Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Therefore, it is invented–out of a literal need to survive–pure, genuine happiness.Future Performances: If you are interested in performing this work, please e-mail me.ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749231). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0gGRv9QE8g‘Don’t want to miss a thing’, recorded by Aerosmith, and written by Diane Warren is a hugely popular rock ballad that was a number one hit in the USA. Selling over a million copies in the UK, it reached number four in the UK singles chart. Always a favourite for weddings, Capriccio Quartet recorded it for their repertoire, and it is a song that easily lends itself to a string arrangement.I chose to stick to the original key of D, a great key for string players. At times I have thickened the texture by using double stopping. In this arrangement I have tried to use an open string wherever possible. In some cases there are bare fifths. If you prefer you can choose one of the notes to play instead, especially if this note is doubled in another part. I have also put in some bowing, but the endgame is to feel comfortable, so please feel free to change it and alter the slurring if it makes it easier. I have given the cellist some solos, but everyone in the quartet has some time in the sun in this arrangement. And don’t be afraid to use open strings in this piece, especially in the semi- quavers. They sound great!I am aiming this quartet at the professional market, for weddings and other events, but I am hopeful that younger players will also have the courage to try it, even if the intention is not to ever perform it but to have some fun! From the Music of Black Composers Series is this arrangement of the third movement Humor from William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of 4 B-flat trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, euphonium and tuba. Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the flavor of the Blues and folk music to the symphony. For Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution he incorporated into a symphonic work. How Many Ways Can I Play It? #7 Baa Baa Black Sheep is intended to help the reluctant scale learner. We have the melody, then octaves and then working the thirds in the scale of B-flat. The verse with the thirds could also be used as a duet for the melody. Then we get the scales. One set of notes, 3 different articulations to play them. Cap it off with a tricky rhythm by simply removing some of the scale notes and you have a non-stressful way to be comfortable in the key of B-flat.Â

Letter A is the melody and letter B is a duet part for you to play with your friends. Letters C and D are technical exercises of arpeggios and scales. Letter E lets you practice double tonguing. Letter F is long phrases and if you wanted to treat them as long tones it is even better! Letter G lets you practice beginning trill fingering, particularly that tricky alternate fingering between middle d and e. I think this is a lovely song and I find that it stays in my ear and I 'hear' it in my mind's ear throughout the day. It's lovely.

This arrangement starts quietly and the piano accompaniment has a tender line that weaves into the verse breaks.  Verse one and verse two do not do the chorus. We wait for it- and then FINALLY when we get to the third verse we get to play the 'He Lives!' chorus. And the flute simply states that up high on beautiful third register G while the piano finishes the phrase. It's a touching way to testify. The flute part dips down to low e, but to really play this well you need to be able to play a gorgeous high g. That's the note on which you spin a beautiful vibrato.You'll need a really good pianist.Please listen to the recording.I hope you feel and enjoy what this music can teach you in your soul.
