Published by Erik Cole (A0.996121). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Faced with trying to recreate the uniqueness of Ravel’s use of the solo Alto Saxophone, I decided to give that part to a solo Oboe d’Amore. It’s quite distinct, and conveniently just exactly fits into the range of the instrument. Many groups won’t have access to a d’amore, though, so I have included an alternate part for English Horn. Using it does make this the only movement that requires 2 English Horns, however. This is also the movement where I discovered that the cheap recording equipment I’m using currently doesn’t like long sustained tones, and there are a lot of them in this movement. For whatever reason, there’s a lot of distortion on them in the MP3, and I apologize for not being able to figure out how to correct that.

The contemporary nature of these pieces comes partly from the individual titles. How many times have we heard on the phone, 'This conversation will be recorded for quality control'? So the first rag is 'This Piece May Be Recorded for Quality Control.' Why? Because the main sections are in seven sharps. Best of luck to you. The second rag refers to the modern computer age: 'Press Any Key to Continue,' and the beginning is indeed a seemingly random series of notes, which are then gathered together for a chord. This chord then forms basic material for the rest of the piece. The final rag borrows from merchants who may, for instance, have circulated an ad with a misprint. Correcting the misprint, the merchant then invariably offers this: 'We Apologize for Any Inconvenience.' So how inconvenient is the rag I have written? Haha: play through it and you will discover quite a few inconveniences. But I apologize for them in advance.

The mezzo-soprano part was assigned the descant due to where my computer placed the parts, and I have a note about that, so I understand that is not correct and I apologize if you're picky about that like me. Anyway, I think it sounds really catchy. It's arranged in the key of F major, which is slightly higher to better fit the alto line. If you would like, you could use the alto line as a solo part and give the altos the bottom note of the soprano note. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this arrangement. It was really fun to arrange, and I imagine it is really fun to perform. :).

It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. The original orchestration for this very famous movement is enormous. As a result, it's exhausting to play a reduced transcription, cause, except for the chorales, I pretty much needed all the instruments all the time. It's especially exhausting if you've played the whole rest of the piece first. That aside, I think this does a pretty good job of recreating the Ravel orchestration.

The middle section of this movement, with all the tremolos and trills, works much better for strings than for double reeds. Still, I was fairly pleased with how the recording of it turned out. The outer sections of the movement are quite difficult because of the extreme ranges that are consistently needed.

Both of these movements are fairly short and unlikely to be performed unless the entire piece is being performed, so I bundled them together. Con Mortuis functions as the final Promenade for the whole piece, and features high tremolos and the harp, which made for some transcription challenges. The first oboe part is quite difficult, and the high octave can be omitted if necessary.

It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon.

In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. This movement is quite fun, and works pretty well for the double reed choir, except for the trills. The high trills are all doable, but are definitely a big challenge.
