Petros Shoujounian, Armenian/Canadian composer has written Twelve Duos for Tubas based on the folksong collection of the Armenian priest Komitas, known as the founder of the Armenian national school of music and one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology. Below are comments from the composer about his inspiration in writing these Twelve Duos for Tubas. My interest in the collected works of Komitas's ethnographical songs was aroused when I was introduced to Bela Bartok's similar works followed by Alan Hovhaness's huge creative world. Bartok completed his project having at his disposal a large collection of ethnographic music, while Hovhannes studied the wealth of Komitas's music with great interest. It is difficult to say to what extent the Armenian underpinning of Hovhannes's works are nurtured by Komitas's musical world, but his classical interpretation of the Armenian ethnographical music created a huge interest in the listener. Needless to say, there is also Aram Katchaturian's legacy, which at its core has the ardent presence of the Armenian spirit, nurtured by Komitas's very existence. Komitas has left a collection of about 3,000 cleaned versions of ethnographic song and dance pieces, of which 1,700 has reaches us, about 400 of which have been activated. I believe that in those beautiful musical fragments reside the power to be revived, once we enrich them with colorful musical instruments and unbounded polyphonic imagination. This is the motivation behind my own work and these Twelve Duos for Tubas: to make the essence of our ethnographic music accessible through Komitas. These Twelve Duos are appropriate for advanced performers and may be performed on C Tuba, F Tuba and the larger B-flat Bass Tubas.

Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. She paints musical portraits of the things that bring meaning to life: relationship to living things, emotional healing, discovering what matters most and honoring that as best we are able. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside. The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

Ponce traveled to Aguascalientes on vacation and spent an evening looking at the starry night. This inspired him to compose the words and music for the song, Estrellita (Star of Love/Little Star/Petit Astre/Stellina). The text ‘Star from far away, you know about my love and my suffering…’ has been speculated by many that these lyrics are Ponce’s sentimental expressions for his beloved Mexico as a little star… ‘Because I cannot live without his love.’ Or, it is widely held that the lovely melody of Estrellita came to Ponce in a moment of inspiration while spending a romantic evening with his wife… either scenario could be true. In 1923 violinist Jascha Heifetz was in Mexico City and realized he didn’t have any work by a Mexican composer on his program. While in a café, he heard a local musician sing the popular song Estrellita and noted its title on a napkin. Estrellita became one of his favorite encore songs ever since. Scored for solo violin, tenor and piano this trio runs 2:59.
