Philips: Cosi moriro (So will I die)Peter Philips, the composer, was born in 1560 or 1561 and died in 1628. He was an English composer, organist, and Catholic priest exiled to Flanders. Philips was known for his keyboard virtuosity and transcribing or arranging Italian motets and madrigals for his instruments. He composed a large number of sacred choral works, with his surviving motets numbering in the hundreds. The piece is included in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, a primary source of keyboard music from the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods in England. The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book contains over 300 pieces for keyboard, including works by William Byrd, John Bull, and Giles Farnaby, among others. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. There is nothing past an eighth note---no hemidemiquavers--..-The Heritage Series is written to be easy to play and easy to listen to. They all have familiar tunes, sound full, have easy ranges and involve nothing more complicated than an eight note. The object is to produce music and not to display technique. The harmonies, lines and logical counterpoints make these arrangements play well with modest technique. Markings are at minimum to keep things simple. String Bass and Piano must be used to make these arrangements work. The optional acoustic guitar (NOT ELECTRIC) will help the rhythm section. Electric bass could be substituted. If you use an electric bass player, sometimes they can be converted to an upright bass or cello player player( –a devious but legal way to get more players in your school orchestra). There is a 3rd Violin part that is really a treble clef viola part if you have no viola players, or to bolster what you have.

It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere.
