It can be suited ideally in any setting.Program Note“Dreams†is a suite for symphony orchestra in three movements. The work was kindly commissioned by Dr. Luis VÃquez, conductor of the University of Rhode Island’s Symphony Orchestra and to whom this work is being dedicated alongside with his wife Melissa. The titles of the movements come from either an specific dream, or other topics about dreaming that I discovered in the process of writing the work. I. Cherry trees in the morningNature has always inspired me. Every year during spring my family has the tradition to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to experience the cherry blossoms. I usually do not remember many of my dreams but in this particular dream I was in Japan under an esplanade of cherry trees. I remember how amazed I feel and is for sure one of my most memorable dreams. II. DreamcatcherWhile I was writing the initial ideas of for the work I came across a Journal that explored how the use of a particular chord helped reduce nightmares in patients suffering from nightmare disorders. In the study, patients were exposed to the chord C69 (A C Major with the added 6th and 9th) during therapeutic sessions. This chord is used at the beginning of the movement as it moves to explore different sonorities. In this movement you might be able to hear a representation of the “heartbeat†played by the bass drum and timpani, then a more “stressful†section will come to represent a nightmare followed again by another repetition of the C69 chord. If you feel relaxed during the performance, it is on purpose! III. A Dance in the desertDreams, in my case, are usually a mix of different non-related things. For the final movement, I decided to use that idea. I started this dance with a “oriental†style and them throughout the middle of the movement I moved it to a waltz that was influenced by my grandfather. He used to have a small orchestra and he used to play waltzes during events and private parties.I hope the music takes you through a journey of musical emotions.Juan Guerra González

The work has 3 short movements and is dedicated to Dr. Esteban Barquero, a conductor and dear friend from Costa Rica. The first movement “Bajo la lluvia†(Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain.“Rocio†(Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives.The third movement “Tempestad†(Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc†As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.†The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. Every single morning when my wife wakes up, our cat Zeus comes to her and starts his massage routine (yes, we have a cat that does massages.) When he’s in the middle of his routine he always purrs, as many cats do. One day he changed the time of his routine and instead of doing in in the morning, he came to our bed when we were almost sleeping. When he started purring, I was impressed by the sense of relaxation I was getting from that sound and I decided to use it in my next composition.I came across an investigation of Dr. Karen Mccomb, a professor at the University of Sussex, London who also appeared on the documentary The Lion in your Living Room (available at Netflix) According to Dr. Mccomb, cats have two different types of purrs, the first type is for when our feline friends want something from us (solicitation purr) and the other one when they’re just relaxing (non-solicitation purr). I divided the piece into two movements, accompanied by a prerecorded tape. Visit www.juancarlosguerra.com to learn more about the piece.The first movement (Solicitation Purr) is for when cats are demanding for action, the saxophone creates effects while the tape accentuates this idea. Multiple cats joined this movement with their particular meows. The second movement (Non-solicitation Purr) is more relaxing and lyric for the soloist.

Published by Juan Carlos Guerra Gonzalez (A0.1208333). “Munamiktia†(To marry) is based on the six sones from “Los Chapetones†(a folkloric dance from Panchimalco, El Salvador). “Los Chapetones†is a satiric dance portraying the social constructs of the Colonial time. It represents a wedding between Doña Lucrecia de Castilla and Don Tomás Rainer with the intention of making an alliance between Turkey and Spain. The investigation of this dance and its original music was made possible thanks to Aracely Sánchez (cultural researcher), Marcial Gudiel (folkloric dance researcher), and Concepción Clará de Guevara (anthropologist) for the creation of the work “Panchimalco†in 1982 work that was commissioned by the National Dance School of El Salvador “Morena Celariéâ€. The editors of the “Diccionario de la Música Española e Hispanoamericana†(Dictionary of Spanish and Hispanic Music) found this dance was unique in its genre in America and the Caribbean making “Los Chapetones†something exclusive from El Salvador. For this work, a part of each one of the sones is transformed in its rhythm or intervals to put them in melodies or in lines for the bass that have been harmonized in a different way while interacting with themes created especially for this work. The title, which in Nahuat means to marry, also serves as a reference to the union between the traditional themes used and the composer’s own musical language. Munamiktia (To marry) was written for the Salvadoran Composers Competition organized by the Pan American Symphony Orchestra (PASO) in Washington, DC. Given its originality, the Jury decided, after a long deliberation, to award it second place. The World Premiere will take place during their 21/22 season after PASO resumes activities due to COVID.* The actual World Premiere took place on March 25th, 2023 in Washington D.C. Nu Tal (Mi Tierra) or My Land, is one of my first orchestral works, commissioned by Dr. Irving Ramirez, associate conductor of the El Salvador’s Symphony Orchestra.At the beginning, the idea was to set four small sketches of different images from my country. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didn’t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely Sánchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the work’s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvador’s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. In my years as Assistant Conductor and Pianist for the National Choir in El Salvador, I enjoyed working and performing works like this one. I wrote this piece with tho main ideas in mind: first, to create with easy harmonies that could appeal to anybody and second to be able to create a work that can be performed in concert halls. Conductors and Choristers will find interesting (and challenging) rhythmic patterns that give freshness to the work and invites listeners to enjoy the music. Text is from the Bible. The work could be performed at churches and concert halls. The work is scored for SSAATTBB, Piano, and String Orchestra. This vocal score includes a piano reduction for rehearsal purposes. Here's the program note text in Spanish:Esta obra es mi humilde homenaje a la creación. La obra está escrita para coro mixto, piano y pequeña orquesta de cuerdas. En su sección inicial la obra presenta un patrón rÃtmico no convencional (métrica de 5/8) que de vez en cuando se intercala con métricas más tradicionales. La sección media es introducida por las cuerdas que de forma misteriosa nos introduce a una atmósfera de mayor contemplación. para luego regresar a la parte rÃtmica y recapitular el tema melódico inicial. El compositor escribe: En mis años como Pianista y director asistente del Coro Nacional de El Salvador disfruté mucho montar obras como la que usted disfrutará esta noche. Lo cierto es que el compositor ha querido buscar una obra que sea accesible y que tenga a la vez un carácter único, como las grandes maravillas de nuestro planeta y la naturaleza.
