Die Lotosblume (which means The Lotus-Flowerâ€) is No. 7 of Robert Schumann’s song cycle Myrthen, which was a wedding present to his wife Clara Wieck. Schumann completed the cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Ludwig Rellstab, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Die Lotosblume†is a poem by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) the text of which, given the circumstances of Robert’s & Clara’s romance, is thought to have a double meaning: the lotus-flower represents Clara, the moon Robert, and the sun Clara’s father, who disapproved of their relationship. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part in support of a 4-part (SATB) harmonization of the melody. Although the lower voices are informed by the harmonies of the accompaniment and move largely in parallel motion, each voice retains its own counter-melodic value. The arrangement was premiered in 2014 by the Morris County (NJ) Honor Choir under the direction of the arranger, D. Jason Bishop.

Tug-O-War Easy Trumpet Duet By Eddie Lewis Introduce your students to the art of syncopation with this easy but fun trumpet duet. While it is not necessarily a performance piece, the song in this duet is fun for the students. The inspiration to write this duet comes from the image at the top of the page. This is an image Eddie’s wife found on Gutenberg.org. She commented how a lot of the old piano sheet music used to have clever drawings. That’s when Eddie had the idea to do a trumpet duet in much of the same style as those classic piano books. The range on Tug-O-War is only up to A in the staff. The only aspect of the trumpet duet that is not easy enough for beginners is the syncopation. That’s how Eddie likes to teach. Introduce the difficult aspects in a musical environment that understates all the other aspects. That way there is no need to really concentrate on more than one thing at once. We recommend you first practice this easy trumpet duet with counting and clapping first. Make sure the rhythms are correct, then from that solid foundation, add the trumpet and the notes. Tug-O-War is an educational trumpet duet and is part of Eddie Lewis’ complete method. This rhythmic focused duet is in our Trumpet Tyro skill level. What make is Trumpet Tyro is the eighth notes. In Eddie’s system, Trumpet Pioneer students (absolute beginners) have not been taught eighth notes yet. Farrés was born in 1903 in the small city of Quemado de Güines, Las Villas, Cuba. Although unable to read or write music, he became a prolific and world-renowned composer. His songs include Quizás, Quizás, Quizás, Acércate Más, Tres Palabras, Toda Una Vida and his own favorite Madrecita written in honor of his mother and sung to this day in Latin America on Mother's Day. His songs have been performed and recorded by stars such as Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, Eydie Gorme, Pedro Vargas, Raquel Bitton, Charles Aznavour, Luis Miguel, Maurice Chevalier, Sara Montiel, Olga Guillot, John Serry Sr., Cake[1][2] and many others. Charlie Haden included Tres Palabras on his Grammy-winning 2001 album Nocturne. In 1962, Farrés and his wife, Fina del Peso Farrés, left Cuba. They never returned. He died in West New York, New Jersey, in 1985.

Note from the arranger: One of the things that I’ve always loved about this song is how it sort of modernizes the language of the life of Jesus as its portrayed in the Bible. There’s nothing about supernatural angels of the Lord who frighten shepherds abiding in the field and, instead, it begins with the story of a husband and wife grappling with the birth of a child; the Last Supper sounds like a gathering of friends at a going-away party. The Jesus in this song is a very human one and, having sung a lot of sacred repertoire over the years, that’s a side of him I don’t feel like we talk about very much. The original song features a lot of speak singing over a gentle guitar riff, and I’ve attempted to preserve a bit of that feel with the piano.

Tropical Dance 2 by Justin Elie (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ Justin Elie 1883-1931 was one of the few Haitian composers whose works were published outside Haiti and enjoyed an international reputation for his works. He received his early education in Haiti, studying with pianist Ermine Faubert from 1889 to 1894 and enrolling briefly at the prestigious institution de Saint Louis de Gonzague in Port-au-Prince. ♫ In 1895, at the age of 12 he traveled to France and enrolled at the Cours Masset, a preparatory school for the Paris Conservatory. In 1901 at the age of 17 he entered the Paris Conservatoire. Elie returned to Haiti in 1905. ♫ He undertook a concert tour in 1909 and 1910, featuring works by European composers, and visited Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Curaçao, Venezuela, and Cuba. Elie's concerts were especially well received in Jamaica. Justin Elie enjoyed the most prominent international reputation of all the Haitian composers. ♫ Justin Elie drew on Native American music for his creative inspiration. Elie wrote several pieces that used Native American (Haitian, and Central and South American) musical motifs and descriptive programs that put these native cultures at the center of Haitian musical life. Unlike Lamothe, whose audience was primarily drawn from Haiti, Elie developed his career in the United States. ♫ Eager to make a career of music composition, Justin Elie emigrated to the US in 1922 moving to New York City. His wife, Lily, joined him in New York in 1923 and the two of them performed frequently in recitals that included Elie's compositions. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages. These kinds of section repeats were invented to spare the composer’s time and the cost of extra paper and ink. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. My wife uses the word ‘Pootling’ and ‘Pootle’ a lot when we are driving, maybe thats it! The bit from J.S.Bach flute suite in the middle is my most obvious plagiaristic moment ever!

German.When Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel was premiered on 23 December 1893 in Weimar conducted by Richard Strauss, the work could look back on an extensive history of origin.Humperdinck’s younger sister Adelheid Wette (born in 1858) had displayed a great interest in literature in her youth and written a variety of poems for special occasions. In 1888, she wrote a fairy tale entitled Schneewittchen [Snow White] and her brother supplied some songs for this piece. Further fairy tale collaborations followed which were customarily performed within the family circle, and the first draft of the Hänsel und Gretel was begun in 1890. Adelheid’s husband would be celebrating his 34th birthday on 16 May of this year and his wife intended to surprise him with a performance of her version of this fairy tale. Her brother was allotted the task of composing the accompanying songs and, a month before the birthday, she wrote a letter to him in Mainz where Engelbert Humperdinck was among other activities working as an editor for the Schott publishing house, ordering a “very pretty folkloric†Tanzlied [Dance song], a Waldlied [Forest song] (or Echolied [Echo song]), a Schlummerlied [Lullaby] and a Kickericki-Lied [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] from her “dear sugar-sweet little brother... Engel-Bärtchen [angel beard]â€. She enclosed the corresponding verses with the letter and “for fun†also provided her own invented melody for the Schlummerlied and rhythmic suggestions for the Tanzlied. Humperdinck went straight to work and, as related in an entry in his diary, was already able to play the songs to the director of the publishing house, Dr Ludwig Strecker, by 19 April.This was the history of origin of the four songs published for the first time edited in form of their original versions in this edition Brüderchen komm’ tanz’ mit mir, Wer ruft mir im Walde doch alles nach, In den Zweigen die Vögelein und Tirelireli! ‘s ist nicht mehr früh “for two children’s voices and piano accompaniment†(see manuscript1). In his reply letter to his sister in which the fair copy of the songs were enclosed, Humperdinck wrote: “As you see, the pitch of the melodies is not too high and I have incorporated your melodies. Let me know soon whether you like the little songs. By the way, the ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ can also be sung on one note(E flat) instead of on the four notes of the chord.â€The first performance of the song-play was held as planned within the family circle with Wettes’ two eldest daughters in the two principle roles. Spurred on by the success of the family performance, initial plans were forged to adapt the song-play into a singspiel with numerous musical numbers and rhymed dialogues; Hermann Wette participated in a draft of the text. The particell of this singspiel had been completed by Christmas 1890. Hugo Wolf and a few others however advised the composer to extend the singspiel into a through-composed fairy tale opera. Humperdinck followed this advice and worked on what he ironically termed as a “Kinderstubenweihfestspiel“ [sacred festive play for the nursery] during the next two summers in Bayreuth. Tanzliedchen [Dance song] and Morgenweckruf [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] were eventually included in the opera in a modified form.Bevor Engelbert Humperdincks Märchenoper Hänsel und Gretel zum Welterfolg wurde, hatte das Werk bereits eine vielschichtige Entstehungsgeschichte hinter sich. Humperdincks Schwester Adelheid Wette schrieb 1890 ein gereimtes Märchenspiel gleichen Namens, welches sie gemeinsam mit ihren Töchtern im Familienkreis aufführte. Ihr Bruder hatte die entsprechenden vier Lieder dazu beigesteuert.
