ISBN 9790570483808.Brass 4 All This piece was inspired by the brass section of the WNO, the importance of 'Music For All', and the need to make it accessible to children. A stately introduction opens the piece, with all the instruments passing the theme between them. This leads into a the main body of the piece, a bold, driving tune that contrasts with a more lyrical middle section before bursting out into fanfares of repeated notes to bring the music to a thrilling finish. Brass Neck The tuba is featured prominently in ths piece. The repeated motif drives the rhythm forward: 'Cry the tears for the freezing years. Just walk away' ... as the other players finally do. Marked Andantino and in Bb major the central section changes to Bb minor, where the horn and trombone carry the melody. This is then taken up be the second trumpet and the players stand as the music modulates back to Bb major. As each player finishes they sit down until the tuba is left to finish alone. Autumn Breeze A sultry September evening and a gentle breeze fans the last of the fading flowers. The family are gathered informally, and the music begins.... Marked Andante and with flowing descending quavers, the opening has interest for every player. The horn and then the trombone pick up the central theme, and this is then embellished by the trumpets. A gentle phrase marks the ending. Bankers Notes A letter drops on the mat. A final demand and the thought of the 'green paper rotting in their clutch' assails my mind. I write notes of a differnt kind! The opening is marked Vivace and is rather punchy, but soon settles into the main theme with driving rhythms throughout. The extended ending climaxes in rising staccato semiquavers for all.

Published by William Heath (A0.1142148). A Piano Trio, written for the Leeds University Union Music Society Winter Concert Series. Performed by the Hughes Trio featuring Christopher Hughes (Piano), Amy Howe (Violin), and Nikki Kemp (Cello) Programme Notes: This is a rather melodramatic piece that follows the Five Stages of Grief. I first sketched the piece for string quartet after an absolutely horrific interview at the Royal Northern College of Music. Feeling disheartened and dejected, I got home and messily scribbled on some manuscript paper An Elegy for Hopes and Dreams, and started writing this extremely over-dramatic and self-indulgent piece. I had abandoned this piece for an entire year before reviving it and writing the whole piece in just over a week and a half, now reimagined for Piano Trio. The piece starts with an atonal representation of grief before quickly moving into an upbeat Denial section which features a sort of fragile and manic sense of repression as a theme that initially sounds upbeat quickly unravels with whole-tone scales and chromatic movement. A representation of Anger is then seen with the whole trio playing the same melody with a jarring Bb in the harmony. The denial and anger sections repeat and regress before abruptly moving to a Bargaining section in which the original theme, ominously played in the lower piano and cello registers, is juxtaposed with a conjunct, major variation of the same theme in the violin. The Depression section takes the form of a cello solo as I find it to be one of the most emotive and expressive instruments and I take inspiration from Elgar's Cello Concerto, which I angstily listened to on the flight home from my aforementioned interview. A lilting and lamenting cello solo is contrasted with an atonal, aimless piano accompaniment which reflects the topic of depression. The bargaining theme reprises slightly with both strings performing the major variation before leading to the final climax. The Acceptance section sees the principal theme finally fully resolved in a major mode and with diatonic harmony. This is an expressive section as the whole trio plays the same melody with very simple yet emotive harmonic accompaniment underneath. Here the depression theme pairs with the principal theme coming to a final resolution. For individual parts for performance please contact owhcomposer@gmail.com.

Published by Personal Sun Music (A0.1025958). TWO EPISODES FROM DARK FOREST was originally conceived as a violin concerto. As I was writing the concerto, I was suddenly struck with the idea that I could distribute the virtuosic passages across four instruments instead of giving them all to just the violin, which would make for a great string quartet. There would be challenging passages, intensity and action in all of the parts, serious interactivity, and an enhanced narrative flow. The two episodes portrayed here were originally the third and fourth movements of the concerto. What resulted is something of a group showcase, a feature for the whole quartet, with a lot of fiery passages being passed around in quick succession. CHASE THROUGH THE FOREST is a headlong dash, quick and fun, with a sneaky fast rock feel, plenty of thrills, and a little bit of silent movie melodrama thrown in. In the middle of the movement an aggressive virtuosic duel breaks out, utilizing a lot of double-stops, pitting the two violins against one another, with some nasty interjections from the viola and cello. Following the abrupt and unexpected end of the chase scene, THE JOURNEY HOME arrives as wistful, lyrical and nostalgic, pure sentiment. It's an orchestrated song, with expressive, expansive and eventually intimate melodies.

Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1252822). “Pax Aeternam†was written in memory of renowned composer Barbara York, a fellow Canadian whom I was blessed enough to meet in person through my interaction with Matt Brown. Though we connected many years into my collaborative piano career, Matt is the first tubist I ever worked with, and Barbara’s music was my favorite part of getting introduced to the tuba literature. I was thrilled to learn how much she appreciated my playing of her work.“How Beautiful†was written in memory of Matt’s son Eli, who had a congenital condition that took his life a few hours after he was born. This flawless piece of music, poignant yet never maudlin, provided the title for a recording Matt and I did of all of Barbara’s tuba output. It also threw down the gauntlet when Danny Rowland approached me, at Matt’s suggestion, about composing a piece. Danny mentioned loving “How Beautiful,†and intending to commission Barbara, who’d recently passed on. I’d never written for the tuba before, but felt absolutely no pressure. That’s a lie.Like “How Beautiful,†“Pax Aeternam†is in a major key; in my case, I wanted to evoke wistfulness rather than despair. Barbara’s path was full of suffering, and having lost a brother to prolonged illness, I’ve come to embrace the idea that death can be a sweet relief from pain. I tried to capture some of Barbara’s spirit, particularly in the middle section, and chose triple meter to give the outer sections a bit of “swing.†I don’t recall Barbara as a somber person, and I wanted to paint a portrait of someone who moved through life with a smile. I didn’t know her as well as many, but I always found her kind, generous, and unpretentious. I hope that this musical portrait does her justice.I created a cello transcription for a performance with Sara Male, my partner in Duo Chiaroscuro. This seemed appropriate, since “Still Waters Running Deep,†one of our signature pieces, is a transcription of the slow movement of Barbara’s bassoon sonata, created at our request by the composer.

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra Composer: Graeme Culpepper Year: 2022 Program Notes: I feel that there is a time in every composer's life when they decide to write a concerto. Writing a concerto is as intriguing as it is difficult, as finding a balance between soloist and ensemble can prove to be a tricky task. What’s more, is deciding upon said ensemble. In today’s musical climate, the supporting ensemble can be a variety of different instrumental groups ranging from a chamber ensemble consisting of just a few musicians to a full symphony orchestra. In my humble opinion, with a genre as grand as a concerto, especially one involving the trumpet, I find it fitting to use the orchestra to accompany the trumpet. However, I opted to use an orchestra without a trumpet section to better support the soloist. This concerto’s first movement is built upon a couple of form-defining motifs. One in the form of an ostinato that is constantly changing meter, and another that is a simple short rhythmic cell that is able to fit in a variety of different textures throughout the movement. This movement also introduces the main motif throughout the entire concerto: a melodic sequence consisting of a minor third, a perfect fifth, followed by another minor third which resolves down by half step. This is the unifying motif of the entire concerto. I often ponder as to where the material in the second movement came from. After a long time of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that it is a subconscious expression of myself that comes from deep within. The second movement is perhaps the most vulnerable I have ever been with any of the music I have written, and the experience I personally have when listening to it is one that is very intimate. The third movement is a thrilling romp that is entirely built on the unifying motif mentioned earlier. The whole movement is essentially one big variation of itself. This movement is arguably the most technical and gives the trumpet soloist a great opportunity to show off their skill. This movement is also built upon a one-bar rhythmic ostinato so that the tension in this movement is never fully resolved until the very last bar, in hopes that this will keep the listener on their toes at all times. Though we connected many years into my collaborative piano career, Matt is the first tubist I ever worked with, and Barbara’s music was my favorite part of getting introduced to the tuba literature. I was thrilled to learn how much she appreciated my playing of her work.“How Beautiful†was written in memory of Matt’s son Eli, who had a congenital condition that took his life a few hours after he was born. This flawless piece of music, poignant yet never maudlin, provided the title for a recording Matt and I did of all of Barbara’s tuba output. It also threw down the gauntlet when Danny Rowland approached me, at Matt’s suggestion, about composing a piece. Danny mentioned loving “How Beautiful,†and intending to commission Barbara, who’d recently passed on. I’d never written for the tuba before, but felt absolutely no pressure. That’s a lie.Like “How Beautiful,†“Pax Aeternam†is in a major key; in my case, I wanted to evoke wistfulness rather than despair. Barbara’s path was full of suffering, and having lost a brother to prolonged illness, I’ve come to embrace the idea that death can be a sweet relief from pain. I tried to capture some of Barbara’s spirit, particularly in the middle section, and chose triple meter to give the outer sections a bit of “swing.†I don’t recall Barbara as a somber person, and I wanted to paint a portrait of someone who moved through life with a smile. I didn’t know her as well as many, but I always found her kind, generous, and unpretentious. I hope that this musical portrait does her justice.
