Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.OMS142). 9 x 12 in inches.The Keweenaw Peninsula is located in the northwestern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is surrounded by Lake Superior on the west, north and east sides. From the late 1800's through the early 1960's copper was mined there. There are still remnants of multiple mines and hoists scattered about the hilly country side. This area can get around 180 of snow each year and winters can be long yet beautiful. There are waterfalls scattered in the hilly country side that are quite beautiful in the spring and summer.I attended Michigan Technological University from 2002-2006 which is located in Houghton, Michigan. Houghton is called the Gateway to the Keweenaw. I composed this piece to paint a picture of the Keweenaw with its waterfalls, hilly country, the sun rising and setting over Lake Superior, and the winter splendor. Because many people on the Keweenaw Peninsula are of Finnish descent, I incorporated the Finnish National Anthem into the melodic material.

It was first performed at the Dawn Service on the Gallipoli Peninsula by a combined choir of students from St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows' School in 2015. This atmospheric piece creates a haunting image of lives lost and dreams shattered, ultimately leaving us with a message of hope that peace will be our inheritance. This arrangement is for SATB choir and will work well with both changed and unchanged voices. There is some flexibility in the accompaniment, allowing for strings or rhythm section only to accompany the choir, or both!

Dedicated to pianist Eric Xi Xin Liang, PIANO SONATA by American composer Aaron Robinson is a programmatic work on a monumental scale. Composed in four movements representing four areas of Maine: Machigonne (Portland), Down East, Malaga Island and Katahdin, each paints a detailed portrait of a specific time and place in the State’s history. Its compositional structure draws heavily on the sights and sounds associated with each region while weaving original themes throughout. Mimesis is used to represent the native calls of the indigenous birds found within the state, such as the phoebe, bobolink and the pileated woodpecker; while hymns, songs and sea shanties are incorporated to represent various time periods. Movement I - MACHIGONNE - Native Americans originally named what is today the Portland peninsula of Maine “Machigonne”, which translates “Great Neck”. The movement quotes several sacred and ritual songs of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine. The struggle between centuries of habitation by the native peoples of the area is represented by the arrival of early settlers and illustrated by juxtaposing hymn tunes and dance music of the past eras.Movement II - DOWN EAST - is the eastern coastal area of the state closely associated with the French territory of Acadia. Replete with historic sea shanties and tunes, the sound of tolling ship and buoy bells, lighthouse fog horns, and ocean winds are intertwined to create a high-spirited journey which culminates in the familiar Shaker tune from Alfred, Maine.Movement III - MALAGA ISLAND - Today an uninhabited reserve, Malaga Island was once the home to an interracial community dating from the 1860s to 1911, when its residents were forcibly evicted by the State. The opening theme represents the remnants of the island in its present state; haunted by the memories and unsettling muted solitude of the past and its historical injustice. A peaceful hymn depicting simpler times becomes slowly unraveled, erupting in a traumatic chaos that is never resolved. A ghostly refrain can be heard in the distance as the movement concludes.Movement IV - KATAHDIN - Mount Katahdin (“Catahdrin”), called “Great Mountain” by the Penobscot Native Americans, is located within the Northeast Piscataquis County, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The grandeur of its majesty is portrayed by the original themes depicting epic rising and falling passages traversing over centuries. Native Americans believed the mountain to be the home of the storm god Pamola (a place to be avoided), which is characterized by ever-changing major and minor keys within the often times turbulent motifs. The sonata ends in a tonal key: bringing the atonality and discordant change of the work and its representation as a whole to a final resolve.PIANO SONATA lasts approximately 25 minutes.

Saetas are religious songs that are performed at Easter (Semana Santa).5.There are many hundreds of versions of the old folk tale Gerineldo, telling the story of love between a Queen and her page boy. This Spanish/Jewish version is over 500 years old, from the time when the Moors ruled over much of the Iberian Peninsula.6.Villancico Asturiano is a traditional Christmas carol from Asturias, combined with a setting of a Christmas poem written in the seventeenth century by Robert Herrick for King Charles II of England.7.The lyrics from La Tarara are drawn from the poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Federico Lorca, who based his poem on a traditional children´s playground song. La Tarara is a mystical woman who dances around the countryside. The music in this version is in the style of a Tanguillo – a type of flamenco dance from Cadiz.

Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774723). Brisbane Ladies, sometimes known as Augathella Station, is an Australian folk song based on an English naval song titled Spanish Ladies. The song probably dates from the time of the War of the First Coalition (1793-96) when the Royal Navy carried supplies to Spain in support of that country’s resistance to revolutionary France. It then probably gained further popularity during the later Peninsular War when British soldiers were transported to Spain to assist rebels fighting against the French occupation by the forces of Napoleon.Spanish Ladies is a tale of British naval personnel sailing north from Spain and along the English Channel to their home port. Due to its popularity, several variants of Spanish Ladies later appeared in various parts of the world. American whalers sang a version called Yankee Whalermen. In Newfoundland it appeared as We’ll Rant and We’ll Roar. Special lyrics were written to the tune for the Bluenose, a famous Canadian sailing ship plying out of Nova Scotia. In Australia, around 1880, another set of lyrics appeared, written by Saul Mendelsohn who was a storekeeper in the small Queensland town of Nanango. Brisbane Ladies tells about the drovers who bring the herds of cattle overland from western Queensland to the markets in Brisbane. There the drovers spend most of their money and time with the ladies before setting out for home in search of the next herd of cattle for market. The places mentioned in Brisbane Ladies are mostly small towns along the stock route that stretched some 750 kilometres north-west of Brisbane towards the small town of Augathella, on the banks of the Warrego River. Augathella, at that time, marked the convergence of three major bullock tracks from Morven, Tambo and Charleville.

The artwork is a haphazard abstract representation of the coastal town of Porthleven, near Helston, on the fringe of the Lizard Peninsula. The painting depicts the town's unusual feature of three inter-connected harbours, as well as a cross on a tower, which likely refers to the church. The work is formed in three sections, as a relation to the three harbours. It explores the notion of bell-tones, and even of change-ringing, in reference to the aforementioned church bell tower. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for more advanced pianists, including students and professionals. The peninsula at Gallipoli in Turkey is now marked with cemeteries; particularly striking are the graves of Australian and New Zealand infantry, which are marked with epitaphs provided by the families of the fallen. Five of these epitaphs have been included in the text for “Waves of Gallipoli,†along with lines from poet Leon Gellert, a Gallipoli veteran. In the music we can hear the undulating of the Aegean Sea lapping the coastline of Gallipoli, sad melismas complement the idea of “moaning;†following the epitaphs, a single voice sounds the bugle call, “The Last Post,†which is sounded at ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corp) Day dawn services each year, memorializing the soldiers who fell at Gallipoli.
