Published by Dandelion Music Press (A0.891206). This tender lullaby is a touching memorial for an end of life commemoration of a parent or caregiver. Here is a great opportunity to collaborate with a children's or youth choir and Irish instrumentalists, or to freely substitute any treble solo and Western instrumental equivalent.Included in Project:Encore 2017, Quarter 1 Lost Songs of Ancient Ireland, for Mixed Choir with Treble Descant, Piano or Harp, Bodhran, Irish Flute, and Violin, is a three-movement song cycle that focuses on the shifting relationships over the scope of a lifetime from the differing perspective of each person involved.I. Old Beggarman- Two interwoven jigs, It Was an Old Beggarman, Weary and Wet and Ag an mBóithrÃn Buà (At the Yellow Little Road), of both a young lady's observation of a wandering beggarman and his unrequited, possibly unexpressed, love for her. They are offered together as alternate perspectives from potential romantic partners, and features lilting, mouth music, or portaireacht bhéil (port a'bhéil, mouth-singing) as it is known in Irish Gaelic.II. I Would Rock My Child to Sleep- A sentimental Irish lullaby Irish lullaby Do Chuirfinnse Féin Mo Leanbh a Chodladh (I Would Put My Own Child to Sleep) highlights the shifting roles of a caregiver: the parent full of hopes of the parent for the child morphing over a lifetime into a blessing from the grown child to the aged parent. Each verse is progressively based upon an overall narrative: 1. hopes of the parent for the child 2. an easy, natural rhythm to family life, possibly the child is older now, and there is a dream of family continuance 3. uncertainty over who is nurturing who: does the child now sing to comfort the parent? 4. a closing blessing for peace and rest that hearkens back to the successful sleep of a tired infantIII. The Drummer- An energetic reel, a combination of Maidin Fhómhair, nó CailÃn Péacach (The Harvest Maiden, or Sprouting Maiden) and Cormac Spáinneach, nó An Drumadóir (Cormac Spaineach, or The Drummer), alternating between romantic partners encased by a nostalgic love song, suggesting the passing of a lifetime.Commissioned by Cora Voce; Tacoma, WAMovements available for purchase separately.2017 Choral Contest EntryLaurie Betts Hughes, ASCAP | www.LaurieBettsHughes.com

Sara Garrard #6097335. Published by Sara Garrard (A0.819480). Arrangement of the traditional Scottish folk song. Suitable for full choir or a quintet / small a capella ensemble, this is a challenging arrangement that will reward with rich harmonies and interweaving lines.Rehearsal recording.A possible story being told through these lyrics (of which many variants exist) is of a soldier's farewell - taken prisoner and sentenced to be executed, he will take the low road home through death - to a friend or lover with whom he shared an idyllic lost youth. The verses tell of the beauty of the landscape of their childhood home and how nature keeps going, spring coming again each year, regardless of their trials and sadness. The world does na ken how we're greetin': The world does not know how we're grieving

String Ensemble - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1101781 Composed by Susan Brown. Chamber,Classical,Traditional. 48 pages. Susan Brown #705164. Published by Susan Brown (A0.1101781). 3 pieces for strings - a reflection of an unexpectedly fast changing world as witnessed since the beginning of this decade. Can be played as separate movements or flowing into each other. Passing opens with shock, disbelief and realisation that change has begun, followed by questioning why, and anger at at the loss of what was once a world understood to a feeling of being left behind. A feeling of the passing of time and lost youth gives way to self-pity and sadness. Anger follows, then resistance, then reflection on the speed of such change. Ultimately resignation. Looking back through the rose-tinted glasses of Reminiscing brings forth varied memories of times past and what hindsight deems to be 'those halcyon days'. Apprehensively Emerging into the new territory of change. Initially accepting the opportunities of it, then cautious and worried about the unknown to finally the knowledge that change will happen anyway - so just get on with it!

ABOUT THE PIECEThis is a piano arrangement of the beautiful Irish ballad It was down by the Sally Gardens with lyrics by the famous poet William Butler Yeats. The song speaks about broken love and lost youth. My piano arrangement uses simple popular harmonies to let enough room to the beautiful Irish tune. The piece is rather easy to play (level 2-3), but develops a nice sound, and is really fun to learn and perform! If you want to contact me, send me an email to jf.jelend(AT)web.de

Choral Choir - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1262540 Composed by Matthew Nunes. A Cappella,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 60 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #855564. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1262540). Listen to this piece here     During the spring of 2014 four of Jupiter’s moons captured my imagination with their distinctive features as well as the powerful myths associated with each name. For Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io the musical ideas I would use for each became clearer the more I researched. I chose a mixed choir to convey these ideas as the human voice can convey the awe and unknown of space more convincingly than most instruments. Each movement is intended as a vignette evoking what impacted me the most about each moon: I. Europa     Able to drive Jupiter wild with her beauty, Europa was stolen away by the god and proved bountiful to her captor. The moon may have the potential to support life and is now a primary target of our scientific efforts. This movement celebrates this vitality with driving rhythms supporting a soothing melodic line. II. Ganymede      This movement is a lament for the youth and beauty that once had male and female lovers pining for Ganymede. The moon that shares his name, however, has lost its youth and has been declared geologically dead. Written for the males of the chorus this movement features stacking triads and evokes our past where the highest and most beautiful male voices were adored.  III. Callisto      Nearly killed by her own son after Hera (Jupiter’s wife) spitefully transformed her into a bear, Callisto was a beautiful nymph who Jupiter set amongst the stars as Ursa Major. The moon itself has had its share of harm: in the heavy bombardment period it was impacted multiple times by large objects, the many craters of which are visible. I wrote this movement as if it were a reassuring lullaby and is to be performed by the female voices. A solo oboe* carries the melody over thick chords and is later intertwined with the choir.         - *While oboe is the original intent for this movement a flute or violin would make for an acceptable substitution. IV. Io     Io is a woman who suffered greatly under Jupiter’s lust and the bitterness of Hera’s jealousy. This moon represents the frustrations of suffering with its hundreds of active volcanoes and undying rumblings beneath the surface. Because of this it is one of the most tumultuous objects in our galaxy.  The choir churns forth with motives based off of diminished chords until the pressure built up can no longer be contained – eruption is imminent.- Matthew NunesWindsor, August 2014.

David Warin Solomons #431373. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576771). Setting of my father's translation of Ronsard's poem A Cassandre for speaking voice and bassoon In the sound sample the poem is spoken by my father S N Solomons The bassoon part is based on the song To Cassandra for alto and guitar, which is also available on this site [English translation by SN Solomons] Darling, come see the rose so red, Which this morn timidly had spread Her mantle to the eye of day. Come see if she has lost this e'en Her crimson pleated robe's soft sheen, That same blush which on your cheek plays. See how in but a paltry hour She has let fall her ailing flower. Her beauty lies there in the dust! Alas! How cruel is Mother Nature, Since such a blossom can endure Only from trembling dawn to dusk. Darling you must indeed believe, Whilst innocence within you cleaves The bud and blooms in purity, Garner the gifts of tender youth, For, like this flower, age in sooth Will sadly spoil and tarnish beauty.

Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837499). Letters From Cohoes was originally conceived for Baritone, flute, harp and string Quartet. The first movement is set in Eva Tanguay’s voice and works well dramatically for mezzo-soprano. Eva Tanguay (1879-1947) was born in Canada and billed herself as the girl who made vaudeville famous. She was known for her suggestive songs and extravagant costumes. She has been likened to Madonna or Lady Gaga. Her one recording was I Don’t Care in 1922. Her parents moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts in the 1880’s and she began her career as a teenager at the Cohoes Music Hall. At the age of nineteen she made her debut in New York City. Tanguay was the highest paid woman of her day but was said to have lost more than two million dollars in the Wall Street crash of 1929. Tanguay had a reputation for outlandish behavior and was once fined $50 in Louisville, Kentucky for throwing a stagehand down a flight of stairs. She died, blind and nearly destitute, at the age of 68 in Hollywood. In 1953 Mitzi Gaynor portrayed Eva Tanguay in a fictionalized version of her life in the motion picture, The I Don’t Care Girl. Her ghost is said to still haunt Cohoes Music Hall in upstate New York. Letters from Cohoes is a highly fictionalized, musical portrayal of Eva Tanguay’s ghost. In its original form it was scored for flute (doubling on alto flute, contrabass flute and piccolo), harp, string quartet and solo baritone. It is in four movements, taking the form of letters. Letter 4. October 1974, Cohoes (duration – 4:56) Confrontation and Finale The stage manager finally confronts the ghost residing in the hall. Your innocence was stolen but your youth was yours to lose. The croaking raven doth bellow for revenge,And so I stand for sacrifice.

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576770). Setting of Ronsard's poem A Cassandre for speaking voice and bassoon In the sound sample the poem is spoken in modern French by my father S N Solomons who also created an English version as shown below The bassoon part is based on the song To Cassandra for alto and guitar, using my father's translation, which is also available on this site Mignonne, allons voir si la rose Qui ce matin avoit desclose Sa robe de pourpre au Soleil, A point perdu ceste vesprée Les plis de sa robe pourprée, Et son teint au vostre pareil. [English translation by SN Solomons] Darling, come see the rose so red, Which this morn timidly had spread Her mantle to the eye of day. Darling you must indeed believe, Whilst innocence within you cleaves The bud and blooms in purity, Garner the gifts of tender youth, For, like this flower, age in sooth Will sadly spoil and tarnish beauty.].

Tenor Voice,Vocal Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533282 Composed by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs. Contemporary,Holiday,Love. 21 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2331251. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533282). Whitman only published one book – Leaves of Grass – but it was always a work in progress. He added poems and revised others for each succeeding edition. Thus, the first edition (1819) was a small book with only 12 poems and the last, often refered to as the Deathbed Edition (1892), contained over 400. Some of these he wrote in “clusters†of related poems. Such is the case with the Calamus cluster. The title was chosen to alert the reader that these were poems about what he called “the love of comrades,†“manly love†or with the code word, “adhesiveness.†The concept of homosexuality, as we know it today, was very different in Whitman’s time, but violently socially taboo. Acorus calamus is a reed-like species of marsh grass. In Poetry and Prose, Whitman wrote that it s a … very large and aromatic grass, or root, spears three feet high—often called 'sweet flag'—grows all over the Northern and Middle States.†The phallic plant has always been a symbol of love and associated with the Greek myth of Kalamos, son of the river god who loved the youth Karpos. When Karpos died in a swimming accident, Kalamos transformed himself into a reed so he could always be near the spot where his beloved died, and the rustling of the reeds in the winds sounds like moans of mourning. The Calamus cluster, 39 poems in all, recount the story of a manly love found and lost from the perspective of some time later. They are bittersweet memories. I chose four poems for my own cluster. They represent the four stages of such a relationship: initial attraction, first coy interactions, full-blossomed love, and the bitterness of it’s ending. It is possible that these events actually happened or that they all occurred in the poets mind without ever revealing his thoughts to the intended. Some musical devices, such as the rustling of the leaves in the third song and the constant use of seconds as two people who are close but not yet together in the second one, are obvious. But, other than some indications of tempo, I hesitate to give out remarks about how to perform the songs, or even metronome markings, that might give the singer a preconceived notion. This situation has happened to everyone. So, I say to the singer: revive the memories of a similar event in your life: a particularly heartbreaking one is best. Bring the telling of that memory to the vivid present, and tell us that story as if it ending some time ago but the hurt remains strong, If, by some chance, the singer has not had this experience, he should wait to sing this cycle until he has. An Acre of Grass, written during Yeats' later years while he ponders his youth, yet he concludes that even though he ishas lost much as he ages, he has an old man's eagle mind. This five-minute work is scored for bass-baritone (also mezzo-soprano), piano, and cello. It is often performed by Yeats' The Second Coming, a work that is eerily prescient of the turmoil of the early decade(s) of the 21st Century. .
