Levis exsurgit zephirus is taken from the eleventh century volume titled Cambridge Songs. The music has a gentle undulating quality, as the speaker is “possessed by deep sighs in the midst of all this beauty,†for his soul languishes. After several climaxes, the opening music returns in the minor mode, accompanied by “sighs†in the piano and violoncello. Duration: 5:00D’Anne qui me jetta de la neige describes a young man suddenly hit by what Italians poetically call the “Thunderbolt,†a burning moment where one falls suddenly and passionately in love. It is based on a sonnet by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) entitled I loved you first: but afterwards your love from her Monna Innominata, a series of 14 sonnets. I loved you first: but afterwards your love is one of Rossetti’s love poems; it simply yet profoundly expresses the existence of love as being made possible only through the complete melding of two people as one entity.The Love Which Makes Us One is best suited for advanced intermediate to professional level choirs. Competitive high school and college choirs should be able to manage it. The piece involves continuous two-against-three rhythms with the choir vs. piano. In addition, there is one extended a capella section that requires the choir to stay on pitch for the piano re-entry. My brother died suddenly in 2011 at the age of 42. He left all of us behind including his daughters, my nieces, when they were ages six years and six months. My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters†is my gift to the six young people I care most about. They are an adaptation and translation of a poem originally written in Aramaic by the Jewish Rabbi of Worms, Germany around the year 1050. This poem in turn is similar to a passage in the Qur'an. What an incredible journey for these great words: an ancient poem that has its roots in the Qur'an, later adapted by a Rabbi, written on the wall of an insane asylum by a patient, and finally taken up by a Christian to be the basis of a beautiful song.
