Vignettes is a set of 5 short (2 or 3-page) late-intermediate piano pieces that introduce unique aspects of Maurice Ravel's piano writing that students tend to find challenging. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes1. Réminiscences d’EspagneThis work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2. Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3. Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4. Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. À la manière d'une PavaneÀ la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. It combines Baroque-reminiscent polyphony with the clarity and delicacy of articulation required more widely in the Ravel repertoire.

This piece originally began with the idea of the repeated chords in the right hand which I came up with near the end of 2018. I stumbled across this chord progression and developed it into the first eight bars of the composition. I liked the sound of the main section so I decided to use a Rondo form which is structured as ABACA with section A as the repeated chords in the right hand.It was a lot of fun to write this piece and I learnt many new things whilst writing, especially creating a good structure and developing the A section when it returns throughout the piece. The middle, near to the end section with the Alberti bass gives it a nice break between all of the heavy repeated notes. That's one thing I would have done differently in this piece; separate it a little bit more from the heavy repeated chords.The context and idea behind this piece is a bit more abstract than my other pieces as I usually aim to have a story behind my music but it was born out of a musical idea rather than a philosophical one. However, it seems to convey a frantic mood as well as some times for rest and slowing down.There are some sections that I personally think are still a bit basic, which I think with more experience I will be able to write better. I would have to say the start of the second page, or the ascending chords part sounds quite nice. Overall, I'm fairly happy with the end result, and I have another piece to fully release in the near future. I plan on narrowing down certain parameters to further develop my composition techniques and skills.

This is the original version of the beloved 15 2-Part Inventions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Inventions is a collection of short pieces Bach wrote for the musical education of his young pupils. These are among the finest examples of artistic gems ever written for this purpose, and probably because of this, they became very popular among Bach's pupils and others ever since they were written. The work comprises fifteen two-part, each named 'inventio', and fifteen three-part pieces, named 'sinfonia'. These two groups of pieces are arranged in an identical fashion-in ascending order by key-so that there is little doubt that Bach's intention was to bring them together as a single work. This is also confirmed by the way they are carefully written in his autograph fair copy penned in 1723. On every facing page of an open volume each piece demonstrates the contrapuntal technique, while, at the same time, explores a wide range of musical expressions using various styles and developing the motives in a logical fashion. This is the first piece that I've composed where I wanted to experiment a bit more in. I came up with the motif near the end of 2018, and I basically expanded upon it from there. I quite like the sound of the main section, and I tried to sort of incorporate it in the other sections of the piece. The middle, near to the end section with the Alberti bass gives it a nice break between all of the heavy repeated notes. That's one thing I would have done differently in this piece; separate it a little bit more from the heavy repeated chords.There are some sections that I personally think are still a bit basic, which I with more experience will become better. I would have to say the start of the second page, or the ascending chords part sounds quite nice. Overall, I'm fairly happy with the end result, and I have another piece to fully release in the near future. I plan on narrowing down certain parameters to further develop my composition techniques and skills.

This is my third Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. The Prelude is designed as a little showmanship piece as it should only be played with the right hand. Unlike most of my Preludes which are entirely original works, this one has an echo of J.S. Bach running through it. This Prelude is not too challenging for young pianists and only requires a sense of rhythm and strength in the right hand. This piece would be suitable for any beginner pianist with some skill and is roughly 1 1/2 minutes in performance.

Although called a trio sonata, it does not follow the typical format of a Baroque trio sonata. Each of the three movements are quite short – think of it as a trio sonata in miniature. Together, all three movements take less than five minutes to perform. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd parts are included for both E flat and B flat instruments. The parts may be combined as desired. The short length and moderate range of the piece make this a good choice for intermediate players. Movement 1, Allegro in C major, is in common time. He spent most of his life in Boston, working at various times as a tanner or as minor civic official, and occasionally as a church musician. Billings seems to have had little formal music training, but when he was just 22, he also set himself up as an itinerant singing-master, teaching “singing-schools,†where children and adults could learn the rudiments of musical notation and solfege. To feed the market he and other singing-masters had helped to create, Billings published six collections of music, mostly for SATB voices, The first of these, The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) featured a frontispiece engraved by his friend Paul Revere. Billings was fairly prosperous by 1780s, but his good fortune faded in the 1790s. His final collection of music, The Continental Harmony of 1794, was published for his benefit by a group of Boston friends. Billings died destitute in 1800. Billings composed some 340 pieces, mostly collected in his printed editions. This music has a rough-edged and sturdy beauty that is distinctly different from anything in contemporary Europe. The vast majority of Billings’s works were hymns or “psalm tunes.†He was particularly attracted to the great English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748), though Billings himself wrote verses for many of his hymns. One of the most famous Billings “psalm tunes,†Chester is not a Christian hymn, but rather a patriotic song of defiance directed against the British. Billings spent nearly all of the Revolutionary War in Boston and made no secret of his patriot sentiments. Chester was first published in 1770, but when he republished it in his The Singing-Master’s Assistant during the height of the war in 1778, Billings added a verse calling out the “infernal league†of the leading British generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis. Many brass-players will know Chester from the finale of William Schuman’s 1957 band piece A New England Triptych. Billings also composed over 50 “fuging-tunesâ€â€”a genre that usually included a short introduction and a repeated contrapuntal section. (These fuging sections usually begin with imitation, but they are otherwise not at all like classical fugues written in Europe at the time.) The fuging-tune Creation is one of his later works, published in The Continental Harmony of 1794, and experiments with the form. It sets two verses of the Watts hymn “When I With Pleasing Wonder Stand†though final line of verse 1 is repeated in a striking phrase that suddenly moves twice as fast (m.15). The fuging section begins in m.30, and rather than the usual exact repeat, Billing writes an entirely new and more elaborate second section beginning at m.44. Billings first published the simple but beautiful Africa in 1770, and published a revised version in 1778; the later version appearing with the Isaac Watts hymn “Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise.†I first arranged Africa in 1995, for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and I edited it for this publication. Phrasing and articulations marked here reflect the original vocal texts. Africa has long been a favorite of the Glenwood group. Chester and Creation were arranged in 2022. Mike Allsen February 2022.
