This arrangement also available for Bb Clarinet Quartet and the sound samples for this listing come from that arrangement. Taking inspiration from the original and several other different covers of this song, I've written out what is probably one of my favorite arrangements I've written. It's sure to challenge your performers and keep your audience engaged from start to finish!It starts with a soft drone in the Basses that continuously adds chord tones and volume to build sonic intensity and set the tone right out of the gate! We then move on to a slowed down first verse with the melody supported only by chords in the choir. Vocal Percussion leads us into a tempo change and explosive snippet of the melody before the piece hits its stride. Lots of upbeats, syncopations, and altered melodic tones throughout adds a high level of difficulty to this piece. As we get to the end of this piece, the ensemble will suddenly alter time to a half time feel that not only adds to excitement but also helps to bring the piece to a dramatic closing.This is written for Solo voice and SSAATTBB choir and a Vocal Percussionist.As with most of my arrangements I leave many of the syllables blank to encourage the director/performers to put their own spin on the arrangement with their own choice of syllables! Suggested syllables in certain spots and all necessary melodic lyrics have all been included for you!I hope that you and your group enjoys my arrangement!
