Published by Victor Rebullida (A0.1021521). --------------Divertimento was born from the proposal that at the end of 2007 makes me the TerpsÃcore Guitar Quartet, from Huesca (Spain) to compose a work for this group.The title comes from the very conception of the work: a series of short pieces as a free-form suite. In this work musicality is present in the foreground from beginning to end, overlaying itself in the presence of the important technique required of performers. In Divertimento the wide expressive range of the guitar is exploited, in this case amplified by the generous acoustic possibilities that the quartet makes available to the composer.The six movements that consist begin with Toccata, which recalls the baroque namesake pieces with their fast scales that run over until they reach a strum climax. It is followed by Serenata, a piece of great expressiveness as a song. Behind it, Intermezzo takes place in a context of Impressionist sonorities. Scherzo-vals, as the name suggests, is a waltz written in a humorous tone that precedes Night, in which the insistent harmonic chords create a dreamlike and somewhat disturbing atmosphere. The fast-paced final Dance evokes with its irregular rhythm the folklore of other lands.It is dedicated to TerpsÃcore Quartet.----------------------Divertimento nace de la propuesta que a finales del año 2007 me hace el Cuarteto de guitarras TerpsÃcore, de Huesca (España) para componer una obra para este grupo. El tÃtulo viene de la propia concepción de la obra: una serie de piezas breves a modo de suite con forma libre. En esta obra la musicalidad está presente en primer plano de principio a fin sobreponiéndose en presencia a la importante técnica exigida a los intérprete. En Divertimento se explota la amplia gama expresiva de la guitarra, en este caso amplificada por las generosas posibilidades acústicas que el cuarteto pone a disposición del compositor. Los seis movimiento de que consta comienzan con Toccata, que rememora las piezas homónimas barrocas con sus veloces escalas que se van atropellando hasta alcanzar un clÃmax rasgueado. Le sigue Serenata, pieza de una gran expresividad a modo de canción. Tras ésta, Intermezzo se desarrolla en un contexto de sonoridades impresionistas. Scherzo-vals, como su nombre indica, es un vals escrito en tono humorÃstico que precede a Nocturno, en el que los insistentes acordes en armónicos crean una atmósfera onÃrica y un tanto inquietante. La trepidante Danza final evoca con su ritmo irregular el folclore de otras tierras. Está dedicada al Cuarteto TerpsÃcore.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q771527). After an early mini piece for this instrumentation, Bunte Blätter (Coloured Leaves) is my first real piece for two pianos. It has become a collection of highly diverse and multifaceted pieces and forms, ranging from Walzer (Waltz) to Danse macabre, from Fanfare to Zirkusparade (Circus Parade). The fact that the interpreters of the world premiere, Arthur and Lucas Jussen, are siblings, may and should be felt in the teasingly affectionate Fangspiel (Game of Tag) in which the two pianists sometimes deliberately play past each other. The collection is completed by Rätsel (Riddle) for Peter Sloterdijk's 75th birthday, a small, sphinx-like piece for the librettist of my Babylon opera. - Jörg Widmann.

The words tell us, in a poetic and metaphysical manner, about the mechanism that moves the world and keeps the universe alive: there is a singing fountain at the end of the world and a pounding heart at the other end. The fountain and the heart are attracted to each other and wish to get closer, but as soon as they move from their place they lose sight of each other. Once they cannot see each other anymore the heart would stop beating and the fountain would stop singing. Thus, they both stay in their places and sing to each other. Their song spreads over the entire world and sparks of light emanate from it. When the sparks are woven together they produce enough Time for a new day to be created. Http://www.HenryMollicone.com Derri-air, a ragtime song for baritone and piano, was written during the production of the new feature-length documentary film, THE FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR- The Poem, the Place, the opera. The Face on the Barroom Floor refers to the famous picture painted on the floor of the Teller House Bar in Central City, Colorado (inspired by the poem by D’Arcy), and the opera I composed to John S. Bowman’s libretto in 1978, which was performed every season in Central City for 33 years, and continues to be my most performed opera. Film producer Lawrence Kraman found on the internet a poem which tells a similar story of another woman whose backside (clothed in a can can dress) was painted on the ceiling in a bar a few blocks away. Alas, the bar (and the lady on the ceiling) are no longer there, but for those who know the face poem, Bottoms up- or the end of the slip of a miss, the poem by Colorado’s Sid Squibb, published in 1951, is truly funny- a kind of parody of the Face poem, detailing in this case how the painting got to be done on the ceiling! -Henry Mollicone May, 2013 More information: http://henrymollicone.com/catalog/songlist/derri-air-2012/.

This jazz arrangement is a new twist on a classic, prompted by a kid in one of my ensembles saying, why don't you do a jazz version of Finlandia - so I did. The tune comes out well, with the same sense of pride mixed with poignancy. It's suitable for intermediate players and above. I can do bespoke arrangements for other combinations on request. This is a dramatic and highly effective vocal work for one soprano with piano accompaniment. It can be staged with a single prop of a small armchair, or performed as a stand-alone song cycle. It tells the story of a Woman and the Great Love in her life. This Love is called off to war, and she is so sensitive that she knows when the conflict has taken her Partner from her forever. She then has to deal with her loss and come to a point of release. The entire libretto is constructed from the poetry of the 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson. The music is modern yet melodically and harmonically accessible to audiences and performers alike. It is very powerful and communicates a great depth of feeling.
