This is my third new sonata for unaccompanied French horn. it has three movements as follows: Movement 1: Dance It begins with a crotchet theme which forms the basis of the rest of the movement. The opening should be stately and measured, but not slow. The echoes should be as quiet as possible for each statement of the opening motif. I have made a lot of use of rhythmic features in this movement. After the Maestoso, the 12/8 section is in the nature of a jig, with lots of repeated pitches and very rhythmical There's much use of syncopation. After I have played around with these ideas (intervals based on the opening) there is a more legato tune, also based on the opening music, but in a grander style and marked nobilmente. This is almost a processional, and leads to a reprise of the jig motifs in a new mode and with modifications to the rhythm. The second movement of this sonata is a set of 3 variations on an original tune. The melody is quite hymn-like and needs to be played as such. Very legato, with very slight tongue. Variation 1 is an 8th note variation, with a slight increase in tempo to help it to flow. The player will need to pay close attention to the written phrasing so as not to lose the theme. This variation is p throughout. Variation 2 is a triplet/sextuplet variation, again with a slight increase in tempo. This variation has turns, which I have written out in ossias above to be clear how I would like it to be played. Variation 3 is a semiquaver and glissando variation, requiring good tongue technique and clear phrasing. Breathing should be easy as I have made provision for breaths to mark the ends of phrases. Please don't change these! Finally, there is a restatement of the original theme with slight adaptations to bring the movement to a quiet finish. The third and final movement of the sonata is a rondo. The opening music keeps returning throughout the length of the movement. It comprises a stuttering rhythmic phrase with alternating upwards and downwards scales which gradually build up throughout the opening of the movement. Each time the ritornello idea returns it has been altered in some way. Between the ritornelli are slightly less frenetic sections of cantabile melodic ideas which hark back to both the first and second movements as well as referencing the scalic ideas from the third movement. Although the music is fast, it should be playable without resorting to triple tonguing.

He wrote a huge body of choral music, some of it profound and timeless. He also composed brilliant, virtuoso pieces and his motet-like anthem, Sing Joyfully, a polyphonic setting of Psalm 81, written in 1590, is perhaps his best-known one, It is enchanting to listen to and fun to sing. The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille. I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!! Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous! Symphony No. 8 … City of Light (2011) is in five movements. 1. La Seine Presto, Moderato 2. Basilique du Sacré-Coeur Largo 3. Palais Garnier Allegro, Trio 4. Avenue des Champs-Élysées Allegro 5. Musée du Louvre Largo, Moderato This work is dedicated to my wife and muse, Kristin Beckwith. Isaiah 9:2* Humility seeks to draw attention to the Advent portion of the holiday season. This programmatic composition seeks to create an aural picture of the atmosphere both physically and spiritually in the eastern world B. C. and then try and connect it to Christmas traditions today. Students will really enjoyed rehearsing and performing this piece because of it’s programmatic nature, use of a plethora of percussion as well as some unusual uses of and combinations of instruments. Piccolo flute in the low register, soprano saxophone, open tom drums and oboe to create some Middle Eastern ambiance. Then, in order to create ‘the land of the shadow of death’ some unusual techniques call for whispers through instruments, french horns ringing their hands in and out of the bell, flutes playing on the head joints only, attaching a tenor saxophone mouthpiece to a euphonium and a baritone saxophone mouthpiece to a sousaphone. Add some trumpets and trombones playing only on their lead pipes and double reeds buzzing on just the reed and a haunting canvas to build the chaos of a world without salvation is created. Then, with the calming of the piano to present an extremely stark and hallow arrangement of the 7th century antiphon Veni Immanuel, ‘O Come, O Come Immanuel’ which crescendos to the coming of the savior at measure 128 precipitates the a highly antiphonal arrangement of ‘Joy to World.’ While this piece has some characteristics of ‘novelty band music’ there are plenty of technical demands that must be met in order to make it a legitimate concert band literature selection. *THE HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®. However, this short setting of anonymous C15th words (as with many of my pieces) is intended to support the text, rather than be a nice tune with words shoehorned in. What turns out to be a flowing opening line for the Sopranos (/ solo) leads into a simple refrain. Altos join for the second verse, still in unison, with a slightly elaborated 2-part refrain including duplets against 3/4. So on with the Tenors added in verse three and the Basses in verse four. By verse five, some harmony is forthcoming, as is a brief division for the Sops. Although the nominal key rests in C minor and the refrains so far have resolved on a G major chord, the final chorus ends on a triumphant 8-part C major chord.A definite showpiece for an (at least) reasonably competent choir.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158388). My wife’s from-scratch cinnamon rolls are famous throughout our community—especially among our children’s circle of friends. While enjoying a socially-distanced church service at home on Easter Sunday, there was a batch of those butterfly-inducing cinnamon rolls baking in the new oven. They filled the home with an exquisite aromatic delight. Then the magic motif chimed: “The food is done!†I happened to have my composition notebook with me, and the little four-note tune inspired this composition. It just naturally took me in some happy musical directions, and within a minute or two, the melodic content, replete with fun-filled, muted second-trumpet echoes, was scrawled down. The next day, the music was entered into the computer. It is interesting that I gave the horn the cliché off-beats that all hornists know and love so well. Funny, I usually pride myself on writing for horn as an equal musical instrument; however, this fun, happy melody just demanded an “um-pah†accompaniment. Hopefully there is enough variety to keep the part fun to play. It helps that the piece is only two minutes and something long. The transition into the B section almost wrote itself, modulating to the relative minor. There I paused briefly, wondering how to treat a minor section in such an exuberant piece. Oh, but inspiration continued to flow, and I resumed writing in earnest with a mischievous smile! This section beautifully portrays a naughty, sneaky kid tiptoeing into the kitchen for another cinnamon roll—forbidden until after dinner! The listener can hear the kid’s nervous fluttering heart, and moments of pulling his hand back in startled impishness, and even shuddering as he looks fearfully over his shoulder. At the end of the B section, he gets caught! Witnessing that low-hanging head and puppy dog eyes, mommy finds that she can’t scold the lad too severely. “After dinner, little one…†she reprimands with an understanding grin. The jubilant melody returns to round out the work’s ternary ABA form, though this time with a very sticky Ives-esque climax, reminiscent of a gooey cinnamon roll mess. Too enjoyable to be bothered by prospects of cleaning up, the music shrugs it off with flippant ragtime syncopations, and ends with the “hic-burp†of a very satisfied tummy.
