"Jingle Bells" was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title "One Horse Open Sleigh" in the fall of 1857. Interestingly, the piece had no connection to Christmas originally and its association with the holiday season only began decades after it was first performed by performer Johnny Pell in Ordway Hall on September 16, 1857. Many sources hint a the possibility that "Jingle Bells" was originally written to be sung by a Sunday school choir.
