This Brass Quintet honors the Pooka, the imaginary ( ? ) creature best known as a giant rabbit in the movie Harvey. The Pooka is actually from Irish folklore along with Leprechauns and other creatures best seen after imbibing several drinks, and can be either large or small depending on the amount you drink.In this depiction the Pooka announces himself as a lively 3-note melody in the 1st trumpet. This theme is then interspersed with other jocular tunes featuring all the other instruments. This gives us a picture of a carefree, happy-go-lucky fellow. The Pooka Polka should liven up any concert.

Translated from Italian, the title of this work (“Scherzo Serioâ€) means “a serious joke.†The jocular nature resulting from the multi-meter and irregular meter, punctuated by strong jabs of sound, makes it impossible to tap one’s foot to the beat upon first hearing. The various sections of the work alternate between atonality and tertian harmony. As a whole it presents a clear three-part organization. This particularly fun and challenging two-minute brass quintet was completed in 2009 and premiered by the Faculty Brass Quintet from the University of Texas at San Antonio. MSgt Jim Bartelt (USAF, Retired) composed the majority of the percussion part when Gateway Brass from the USAF Band of the West toured with this piece in 2012.

Commentators have opined that the piece's purpose is satirical – that [its] harmonic and rhythmic gaffes serve to parody the work of incompetent composers – though Mozart himself is not known to have revealed his actual intentions.The title A Musical Joke might be a poor rendering of the German original: Spaß does not necessarily connote the jocular, for which the word Scherzwould more likely be used. In Fritz Spiegl's view, a more accurate translation would be Some Musical Fun. Capriccio by Andrey Chekalin, presented in the form of a cycle of four parts, tells of a fictional hero. In the first part sounds a dark theme, personifying rock. The second part is a bagatel, the main theme, accompanied by percussion, conveys a comical obsession. The middle section is mysterious, there is no topic at all in it, only the background. The third part again returns to the image of the protagonist. The solo of the bass clarinet tells of loneliness and irresistible longing. The cycle ends with a jocular theme resembling a ditty. In this part there is no trace of past suffering. Life goes on.
