The subtitle of the work is Homage a Jean Titelouse. Titelouse was a great contrapuntist - organ composer of the mid 17th century. This work in in homage to him, and employs some of his contrapuntal language. The work is cast in three main parts -I, a fantasia, based on two broadly contrasting themes, II a ricercar, using the them of In Nomine and III, a final quiet statement, which is a quote of the In Nomine of John Taverner.

Satie also found inspiration in Greek antiquity and French literature, most notably his Socrate. Jean Racine's (1639-1699) tragedy Andromaque (1667) inspired these duets. Racine took his characters from Greek and Roman stories and adapted or created new situations for them in accordance with baroque fascination with neo-classicism in literature. Andromaque is a love quadrangle in which all who love die or go insane. Only the prisoner-queen Andromaque, who is incapable of love, survives. Andromaque, icy cold, rejects amorous advances from her captor Phyrrus. She plots her survival, trying desperately to save her infant son Astyanax from the Greek ambassador Oreste who would have her Trojan line finished off for good. The baby Astyanax sleeps silently, unaware of the deadly drama surrounding him. Does he nap peacefully? Or does he dream, like his mother, of revenge for the death of his conquered father, the great Trojan warrior king Hector? Phyrrus awkwardly tries to sweet-talk his captive Andromaque into marriage. She rejects him until he becomes furious and threatens to kill her son Astyanax unless she agrees to wed. Phyrrus alternates between threats and cajoling. Hermione loves Phyrrus, who decides to marry Andromaque instead. She rejects her own suitor Oreste, until she vengefully has him kill Phyrrus. Oreste does her bidding, only to be rewarded by a final rejection. She accuses Oreste of being a murderous monster. When Hermione sees the body of Phyrrus, she kills herself. The Greek soldier and ambassador Oreste sailed to Epire to persuade King Phyrrus to kill or hand over the infant Astyanax, last of the line of Troy. Oreste is torn between duty and love for usury Hermione. Her broken promises and final rejection affect him profoundly. Oreste goes insane upon learning of her death.

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1308171). I have long wanted to compose an homage to Jean Sibelius. However, his music is copyright protected in the EU for another five years or so. Thus, I struggled with how to compose a work without any direct musical quotations, and yet which in some way captures the essence of his symphonic music. I had a breakthrough in recent weeks, and the result is an eleven-minute orchestral composition which manages to invoke his music without directly quoting it. The opening passage on which the piece is based invokes the opening of Symphony No. 6 without quoting it; also, my homage is in the key of A Minor whereas the symphony is in the key of D minor. The piece also invokes the orchestral colors of one of my other favorite pieces of Sibelius, The Swan of Tuonela. My composition is scored very closely to that one, but I ended up using two oboes; I never needed an English Horn, and I added two flutes to that scoring. Thus, the instrumentation is as follows: 2fl-2ob-1cl/bcl-2bn-4hn-3tbn-timp-bd-str; the duration is ca. 11:30. My homage also invokes the more youthful compositions of the great master, and of course features his biggest personal influence, the sounds of nature. Sibelius was a master of musical forms. He managed to create entirely original forms such as the one for Symphony No. 7. While I do not pretend to be in his league in any way, I did manage to compose a work in a four-part form, which is unusual, and not the least of which for me. The piece contains all kinds of indirect references to the music of Sibelius through the use of motifs, melodies, harmonies, ornamentation, and orchestration.While not the most original piece of music I have ever composed (that would be The City In the Sea: Choral Tone Poem), my Homage to Sibelius is among the most subtle of my works in that it contains a good deal of variation technique, and a lot of attention to detail. Like my Homage to Vaughan Williams for string orchestra, the idea was not to break new stylistic ground, but rather to pay homage to the ground broken by the master. More so than anything, my Homage to Sibelius invokes how the symphonic music of Sibelius makes me feel when I am listening to it. This guitar sonata is a four-movement work in open D tuning throughout. The performance time is between 17 to 18 minutes. I worked on this sonata from 2016 through 2019 as an homage to Blind Willie Johnson. The movements are as follows.I. Andante (a fugue in triple counterpoint)II. ScherzoIII. Largo trionfante (a ragtime sonata whose recapitulation leads seamlessly into)IV. Variations on Restoration from William Walker's Southern HarmonyThe work is written in cumulative setting after the model of Charles Ives but in a Haydnesque homage to not just Blind Willie Johnson but also with musical tributes to Stevie Wonder, Bach (the triple counterpoint), Louis Armstrong and Lil Harden. The fourth movement is a bravura set of variations on the shape note hymn Restoration that is the foundation of the entire sonata, using bottleneck technique throughout as an homage to Blind Willie Johnson.Owing to the use of bottleneck technique and the open D tuning throughout this is a pretty tough sonata to play but it's fun to play and I've filmed myself playing through it to demonstrate its practicality in performance.

Fourth Symphony in E flat major Homage to Beethoven (2003, revised 2021), a Neo-Classical symphony based on Beethoven's sketches for his Tenth Symphony, like a speculative reconstruction. In 1822-1827, the fascinating Tenth Symphony (Biamonti 838) was one of Beethoven’s relatively advanced projects, but still it was at the beginning of its elaboration. The material is not quite abundant, and many secondary features in the concept sketches could have been modified, according to his working habits, should he have lived a few years more. For a true reconstruction, the sketches are too scarce, but they are also too good to be left aside and very stimulating for a composer, especially for one whose formation is indebted to Beethoven and who is willing to pay him homage. I have chosen a Neo-Classical idiom, an approach analogous to Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss (after Tchaikovsky). For such a work, the thorough study of fundamental articles on Beethoven’s projects and sketches (by Barry Cooper, Sieghard Brandenburg, Robert Winter, Martin Staehelin, Nicholas Cook, and Lewis Lockwood) was a necessity. Then, in 2021, the symphony was heavily revised, mainly to make it terser and truer to the sketches and to Classical practices For this symphony, all the thematic material is Beethoven’s, and also the general outline, as much as the latter could be inferred from his sketches. In its revised version, I made use only of the sketches clearly identifiable as intended for the Tenth Symphony and dating from 1822 and later years (most of the themes of its corresponding movements), but also of a few other sketches, most of them contemporary or relatable, unused or intended for other compositions: in the continuation to the second subject group in the first movement, in the second strains of the Presto and of its Trio, and in the transitions and the episodes in the Finale. The symphony has 4 movements and is scored for a normal concert orchestra, including 3 trombones. The revised version makes use also of a contrabassoon, to support the double basses and suggesting a stronger presence of the winds like in the larger scale concerts in the Classical era (usually with doubled winds).Total duration: 34 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 audio clip is a recording of the first movement (Andante-Allegro-Andante).

I started composing this single-movement sonata for guitar on October 29, 2016 and completed it on May 11, 2018. As the title says, this is an homage to Stevie Wonder, one of my musical heroes. This is a roughly 12-minute single-movement that has original themes inspired by the chord changes from the synth break to Stevie Wonder's Living for the City.  The work is primarly in standard tuning but the performer must switch to the tuning E flat, A, D, G, B flat, E flat in the final page. The sonata may be played on classical, electric or acoustic guitar. Although this is not indicated in the published score between measures 236 and 260 you can introduce embellishments and four-measure cadenzas. I suggest inserted cadenzas between measures 255 and 256 as well as between measures 259 and 260.Â

I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. I composed Guitar Sonata No. 6 in A major as an homage to Scott Joplin for the centennial of his death. It is a fully traditional sonata form but composed entirely from original ragtime themes. The piece may be played with or without swing and has a few places where the performer can improvise or compose interludes or vary the first theme within the first structural repeat of the sonata. Performance time is roughly 7 minutes (give or take cadenzas, etc) and is five pages long.
