The arrangement begins with the arrival of the storm, which gradually fades and passes, resolving into a thoughtful reflection on the woes caused by the tempest. The storm returns with building fury but quickly passes, once again settling into stillness. Just before the song's ending, the storm echoes off in the distance, letting us know that our troubles may not yet be over. This is the ninth arrangement in my Contemplative Spirituals for Solo Piano collection.

Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, The Outback, is set in the abandoned gold mining town of Goongarrie in the state WA. It depicts sunrise in the outback, the gradual heating up of the day, the scourge of blow flies, the searing and unbearable heat of midday, a sudden flash thunderstorm, and, as the storm clears, sunset over the abandoned town.

My first acquaintance with Lars Ek Hot Trio refers to the autumn of 1982. It took place in Bergen during the annual enrollment of accordionist by the name TREKKSPILLGALLA In Grieghallen where Lars Ek until now been unknown. It has become a tradition with a Swedish touch during these autumn hits. Strong names Ebbe Jularbo, Roland Cedermark, Norwegian-Swede Olaf Wernersen to name a few. But no one has so far been stormed the audience as Lars Ek Hot Trio did. To experience the original Frosini, Nisse Lind, Ragnar Sundquist represents something new and good in the Accordion music. Genuine original accordion music that we remember so dearly good from the 1930-40's and which had been lying idle since then. The above-mentioned debut has caused several national border crossings for the trio. The last is the spring tour in western Norway this year (1985), where I had the honor to accompany the ensemble from Nor fjord Bergen. An experience for both the audience and the musicians. Yet we feel the turbulence after Lasses bellows murmur down the valley-society’s country. At Voss reached climax when history's first Trekkspill-fan-club became a fact of Lars Ek Fan Club. In alternating western country natural emanation from our flower at the fjord to the mountain huge snowstorm where we stood firm on the Vika Mountain on our way to Voss. After waiting up to a snow plow and colon driving, Lars Ek experience a new Norway. These strong impression of the natural contrasts mixed with the local population intimacy and spontaneity and contact Lasse put on the idea of a Norway-LP, which therefore now been completed in record time. Finally, I would quote one of Norway's largest newspapers to: Lars Ek is the best we have heard - and seen - on the accordion. Do not let it go three more years before he is in Bergen again. History of the United States Navy and the Navy HymnOn August 26, 1775, the General Assembly of Rhode Island passed a resolution to create the Continental Fleet, to be funded by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. But on October 3, 1775, Congress rejected it. On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress changed courses and established the Continental Navy. This was the birth of the United States Navy. The Continental Navy obtained and armed two civilian vessels, the Andrew Doria and the Cabot. The first United States Navy ship was the USS Alfred, which was commissioned by Captain Dudley Saltonstall on December 3, 1775. John Adams served as the first Chairman of the Naval Committee, but in 1776 the Continental Congress appointed Commodore Esek Hopkins to be the Navy’s first Commander. After the Revolutionary War, the government abolished the Continental Navy. But 11 years later, Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794, which created the United States Navy. The Navy was involved in the Revolutionary War (1775 – 1776), the War of 1812 (1812 – 1815), the Civil World (1861 – 1865), the Mexican-American War (1846 – 1848), the Spanish-American War (1898), World War I (1914 – 1918), World War II (1939 – 1945), the Korean conflict, the Vietnam conflict (1964 – 1975), the war on terrorism through various military operations around the world (1987 – 2021) ), Operation Earnest Will (1987 – 1988), Operation Praying Mantis in the Persian Gulf (1988), Operation Urgent Fury at the invasion of Grenada (1983), Operation Desert Shield (1990 – 1991) and Operation Desert Storm (1991) which comprised the Gulf War, Operation Deliberate Force which was the invasion of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1995), Operation Allied Force which was the attack on Yugoslavia (1999), Operation Desert Fox which was the bombing of Iraq (1998), Operation Southern Watch which was the aerial patrolling of Iraq (1992 – 2003), Operation Enduring Freedom at the invasion of Afghanistan (2001 – 2021), and Operation Iraqi Freedom at the invasion of Iraq (2003 – 2011). The Navy emerged from World War II as the most powerful Navy in the world.In 1860, William Whiting of Winchester, England, wrote a poem titled “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” for one of his students, who was preparing to sail for the United States. The poem alludes to Psalm 107 and is a prayer for God’s protection from seafaring danger. In 1861, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes, an Anglican clergyman, composed the tune “Melita,” in 88 88 88 iambic meter, to accompany the hymn. “Melita” is the archaic name of Malta, which is an ancient seafaring nation. It was the site of the shipwreck that involved the Apostle Paul, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, chapters 27–28. In 1814, Malta became the Crown Colony of the United Kingdom, but in 1964 it gained independence and joined the British Commonwealth. The hymn has long been used by Navy and civilian chaplains during chapel services at sea, in navy and civilian maritime contexts. The Royal Navy, navies of the British Commonwealth, and the United States Navy adopted the hymn in the late 19th century as “The Navy Hymn.” Many verses have been written to Melita. James F. Linzey selected the four verses by Whiting (verses 1-3) and Hamilton (verse 4), which are the verses traditionally used in the Armed Forces Hymnal. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

The History of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps HymnOn November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish the Continental Marines. is marked the formation of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps was provided two battalions with a fleet. But the Treaty of Paris in April 1783 ended the Marine Corps along with the Revolutionary War. It was later permanently re-established on July 11, 1798. Since then the United States Marine Corps has been involved in the War of 1812, defending Washington in Bladensburg, Maryland, fighting for Andrew Jackson against the British in New Orleans, and fighting in the Mexican War (1846-1848) in which US Marines fought all the way to the Halls of Montezuma, Mexico City. The Marines served in the Civil War (1861-1865), the Spanish-American War (1898), the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902), the Boxer Rebellion in China (1900), and World War I. The Marines were later involved in World War II, the Korean conflict beginning in 1950, and the Vietnam conflict, beginning in 1965. By the 1970s, the Marines were securing NATO, and later were involved in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (1990s), Somalia (1992), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2002), and in various conflicts since then. Since the inception of the Marine Corps in 1775,about 70,000 Marines have been killed in action. James Linzey served as a chaplain for the Marines in training at Fort Lee, Virginia, and as a contract chaplain at the Airman-Marine Memorial Chapel at MCAS Miramar from 2016-2019. While at Miramar, he gave leadership seminars to the Marines on the Battle of Midway. He is one of ten children of World War II hero, the late Navy Captain Stanford E. Linzey, Jr., CHC, USN (Ret.), who survived the sinking of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Midway as a sailor, and later served with the Marines in Okinawa as a chaplain. Since the Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, it has used the Navy hymn in chapel services. What is called “The Marine’s Hymn” cannot be sung in chapel services, because it is not a song of praise. As a fighting march, its author called it a hymn in name only. So, in commemoration of the United States Marine Corps, hymn writer James F. Linzey wrote the United States Marine Corps Hymn, “Serving for Thee.” He set it to the tune of Bethany, which was written by Lowell Mason in 1841. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

The Rain in Summer is a poem that I wrote some time ago after Verlaine's Il Pleure Dans Mon Coeur, which I first studied in high school French literature classes. The Rain in Summer is a plaintive cry to a love that is feared to have been lost, a love which comes and goes as thunderstorms in the summer months. This particular piano/vocal is dedicated to Jesus and the ache one feels as the longing for the return of the savior is entertained, just as if one were enjoying a summer tea with a great love that one fears to lose at the end of a stormy summer season.

Published by Chris Cooke (A0.865253). 50 Favorite Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments is a sequel to the first book, Hymns for Solo and Duet Instruments. This second collection contains my all-time favorites and is written for early-mid-intermediate players. The hymns are written so that instruments can be mixed and matched for duet or ensemble purposes. Suitable for worship services, they can be played as offertories or special music selections, or as accompaniment to congregational singing. Many of the hymns are in the traditional hymnal keys, however, there are some that may be slightly lower to accommodate instrumental ranges. This tuba book contains only the melody of these hymns. One verse and chorus is written for each and can be repeated as needed. Hymns with a particular theme or key can be combined for a medley, e.g. I Love to Tell the Story, Oh How I Love Jesus, and He Keeps Me Singing-all are in A-flat. Melody and duet parts are available for flute/oboe, clarinet/trumpet, alto sax, French horn, and trombone/baritone/bassoon. When necessary, parts occasionally cross for ease of playing for the bass instruments. A piano accompaniment book is also available. These accompaniments are eclectic in style and span the gamut from classical to gospel.
