Horace broke the sessions into two: a straight-ahead post-bop session with Ron Carter (whose chubby bass spews artifacts all over the place, in his best late-70s style) and Al Foster on drums and another, more commercial session featuring Bob Cranshaw and Bernard Purdie. Wade Marcus later added horn overdubs employing an absolute who's-who of LA session players. (Word quickly got out among the cognoscenti, and Silver 'n Brass became hugely popular among fellow musicians, much to Horace's delight.) Highlights of the disc include: the composer's propulsive piano solo on Dameron's Dance, young Bob Berg's paint-peeling tenor solos (especially riveting on Kissin' Cousins) and the driving flat 9th chords of Adjustment. The tune Barbara, a gorgeous waltz dedicated to Horace's then-wife, has become a latter-day standard of sorts (Amazon's MP3 store lists a whole bunch of covers). Sophisticated Hippie, a tribute to Duke Ellington, features quite a rhythm-section workout in its closing vamp: this session would be the only time that Horace and Bernard's paths would intersect. There are no vocals this time out, just fully arresting post-bop of a high order.

A relic of an age when radioactivity was glorified instead of feared, Radium Dance was written by Jean Schwartz in 1904, just 6 years after the Curies discovered radium. Only later would the toxic properties of radioactive materials be discovered. Very light and bouncy, this piece has the structure of a very airy circus march and would go well at the beginning or in the middle of a light concert program. Brahms's original work was for piano 4-hands. This brass quintet arrangement is a half step lower than Brahms's original piece, so it fits well into all of the brass parts. Higher brass all have ample rest and nothing is high or taxing. Also, the tempo changes have been written out, so there's no time wasted in rehearsal discussing how to handle tempo! Speaking of tempo...this piece is super fun to play for education shows. Kids can move along to the tempo and feel the abrupt changes throughout the piece.No playing headaches...just lots of fun for the musicians as well as the audience! In the late ‘50s just a handful of national TV shows in the US had a huge influence on the music and dance crazes of the time. Artists and dances came and went with dizzying speed. Chalypso was a short-lived craze in 1958 that combined the music of the new Rock’n’Roll with much-simplified steps borrowed from Cha Cha and Calypso; and no sooner had it caught on than it was itself supplanted by The Twist. Chocolate Chalypso is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, Chocolate Chalypso is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal. Joropo de Justina is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais or English Horn.This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Joropo which is the national and traditional music of Venezuela. The music and its accompanying dance comes from the central plains area and is also found over the border in parts of Colombia. The basic pulse of the Joropo is 3, but this is overlaid with complex cross-rhythms. The main instrument is the harp, along with cuatro and maracas as the only percussion instrument. In the modern era other instruments may join the ensemble, especially bass. This arrangement represents the song style of Joropo, with the vocal alternating with instrumental breaks.If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The many cross rhythms will provide a rhythmic challenge and there is little time to catch breath; following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Joropo de Justina has a performance time of around two minutes at full tempo.
