A fast song, powerful rhythm and easily recognizable melody makes this a great pleasure to play. When I originally arranged this, it was more difficult to play due to large jumps in the left hand that gave the song a little more depth. For the sake of playability I rewrote those jumps and reduced them while still maintaining most of the original drive. A selection of 44 Dance Consort pieces from publications dating from 1500 to 1620 in three, four or five part scores and fully chorded with lyricsRenaissance Dance music provides some of the most simple yet satisfying pieces to play in ensemble on a wide range of instruments.  They are suitable for recorders, modern strings, woodwinds or brass, or where available, reproductions of 16th century instruments, such as crumhorns, viols or shawms to name but a few.The 44 pieces that first  appeared in the publication Chording to the Dance Masters, are  presented in full score and with separate parts for each of the lines.  What is more, a number of the pieces have been re-edited to include their lyrics, should you wish to perform them vocally.  They represent some of the best known secular pieces of the Renaissance repertoire.What makes this Wold Meridian edition of these pieces different  from others is that they have been created to make performing them as accessible as possible.  Chords have been provided so that the piece can be played with just the melody line and a simple accompaniment.  It also means that keyboard players or fretted strings can join in with ensembles, giving extra sparkle to performances.Each piece can be heard in a video on YouTube with illustrations and historical background information.  Even more helpful for players who are less experienced in reading harmony lines, there is a YouTube video link featuring each part, where it is heard initially on its own with the chords, on repeats with the melody line added and finally together with all the parts in the whole ensemble.  If you have not had the pleasure of playing in consort with other people, you could not do better than start with these Wold Meridian editions.

It reached number one in both British and USA charts, and the top ten in many countries across the world.I really loved arranging this for string quartet and hope that it will give you pleasure to play. I have placed this piece within the Advanced category. In rehearsal with Capriccio Quartet and we tried it various tempi between70 and 84 bpm. Provided the energy is present in the playing it sounds just as good at a slower speed!Younger players could also tackle this song, which is in an easy key for strings. Although some of the rhythmic patterns appear difficult on the page, the key is to listen to the song and to do them by ear. There is not a lot of syncopation, and the on-beat semi quavers sound wonderful on strings. If they are played vigorously, with all the staccato and accents in the score, you can get away with a much slower speed altogether. As usual, the bowing is just a guide and the double stopping always includes an open string. On the rare occasion that the double stopping includes two notes without the open string, choose one of them that is not doubled in one of the other parts.Where there is a dynamic ‘p’ it is important to observe it. There are some very dissonant harmonies in this piece. Playing them loudly will sound a bit odd, but I tried leaving them out and the result was a drop in tension. My arrangement is a tribute to the old Fat's Waller recording. It's not copied from that rendition at all but I have arranged it as a stride piano piece and hope it exudes some of the joy that Mr Waller brought to it.I take it through three iterations in C, Db and D major, going up a semi-tone each time - so plenty of practice in trickier keys. I don't include dynamics in my notation nor fingering and pedalling as I prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist. You will never get two piano teachers to agree on these things. I like to give the reader the notes as simply as possible and leave the interpretation up to them. Similarly with voicings - some notes will be held longer instinctively by the pianist than others and do not need to be placed in separate voicings to make them difficult to read.The stride piano left hand often contains 10ths which can be too large a span for some pianists. The solution is to roll them or to just play them as a single bass note on the root of the chord or as an octave.This is a wonderfully joyous piece and I hope you get as much pleasure from learning and playing it as I did arranging it.

Level: Upper Intermediate - Early Advanced
This is an accessible arrangement of this great jazz standard - in a typical mainstream jazz piano style. On repeat there is a variation which is a quasi improvisation.
It fits nicely under the hand and includes phrasing, chord symbols, fingering and pedal suggestions.
The theme is mainly a 2-handed piano style - the chord voicings are spaced across both hands for a fuller sound.
In the variation, the bridge (bar 41), AA is more 'horn' style - lyrical right hand phrasing with left hand chordal accompaniment; often just the chord 'shell' - e.g. root and 7th. The B section here (bar 57) is 'stride' piano - left hand plays root/chord, right plays the melody harmonised in block chords.
Chord symbols are included to aid a better understanding of the harmony, and for pianists interested in embellishment or improvisation.
Designed to be a pleasure to play, this would be ideal as a recital or examination piece - or simply for leisure
