Regarding his Sonata for Piano: Lasker, Mark Lackey writes: In composing a large new work for solo piano I wanted to write something original, something that felt honestly my own, that would still be appealing to pianists who love the great Romantic tradition. In particular, I found myself reflecting on Chopin and Liszt. Their works still stand as models, in a way, not only for having forged a pianistic style that is technically and sonically idiomatic, but for constructing beautifully balanced forms. I sought to express a similar formal balance, and a certain measure of technical virtuosity, with my own melodic sense and harmonic palette, my own underlying tonal logic, and with a beat that is at times obsessive, or irregular, or exuberant. The unusual subtitle 'Lasker' refers to the Lasker Summer Music Festival in rural North Carolina.

With Mark Lackey's Starscapes (2013, revised 2015) the pianist paints colorfully imagined alien worlds, now bold, now capricious, now stark and frozen, now delicate and vaporous. Harmony negotiates between the dodecaphony of classical serialism, the mystical stasis of minimalism, and a rich tonal romanticism, and melodies emerge that range from jagged to lyrical. A strong pulse propels the work throughout, even with occasional shifts in tempo and frequent changes of meter. With regard to register, the frequent use of the lowest notes and the highest notes on the instrument creates a sense of space, of the surreal. Technically the piece uses only conventional, on-the-keys playing, yet it makes considerable demands on the performer, making this an ideal work for a piano recital.
