Gordon Cherry #4806563. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792345). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. Ralph Sauer This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. Includes: Digital .pdf w/Full Score and PartsClashing Destinies was originally a work for digital media composed in March-April of 2023, later adapted for Full Orchestra/Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Clashing Destinies takes the listener through a spiral into insanity, starting with the constant thudding of the lows. Even as different parts add on, the thudding persists, representing one's inability to think clearly. There is a sharp dissonant line initially played by the glockenspiel that comes up time and time again, representing the internal panic that cuts through one's rational thoughts during their spiral into madness. Finally we hit the breaking point, a moment of silence followed by the screams of pain one experiences after reaching their breaking point. Soon after, a screaming trumpet takes the spotlight, any form of rational thought has now dithered away. Nothing is left but screams. After an intense battle of struggling to find a grasp on reality, there is a moment of calm. Things slow down as it is believed sanity is being regained, but still, there is that persistent thudding and sharp dissonance. Alas, the realization occurs, it is impossible to regain sanity. As the brass section overtakes the calm of the woodwinds, insanity fully takes over. The homestretch of this piece is pure chaos, every motif comes back. It is one huge reprise of all the feelings that have been experienced, except now they are all sounding much more rapidly, all just a small part of the chaos that is ensuing. Now there is nothing left to do except yell for help. There are three final screams, three final pleads for help. After screaming for help, it is realized... No one is there. Now there is nothing, left unresolved, all alone in the silence.

I spent New Year's Eve 2018 in Nye, Montana, visiting family and friends. One of those friends is an imaging specialist who regaled us with an explanation of his most recent project, which he described as calibrating the moon. Specifically, he was talking about the NASA ARCSTONE mission to calibrate the moon's reflectance to use as an accurate reference, primarily in climate science. The idea is that we have all this data about global warming and atmospheric changes, and a lot of that data uses the brightness of the moon as a control variable, but we don't actually have a precise definition of how bright the moon is. Ever since I was a part of that conversation, I knew that I wanted calibrating the moon as a title, and everything that came after that plays with the idea of moon themes or of doing big impossible-sounding things. When Connor Challey approached me about writing for tuba, Calibrating the Moon was an obvious choice.The work opens with Syzygy, a term describing the straight line between the sun, moon, and Earth that occurs every new and full moon. The movement starts dark and brooding, moves to an energetic middle section, and returns to being mysterious, kind of like a lunar cycle. Fun fact: This movement's theme is actually a tuba setting of the phrase Calibrating the moon.The Second movement, Spectral Reflectance, is slow and shiny. NDSU was fortunate to have portfolio tubist (and Connor's mentor) Sam Pilafian as a visiting guest artist for several years, and I finished Syzygy around the time of his passing. I spent a lot of time thinking about Sam while putting the second movement together, and I quoted a couple of his favorite tuba concerti.The work ends with Libration. If you were to watch a time-lapse video of a lunar cycle, you'd notice that the moon not only transitions from new to full to new, but also sort of oscillates or wags. That's Libration. The music of Monologues represents three kinds of social conversations.I. Desultory - A desultory monologue is marked by a disconnected jumping or passing from one thing to another, especially things not connected with the main subject. A twelve-tone row seems to lend itself naturally to this kind of disconnected expression.II. Epigrammatic - The term might be applied to monologues in which the speaker uses few words to make important observations or statements. The clarinet’s motives seem to be interrupted by figures in the piano which are the result of the completion of the twelve-tone rows begun by the clarinet.III. Philippic - It is nearly impossible to be a part of social conversation that does not lead at some point to verbal harangues against individuals, entities, or ideologies in politics. Demosthenes titled each of his orations against King Philip of Macedon a Philippic, as did Cicero his speeches against Mark Antony, and thus began a time-honored tradition. The music of this movement includes frequent changes of both regular and irregular meters and repetitions of musical motives and figures. Rondo form enhances the representation of a speaker driving home one principal subject.
