I was in a really good mood and I started playing some Floyd Cramer licks over a left hand ostinato bass line. It came together very easily and in a very short period of time. I have always admired the Nashville sound that Floyd Cramer helped to create with his slip note piano style. River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. In GRAVITY I explored different gravities as forces we not only feel them in every moments of our lives, but also thinking of living without or escaping from them seems impossible. Likewise, those gravities exist in the music, make us feel the music continuous, desirable, logical and an integrated language of art. The exploration of the path from chaos to unity, and from unity to multiplicity, is where the title came from. GRAVITY consists of two main sections. The first section, which shows the fully-grown and flourished musical ecosystem, and the second part; a flashback to just after big-bang, which tries to musicalize the creation of the gravity! In the first section, I’ve used the concept of horizontal and vertical minimalism. At the very beginning of the piece we have a structure that bring the idea of the vertical minimalism out. In every moment, each instrument plays the same note as others. However, the narrative line is divided into different octaves, so, the melody is not the same in spite of the fact that each instrument plays the same tone. This structure also reminds the paradoxical ladder or optical staircase illusion. The narration is built up until it reaches temporal climax. At the same time, this melody starts again from the beginning with some microscopic differences visible vividly to musicians. This semi reciprocating musical narration, could be observed as a musical example of the staircase illusion. After this part, but still in the first section of the music, I’ve used the horizontal (traditional) minimalism idioms to explore the bounding forces present in the music. Although, what interesting here is the creation of synthetic voices which is the result of different amounts of the nuances and different combinations of the sound. For keen ears, it seems like shades of neon lights, penetrate into one another in the scale of time and create a big picture of micro fluctuating objects. In the second section or just after big-bang, I’ve observed and recreate musically, the very moment of creation of the gravity just after the big-bang. Here, we don’t have melody, rhythm, structure, narration and other aspects of the music in the traditional way, although all of them are present in the music. very single sound or noise is meaningful and showing the assemblage process of the forces in the music to create a melody line. I’ve occupied idioms of contemporary Sonorism genre to create the atmosphere. This highly complex texture shows the virtuosity of interpreters and the capability of the instruments in avant-garde literature and extended techniques. The music is concluded by a fast-tempo finale, with the instruction of fortissimo possiblile (as loud as possible). The piece, in fact, will not be finished as a morendo, but, it opens a space for hypothetically living structure; constantly grows, flourishes, shines and decays.

It starts with the trumpets at the end of the world, the sense of quiet expectation. Wind across a field. It drops off into the silence of outer space. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...

I am a keen road and hill runner, and I often find solitude, fitness, and mental rejuvenation in the foothills of the Ochils. Perthshire is a beautiful place to run. Due to the lack of planes and cars, I was amazed at the sudden abundance of animals and plant growth which appeared quite suddenly during that spring and summer. I felt that nature was thanking us for a brief pause in our frantic lifestyles, where we belch emissions and pollute our souls, minds and the planet in a frantic rush to feed our lust for materialism. I feel that many people (myself included) were able to stop, reflect and re-evaluate our roles in our lives. This work is part of a cycle of five short pieces for a single instrument and piano, focused on the five ages in the cosmogony of Ancient Mexican civilisation. The peoples of the Mexican highlands believe that time follows specific cycles and that the world was created following the pattern of 'trial and error'. The creation of the world is divided into several periods which are termed 'suns' (we are currently living in the fifth phase named 'Ollin'). Each period will be brought to an end through a natural catastrophe. Solei-Feu refers to the first attempt to create a world out of a rain of fire (nahui quiahuitl).The element of fire is reflected in the musical soundscape of this work, constructed from rampant, rhythmic motifs, fragmented splinters, spinning upswings and impacts reverberating through space. An intimate dialogue develops between violin and piano on the basis of extremely simple figures. Interconnecting lines and dense musical material are thrown against each other in a play of contrasting registers and blended tonal colouring, creating a mysterious and disturbing mythological universe coloured by its ontological pessimism. ABOUT THIS WORK:In 2016, the Russian Space Corporation announced its newest long-term project: a plan to establish a permanent human colony on the Moon by the year 2030. Several other nations - including Japan, China and the USA - have announced similar projects over the years. I began to think about this idea and its possible implications for human culture. An intriguing question came to mind: if a human settlement on the Moon is developed, would art works be created there? Would there be composers there, writing music?After enough time had passed, what would the music made by inhabitants of such remote colonies sound like?I started to imagine a music that combined well-known elements of the Western tradition with new patterns and concepts, these being an expression of the profoundly different daily-life experiences of living on the Moon. I heard, in my mind, a lonesome chant, performed with a view of a lunar night sky. After the song, a strange pulsating music, maybe a subtle depiction of a process of lunar tectonics. Connecting between these two elements, a third one emerged: a mysterious, oscillating motive, perpetually shifting back and forth between two harmonies; swaying, gently and forever, until lost to a cosmic silence…From these resonant impressions, a primitive sketch started to emerge; a voyage into an unexplored compositional region. A musical fantasy about a distant - yet still human - reality.

PLANET ORIGAMI : Is my latest play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of family orientated musicals and takes the audience ‘Out of this World’ to a strange little planet in a far distant galaxy on a small barren rocky planet called BEEZEDON. This is a place entirely inhabited by a race of androids, who after some catastrophic event, were the only machines immune from the ensuing radiation which destroyed every living life form and fauna. Before leaving for a safer haven, the emigrating intelligencia built a new colony of these ‘droids and programmed them to make their planet beautiful again by carpeting it with new flowers, when it was deemed ‘safe.’ The droids had carried out this programme diligently for the next thousand years. However no one had thought through the consequence of instigating such a rigid programme and when their preliminary attempts ended in failure and the fauna died,these clever machines found a perfect solution by refering to their data banks and manufacturing replicas from synthesised plastic. Once the programme was completed and with no more space left, the ‘droids instantly ‘restored' themselves and began creating their world all over again. This is where my story begins:- ‘Melody Mayflower’, Is a newly appointed Earth’s Ambassador and a representative of the Commission for Harmony and Concilliation, an organisation which has been extending its borders throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Our own star system has become a recent member and Melody is one of their many Goodwill Ambassadors. Although she doesn’t know it, she has been selected for the onerous task of convincing the Droid Nation that their programme is now obselete, as Beezedon is now free of contamination, therefore ready for re-planting with organic material.

Near to our family home is an abandoned water mill called Dron Mill. All that remains today is the shell of a building, spaces where wheels and axles once stood, and a babbling burn which has been reclaimed by nature. In centuries past, this would have been a place of activity and prosperity. I imagined a miller living in this idyllic corner, concealed by the hillside. Maybe he and his wife danced in the garden. The Miller’s Waltz reflects the indescribable magic which some places possess. A poet in the 19th century also felt this magic when he/she wrote anonymously: At the fit o’ Balmanno, a whin-covered hill, Nestlin’ mang trees, there you’ll find the auld mill; If wi’ peace and contentment your mind you wad fill, Gae up to Dron Mill by the Ochils.
