With a running time of just over two and a half minutes, this lively piece is sure to please performers and audiences alike. The work was first performed at a concert in Ben’s Theater Jomtien by the Salaya Quartet, a distinguished group of musicians who at the time were section leaders in the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. The first performance of the original oboe version of this work was given by Cooper Wright (oboe); Inga Causa (violin); Dr Danny Keasler (viola) and Martin Szawelski (cello). Although originally conceived as an encore piece, this lively work will enliven any concert program. It’s written in G major with two bright and rhythmic outer sections and a more reflective middle section that briefly gives the melody to the cello. The oboe part requires an experienced player but it is not especially challenging in terms of range. The cello part remains in the bass clef throughout. The work is also available scored for flute and string trio. The score has seven pages and the four instrumental parts have three pages each, with slightly enlarged print to facilitate performance. The score and parts are contained music in a single 20-page PDF file. Dr Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music and followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service. He has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to havebeen a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for hisinstrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academicresearch but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present partita, (transcribed in A minor for guitar), was discovered early in this research and it is well known and loved amongstguitarist and lute players of today because of its ease in performance, but at the same timemaintaining a high compositional standard in terms of well-constructed movements incontrapuntal two-part writing.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the opticalresult rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Instrumentalists have tomake their own fingering and choice of position decisions and in most cases they prefer it. My general suggestion for this partita is that open strings should be preferred whenever it is possible, as for example in the second half of the last movement where notes B and E are always sustainedas open strings in the upper part (indicated by the ties) and the required technique and sound result is that of an arpeggio rather than a scalic passage.Although here we have only a five movement partita and it is very easy to navigate from page to page, my usual procedure, followed for larger collections, is to give a thematic index in the beginning of the volume, with the first few bars of every piece given as photographs. If an electronic pad rather than printed music is used to play the music from these PDF archives, these photographs are clickable active links leading strait to the piece concerned, and the header of the page of any piece is another active link leading back to the index. External links to internet sources for further information on the pieces, live performances, etc may be added if considered of particular interest.

Published by Upstream Music (A0.933521). Both the Adagio molto (Hess 40) and the unfinished, originally intended Fugue date from November, 1817. It was the publisher Tobias Haslinger who requested a prelude and fugue for a publication in line with works published earlier. Beethoven completed the prelude but with the fugue he stopped after merely four bars of music. The short original fugue theme was later inserted into the second part (Molto vivace) of the Ninth Symphony (Opus 125).The prelude (Beethoven did not give any time indication) starts with 37 bars of solemn music followed by 12 bars Allegro. In terms of form, rhythm, and key, this material shows great similarity to the Molto vivace from Opus 125 referred to above. The present version has been arranged for a string orchestra instead of for a string quintet, thus being the first publication which enables it to be performed in its entirety. In order to balance the foundation, I opted for introducing a contrabass part, which largely follows the cello part composed by Beethoven. As regards the phrasing, dynamics, and rests as well as the time indication, this publication follows those in Willy Hess’ publication. So the prescribed time ‘Adagio molto’ is not that of Beethoven himself.The arguments to link the Maestoso to the Fugue in D major (Opus 137) published later are multiple. In the first place, the Fugue also dates from 1817. Secondly, the key is the same as is the number of instruments for a string quintet with two separate alto parts. Not only does the original fugue theme start at the tone a, but the timing too is the same, that is 3/8. So it seems reasonable to assume that Beethoven intended both works as a couple.The abnormal rhythmics of the bars 38 up to and including 49 is remarkable. I have preserved it because the part has been authentically composed by Beethoven, while it did not seem logical to me to have it immediately followed by the Fugue completed by myself. I have composed a number of bars of music based on the beginning of the prelude by way of a smooth transition.In the Fugue, I closely adhere to Beethoven, at the same time introducing a contrabass part here as well, so as to support the cello. At a number of places in the score, Beethoven recorded neither music nor rests. This refers to the bars 5 (second viola and cello), 11, 12, 25 and 26 (first and second violins), 39 to 41 (all parts), 43 and 44 (all parts except the first violin), 45 (first viola) and finally 45 and 46 (second violin). As in Willy Hess’ publication, I have just inserted rests here.

A piano solo version of this was performed Oct. 27, 2019, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, by the music collective Sacred & Secular before the start of the service. One congregation member, who also is a member of Sacred & Secular, was moved to tears. In terms of technical proficiency, For a Synagogue In Pittsburgh is an excellent fit for intermediate students/players and would fit best in recitals and/or concerts that include two or three other introspective-sounding pieces. More famous examples would include Debussy's Clair de Lune and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.Plans are underway to expand this ensemble arrangement (string quartet, offered with score and parts) to include an SATB vocal arrangement and make it available on Mo-Mutt Music's Sheet Music Plus page.

Over 10 years later, Grieg selected certain elements from this work, organising these into two orchestral suites. The Death of Åse features in the first suite, Op. 46, along with Morning, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Åse is the mother of Peer Gynt. When her son absconds with the daughter of an affluent local farmer, Åse sacrifices everything to pay the penalties on his behalf and, left destitute, dies of poverty and illness. Cheery stuff!Although fairly straightforward in terms of notes and rhythms, this piece has been classed as 'intermediate' as it requires good intonation and ensemble skills to perform effectively.

My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for two siblings, 10 and 12 at the time! I would consider them both early intermediate, easily playing at Elementary IV NFMC class. This piece was quite the challenge at first. There are some tricky sections with unison runs. Playing cleanly is important here. Pedal should not be used very much except were notated. A definite crowd pleaser. (If you listen to the video, those are my students performing at an Honors Recital—very proud of them!) Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488223). Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) was one of the greatest pianists of his time and a composer of exceptional abilities. Ries studied pianoforte (but not composition) with Beethoven in Vienna and the two men remained on cordial terms for the rest of their lives. In the last year of his life Ries co-wrote a book of Beethoven reminiscences that remain one of the most valuable sources of information about his life and character. The place and date of composition of the Sonate Sentimentale is uncertain in spite of the apparently conclusive evidence to the contrary: Ries's autograph score is dated 'Godesberg 1814' but by this time Ries was living in London. The discrepancy is probably due to the fact that Ries added the date to this manuscript, as he did to many others, in the 1820s. One of the most intriguing aspects of this work is the difference between Ries's original conception and the work as it appeared in its first published edition in 1834. The extent of the changes points to a substantial authorial revision of the work made prior to publication rather than a garbled transmission of the original text. Among the most striking of these changes is the inclusion of a brief introduction to the first movement; but other passages are extensively rewritten and in some instances lengthened by the inclusion of additional material. As with all Ries's works for flute, the Sonate Sentimentale is exceptionally well written for the instrument and yet perhaps even more impressive is the way in which Ries balances the musical texture and exploits the full potential of both the flute and piano. The beautiful work is arguably the most impressive flute sonata of the early 19th century. Allan Badley.

The work moves from section to section and, as the title suggests, it moves in a round-about way.. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo.
