The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

This Quick-Step piece was recorded by Judy Garland in 1943 by Decca Records on her Second Souvenir album.The quickstep is a light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events. Quickstep was developed in the 1920s in New York City and was first danced by Caribbean and African dancers. Its origins are in combination of slow foxtrot combined with the Charleston, a dance which was one of the precursors to what today is called swing dancing.This dance gradually evolved into a very dynamic one with much movement on the dance floor, with many advanced patterns including hops, runs, quick steps with much momentum, and rotation. The tempo of quickstep dance is rather brisk, as it was developed to ragtime era jazz music, which is fast-paced when compared to other dance music.The quickstep is elegant like the foxtrot and should be smooth and glamorous. The dancers should appear to be very light on their feet. It is very energetic and form-intensive. The quickstep is danced to 4/4 music of 48-52 measures per minute.

Easy Sailing for Piano was a composition I wrote a few months into the corona-virus pandemic. My dad talked to me about writing piano music like this and almost immediately the idea for this composition popped into my head. I've created maybe over twenty compositions so far in my life, and this was the first one where I knew exactly how it was going to sound from the moment I got the idea. With all the other pieces, I started out with a small idea and grew from there. But as I said, with Easy Sailing for Piano, I knew exactly how the piece would go. Well... There is one thing that's different. Originally, I wanted Easy Sailing for Piano to be a lot longer. The idea was to increase in difficulty the further into the music you went. The problem with that idea was that I also wanted this to be an easy song to learn. It was clear that if I continued the composition, I was going to make it unsuitable for beginners to play. The parts that survived sound really good though. Easy Sailing for Piano should be pleasant to listen to and play. Easy Sailing for Piano is technically a theme and variations. If you don't know, a theme and variations is a musical form. It starts with a melody that establishes the mood of the composition, and the variations basically play around with that theme. Now this piece only has the theme and the first variation. I'm pretty sure you need more than one variation for it to officially be a theme and variations. But, I don't think that matters too much since it's for beginners and not advanced students. In the future, I might write a sequal to this composition. I think I might call it Easy Sailing for Piano 2, or something along those lines. It will have a theme that's similar to this video's, but it will be much, much longer. If you purchase the sheet music for Easy Sailing for Piano, I hope you enjoy it! This is supposed to be a pleasant song to listen to and perform.

Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. The death of a pet is certainly one the most difficult things that pet lovers experience. Pets offer us companionship, affection and healing, but their relatively short lifespan means that we will experience this loss many times in our lives. Many of us take comfort in the idea of a rainbow bridge that our pets cross when they die, and that we too will cross to be united with our pets. This song expresses the grief that we experience with the death of a pet, but also the hope that we will be reunited with them one day. This version of the song is a backing track for a soloist. I say that withquotes because in my research I realized that a lot of people tell different stories. This is mainly because back when Christianity was growing,the Christians saw anything that wasn't Christian as pagan, so they got rid of it all. So that is why Greek, Roman, and Norse religions faded into mythologies, and all that was left was passed around in folk tales. And also because Marvel tells a very different tale of the mythology than the research I have collected and I want people to know these stories. Now moving passed the history lesson and into the music. This is interesting for me because this is the biggest original piece that I've ever made. This is going to be a multimovement piece, and this is the 1st movement, Ginnungagap, the endless void. This movement describes The Void, and the two lands of Fire(Muspelheim) and Ice(Niflhiem).Starting with The Void, it describes the blackness, and I use the absence of instruments to give this feeling, but however to give2 of the other themes to foreshadow it. It moves into this wild cascading theme for the Niflheim theme to describe the cold cascading environment of the world.After that it slows into a dark and ominous theme for Muspelheim(Surtr's Destiny). This was an interesting part to make because in mythology, Surtr, also referred to as Surt, is the fabled fire giant who destroys Asgard. No one knows where hecomes from, but from the moment of his creation, he knew of his destiny to destroy Asgard so he spent all of his time forging his sword to burrow into Asgard. I used a break drum to symbolize a hammer hitting an anvil to forge a sword, a lingering sound of Surtr's destiny.After this, I brought both themes together to resemble The Clash of the two worlds to create the Norse universe.The final theme in this first movement is entitled I am Ymir. In myhtology, Ymir is the father of everything. Created from the clash, he gave creation to all the gods, humans, giants, elves, and dwarves. This final theme takes Surtr's theme and flipsit to be mo.

Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser.The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency.This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!
