Mr. Vandall's love for his own students is manifest in his recognition that new pieces needed to be created for contemporary students. His students, like most others, were starved for something new and fresh. Mr. Vandall's compositions were a gift to them, and also to us!My compositions for Elementary and Intermediate piano students build on the ideas of composers including Robert Vandall, Catherine Rollin, Martha Mier, Dennis Alexander, E. L. Lancaster, and others. My unique presentation continues the spirit of Robert Vandall in an important way: not only are the sounds new for today's students, the means of communcation has also been updated to meet the needs of today's students. Having all of the fundamental technique on the page in terms understandable to elementary piano students enables students to spend more time playing music rather than figuring out how to play music.I know full well the consequences of this approach: weaker reading in the short term, which is more than compensated for by correct (and more advanced) technique and ability to play more, and more interesting, music. The approach I have chosen restores playing music on the piano as the primary focus of the piano student/teacher relationship. Learning to read music is an important secondary goal, and will, in my experience, stand a better chance of being mastered by students who have played a greater ranger of the compelling music that is available today.(PS I started putting in all the finger numbers and hand positions for elementary students because I couldn't stand hearing and seeing the incorrect technical solutions these wonderful children came up with on their own. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534661). Over the years 1908–16, Debussy had produced a viable scenario for Usher on his third attempt. But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself.In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

It is part of a secular collection, found on a manuscript that was used in Henry's court. The originality of the song has been questioned, with various parts of the song allegedly taken from similar pieces in Europe. The song itself is a courtship conversation in Middle French between a man and woman. Sports et divertissements (Sports and Pastimes) is a cycle of 21 short piano pieces composed in 1914 by Erik Satie.The set consists of a prefatory chorale and 20 musical vignettes depicting various sports and leisure activities. First published in 1923, it has long been considered one of his finest achievements.Musically it represents the peak of Satie's humoristic piano suites (1912-1915), but stands apart from that series in its fusion of several different art forms. Sports originally appeared as a collector's album with illustrations by Charles Martin, accompanied by music, prose poetry and calligraphy. These were my grandfather's favorite hymns. I dedicated this arrangement in his memory. He taught me all of these hymns when I was a young girl, learning to play piano. This makes a nice piece to play as a prelude to a church service.
